Chess must be one of the oldest games in the world. An Arab traveller in India in the year 900 wrote that it was played “long, long ago”. Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played everywhere from Japan to Europe since 1400. The name“chess”is interesting. When one player is attacking the other's king, he says, in English,“check”. When the king has been caught and cannot move anywhere, he says“check mate”. These words come from Persian (波斯语).“Shah mat”means “the king is dead”. That is when the game is over, and one player has won.
Such an old game changes very slowly. The rules have not always been the same as they are now. For example, at one time the queen could only move one square at a time. Now she is the strongest piece on the board. It would be interesting to know why this has happened! Chess takes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You don't have to be a champion in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by two people sitting at the same table. The first time the Americans beat the Russians was in a match played by radio. Some of the chess masters are able to play many people at the same time. The record was when one man played 400 games! It is said that some people play chess by post. This must make chess the slowest game in the world.

In 1781 twelve families made their way north from Mexico to California. On a stream along the desert's edge, they built a settlement called Los Angeles. For many years it was a market town, where nearby farmers and ranchers met to trade.
Then in 1890 a railroad connected Los Angeles with San Francisco and through San Francisco to the rest of the country. The next year farmers sent their first train of oranges east. By 1885 a new railroad supplied a direct line between Los Angeles and Chicago.

Although Americans spend a great deal of time watching TV and seeing movies, books are still very popular in the USA. Hardcover books commonly sell for $12 to $25, so people buy these most frequently as gifts and choose paperback editions (usually under $10) for their personal use. Most people also have a public library in the neighborhood and can get books on loan for two weeks absolutely free. What books do they read? Good works of literature written by Americans are readily available. Since the 19th century, American writers have moved away from the influence of English writers and have developed a voice of their own. Americans are justly proud of their literary giants, but the most popular readings are how-to-books(how to fix your car, file for your own divorce, and so forth), escape fiction (including murder mysteries and novels about love and adventure), and biographies, Often exposes about famous people. Despite the thousands of books published each year, experts worry that the American people get too much of their knowledge from TV and radio and not enough information from the printed word. Parents, teachers, and librarians are constantly trying to develop in children the habit of reading.
Most areas have at least one local daily newspaper which gives news of the surrounding communities and also provides national and international news. However, since 1950, the number of newspaper published in the United States has declined by almost 25%, while the population has increased by almost 70%. “Creativity(创造性) is the key to a brighter future,”say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.
Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence(智力). The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce. new ideas that are good for something.
Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can't recognize ways to use it in new situation. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.
It is important to give children choice. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.
(1)What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake?
[ ]
A.They encouraged people to work a longer time.
B.They discouraged people to think freely.
C.They asked people to spend all their work time developing new ideas.
D.They encouraged people to spend some of their work time considering and improving new ideas.
(2)Creativity is something ________.
[ ]
A.that people are born with
B.that depends on intelligence
C.that is way of using what one has learned to work out new problems
D.that is not important at all
(3)Why don't schools try to encourage creativity?
[ ]
A.They don't understand the importance of education.
B.They don't want their students to make mistakes.
C.They pay too much attention to exam marks, language and mathematical skills
D.They think it more important to remember some information
(4)Why is it necessary to give children choices at the early age?
[ ]
A.They can choose between two food items.
B.They can learn how to make decision and understand their results.
C.They can do whatever they want.
D.They will get rid of their parents' control.
