For many years, T-shirts were simple short-sleeved undershirts for men and boys. T-shirts used to be of one color——white. And since they were worn under shirts, they were generally not seen.

Smart but comfortable and convenient to wear, they have become one of America's newest ideas on fashion.

Although T-shirts are now available in a wide variety of bright materials and styles, the most popular kind is the traditional cotton T-shirts with a slogan or picture printed on the front. Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence(智力) developed by our environment (环境) and our experience?

Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. Our intelligence is partly given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in an uninteresting environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and changing surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the most closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical(孪生) twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this early suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is tiring and uninteresting. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close connection with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

(1)The writer is in favour of the view that man's intelligence is given to him ________.

[ ]

A.at birth

B.through education

C.both at birth and through education

D.neither at birth nor through education

(2)In the second paragraph,“if we take two unrelated people at random from the population…”means“if we ________”.

[ ]

A.pick up any two persons

B.choose two persons who are relatives

C.take out two different persons

D.choose two persons with different intelligence

(3)The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately show ________.

[ ]

A.the importance of their intelligence

B.the effect of environment on intelligence

C.the importance of their positions

D.the part that birth plays

(4)The best title of this passage can be ________.

[ ]

A.Dependence on Environment

C.Surroundings

D.Effect of Education

Recently, a professor of philosophy(哲学)in the United States has written a book called“Money and the Meaning of Life”. He, has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.

He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the pictures. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made man?

Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don't know much. All I am is rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purpose in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

(1)According to the first paragraph, people have not realized ________.

[ ]

A.how important money is in their day-to-day life

B.how one spends money shows what is important to him

C.that money is more important than their philosophy of life

D.that their understanding of life is more important than money

(2)The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money ________.

[ ]

A.is a good way to test your friendship

B.will do harm to your friendship

C.will strengthen your friendship

D.is a good way to break off your friendship

(3)What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?

[ ]

A.He does not feel that he is well educated

B.He does not think that he is a very important person

C.He does not think that being rich deserves(值得)so much attention

D.He does not consider himself to be very successful

(4)What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?

[ ]

A.Money is an end.

B.Money is a means.

C.Money is everything.

D.Money is unimportant.

When I was in Scotland last year, I visited a special hydroelectric power station. It is inside a mountain. It rains a lot in the mountains of Scotland and there are huge lakes high up. The water falls down through large pies to a generator in the power station. The energy of the moving water turns the generator and this produces electricity. A big transformer then increases the number of volts(伏特) to over 4000000. The electricity goes through cables to different parts of Scotland, England and Wales.

The inside of the power station was very clean because it doesn't burn coal or gas. It was just like being in a hospital, really.

I think hydroelectric power stations are much safer than nuclear power stations. They are also better for the earth than coal or gas power stations. Some countries like Sweden and the Netherlands have said they aren't to build any more nuclear power stations. They are going to try to make clean electricity using water or wind. I think we should do the same and spend more money in building hydroelectric power stations.

(1)What can be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.Future if Electricity

B.Dangers of Nuclear Power

C.Electricity in Scotland

D.Electricity from Water

(2)We can learn that the underlined word“hydroelectric”means “using________.”

[ ]

A.the energy of the water to clean the air

B.waterpower to produce electricity
