When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing. Rivers get polluted. Trees are knocked down. Natural resources are exhausted. That's what makes the Galapagos Islands so special--it's one of the few pristine (原始状态的) places on Earth that nature can truly call its own.

For people used to having wild animals run at the scent of humans, a visit to the Galapagos is a real eyeopening experience. Over 1,600km west of Ecuador (厄瓜多尔), the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people. Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins (企鹅) to count the eggs in their nests.

The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago, and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging the environment or putting stress on the animals. Tourists have to pay a $100 daily visitors fee, and can't step off the boat unless accompanied (陪同) by an official guide. Once on the islands, you have to stay on the trail, but that rarely presents a problem: the animals are so curious about people that they'll usually come up to say hello.

“It's a little like being in a zoo,”said one traveler.“But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals are looking at us.”

Aside from the wildlife, one of the islands' more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the catch is that there's no postman to collect them. Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home, and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.

1.The Galapagos Islands are _____.

[ ]

A.terribly polluted B.near Ecuador

C.in the Atlantic Ocean D.independent of Ecuador

2.Which animal is NOT mentioned in the passage?

[ ]

A.Whales. B.Sea lions.

C.Goats. D.Dolphins.

3.On the Galapagos Islands the mail is delivered by _____.

[ ]

A.the government B.the post office

C.the tourists D.the guides

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.The Islands Galapagos B.Humans and Nature

C.Go Head to Head D.Ecuador--An Island Country

A shop wholly run by a robot has been set up in downtown Tokyo, capital of Japan. The shop was set up by a Japan-based company.

When a customer comes to the shop, he will be given a pencil and a piece of paper. When he is looking at the shelves for goods, he can write down the number of each thing he wants to buy. Then he may come to a machine, which looks like a bank ATM (Automatic Teller Machine), and press the buttons to tell the machine the numbers and some other information about the goods. The machine will soon give the customer a bill. When the customer puts money into the machine, change will be given back at once, and the words“Thank You for Coming”will appear on the screen of the machine. The robot will select the ordered goods for the customer according to computer center information.

The robot, as round as a bucket, is able to decide the weight and size of any goods. It wilt always take the bigger and heavier goods first before picking up the smaller and lighter ones such as cakes or biscuits. Within half a minute, the robot will make everything ready, and wait for a customer at a certain delivery place.

The shop is to meet the needs of the public for the so-called“silent purchase (购买)”. It means that a customer can do shopping through mail or even an international computer network without facing the shop owner. This will reduce the cost on the part of the shop, and thus lower the price of goods for the customer.

The robot now can deal with most goods in a fast and easy way. Only when dealing with those goods needing special care will the robot ask for help.

1.When you want to buy something in the robot shop, first you have to _____.

[ ]

A.put money into the machine

B.press the buttons of the machine and tell it what you want to buy

C.find out what you want to buy and write down the numbers on paper

D.go into the shop and select the goods you want with the help of the machine

2.In this shop, the robot can do shopping quickly at a lower price, so _____.

[ ]

A.the shop has a great future

B.customers often get false goods

C.few customers go there to buy goods

D.the shop will close down soon

3.What would be the best title for the text?

[ ]

There was a time in early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple: Men had not invented the week.

In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities, they wanted to have a special day. Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh day. On this day they didn't work, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes. In this way the week came into being. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day(which was Saturday).

When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after five planets, the sun and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names for their days of the week: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars, of Mercury(水星), of Venus(木星), and of Saturn(土星).

We get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the Anglo-Saxons, who called most of the days after their own gods.

(1)In the early days there were no names for the days, because men ________.

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence(个人的智力). The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Hunan brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual——the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped (妨碍) environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

Demonstrated by the case history of the identical(完全相同的) twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separated foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was reared to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environment difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Peter's I. Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

(1)This selection can best be titled ________.

[ ]

A.Measuring Your Intelligence

B.Intelligence and Environment

C.The Case of Peter and Mark

D.How the Brian Influences Intelligence

(2)The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that ________.

[ ]

A.human brains differ considerably

B.the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligence

C.environment is crucial(决定性的) in determining a person's intelligence

D.persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence

(3)The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that ________.

[ ]

A.individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same level

B.an individual's intelligences is determined only by his environment

C.lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence

D.changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up with their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers.

Most reading faults can be traced to early school training. According to Dr. Betts, two persons out of five in school were forced to read material too difficult for them to understand at the time, a frustration(令人沮丧的) experience which left them with bad reading habits.

Fortunately, almost anyone can learn to read faster and with more comprehension. Age makes little difference. According to a recent study of 138 students at The Reading Laboratory, Inc., all age groups showed a marked increase in reading rate after training from 93 percent for the 50~90 age group to 142 percent for the 20~29. Dr. Mila Banton Smith, director of New York University's Reading Institute, says that the average adult student, in 28 training hours, nearly triples(三倍的) his reading speed and boosts(增长) his comprehension by about 30 percent.

The best way to improve your reading, of course, is to enroll (登记)in a reading clinic. If there's no clinic handy(手边的), you can improve your reading ability yourself——provided you have no eyes trouble. (If reading tires you easily or makes your eyes or head ache, you should consult a doctor.)

(1)To many people today, ________.

[ ]

A.reading quickly is easy

B.reading quickly and comprehending quickly can ensure their success

C.reading is only for fun

D.reading can ensure their success

(2)Most reading faults are ________.

[ ]

A.due to early school training

B.a frustrating experience

C.made by reading difficult materials

D.made by reading carelessly

(3)Who can learn to read fast and with comprehension?

[ ]

A.Teachers only. B.Students only.

C.A few people. D.Almost everybody.

(4)According to the passage, what is the best way to improve one's reading?

[ ]

A.Go to a doctor.
