While the rest of the world carried on cycling during the 1950s and 1960s, America forgot how even high-school children would drive to school. Recently there has been something of a renaissance(复兴) in cycling, and in many areas it is a very useful way of getting around, especially where bike paths or bike routes have been built. You may well want to buy, hire or borrow a bike.

There are two important consequences(后果) of this earlier drop in cycling in the USA. One is that many people do not know how to cycle. That is, cyclists often behave more like pedestrians(行人) than motorists: they ride on the sidewalk or on the wrong side of the road;they do not care for stop signs or traffic lights; they ride without lights at night; they give no hand signals. The other consequence is that cycling is regarded by many people not so much as a way of getting from one place to another but as a way of life, a form of exercise, etc. As a result, large numbers of young Americans have ten-speed racing bikes. These are very high and fast and great if you are cycling long distances, riding up mountains or racing. At first, though, you may find them awkward for cycling in town, sight-seeing or shopping--they are expensive, uncomfortable and hard to control until you get used to them, and unsuitable for rough stony roads.

There are also ordinary bikes around. If you get hold of one of these, you may find that the brakes work by pedaling(蹬车) backwards. This is perhaps safer than ordinary brakes when it is wet, but it seems to be less effective. This arrangement also means you can't pedal backwards in order to get the pedals in the right place for getting on or moving off.

1.The passage gives us a brief introduction to _____.

[ ]

A.advantages of bikes

B.cycling in America

C.American transportation

D.how to ride a bike

2.Young Americans prefer racing bikes because they _____.

[ ]

A.provide exciting exercise

B.are easy to learn

C.are safer to ride

D.are expensive and popular

3.Which of the following does NOT result from the early drop in cycling in the USA?

[ ]

A.Cyclists do not care for traffic lights.

B.People ride on the wrong side of the roads.

C.Cycling is not considered a way of transportation.

D.People have to pedal backwards to stop the bike.

4.From the passage we can learn that in the middle of the 20th century _____.

[ ]

A.many Americans enjoyed cycling

B.cycling was popular outside America

C.racing bikes were better than ordinary ones

D.there were no special roads for bikes in America

In the past, Americans used to think of the United States as a“melting pot”of immigrants(移民) from many different cultures to the United States, their old ways melted away and they became part of a completely new culture. The United States was likened to a big pot of soup, which had bits of flavor(味道,滋味) from each different culture. All of the different cultures were so well blended(混合,掺杂) together that it formed its own new flavor.

Today, Americans realize that the simple“melting pot”theory is less true. Instead, different groups of people keep many of their old customs. Often groups of Americans from the same culture band together. They live together in distinctive communities, such as“Chinatowns”or“Little Italy”--areas populated almost exclusively(惟一,仅) by Americans of a single ethnic group--which can be found in many large American cities. Living in ethnic neighborhoods gives new Americans the security of sharing a common language and common traditions with people who understand them.

In time, however, people from different backgrounds mix together. They also mix with native-born Americans. Old traditions give way to new customs. The children of immigrants are often eager to adopt new, American ways. They often want to dress in American fashions, to speak English and to follow American social customs. By one estimate(估计), about 80 percent of European immigrants marry outside their own ethnic groups by the time they reach the third generation. Third generation means that their great-grandparents were immigrants. Yet as successive generations become more“Americanized”, they often retain significant elements of their ethnic heritage.

1.What does the text mainly talk about?

[ ]

A.The American way of life.

B.Immigrants vs.native-born Americans.

C.Old traditions vs.new customs.

D.The multi-cultural heritage of the United States.

2.Why does the author mention“Chinatowns”in the 2nd paragraph?

[ ]

A.To give an example that many people keep their old customs.

B.To show that Chinese cherish their old traditions.

C.To contrast(对比) the Chinese way of life with that of the Italian's.

D.To give an example of the Americanization(美国化).

3.The underlined word“ethnic”in the last sentence most probably means _____.

[ ]

A.moral B.national

C.cultural D.social

4.The underlined word“Americanized”generally means _____.

[ ]

A.immigrants who still retain their tradition, but behave like Americans in some ways

B.immigrants who still retain their own language, but speak English sometimes

C.immigrants who reject the traditions of their parents, and accept Western culture only

D.immigrants, naturalized by native American culture, in character, way of thinking etc. though still retaining some ethnic heritage

The shopping malls are designed for only one thing: encouraging people to buy, buy, buy. How do they do this? Well, it is something of an art, an art that has been brought to perfection in the 50 years since malls first started appearing in America.

Every aspect(方面) of mall design is carefully considered to appeal to(吸引) the customer's psychological(心理的) needs. This starts with the overall environment. Tests have shown that people feel most relaxed and comfortable at a temperature of 24-26 degrees. So, this is the air temperature of most malls. If it is any hotter, people may become too lazy to walk. Any cooler, they may rush around and leave before they've spent enough money.

The choice of colors is also very important. Dark colors like orange or purple can make people feel irritable or unhappy. With such feelings, they are not likely to do much shopping. Therefore, very dark colors are almost never used in malls. Instead, walls are usually painted in light colors, which make customers feel relaxed and give the mail a spacious feeling.

The arrangement of space in the mall is also done with great care. Research shows that most people are unwilling to walk more than two hundred meters to shop. In one of the new giant malls this could be a problem. The walkways in malls can be made curved(弯曲的) or angled to hide their true length. Or they can be broken up by fountains(喷泉), art displays or any of those other things that you thought were just there to entertain you.

1.From this passage we know that malls _____.

[ ]

A.are where people go for entertainment

B.came into being in the early 1950s in America

C.are places for art displays and social activities

D.have been perfect places for shopping since they were born

2.According to this passage, a mall with dark-coloured walls _____.

A.is likely to enjoy good business

B.looks peaceful and pleasant

C.costs more to be lighted

D.is likely to have poor business

3.What are the fountains and art displays for in a mall?

[ ]

A.To make the walkways seem shorter as well as entertain the customers.

B.Just to make the customers feel happy when they are taking a rest.

C.To cool the mall so that the customers will buy more.

D.To beautify the mall to attract more customers and children.

4.Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Malls are the best places to do shopping in.

B.The choice of colors is very important in designing malls.

C.Malls are carefully designed to encourage people to buy more and more.

D.Without good service there will be no good business.

Washington--Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for French teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer.

  It's not easy, even desperate(希望渺小).

“We have many children left to place: 40 out of 75”, said Straub, who works for a Paris-based foreign-exchange programme called LEC.

When the exchange programme started 50 years ago, family life was more accommodating. For one thing, more mothers stayed home.

But now, increasing numbers of women work outside home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for the 30000 teenagers who annually come from abroad to spend all academic year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who participate in summer programmes.

School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic(异国情调的).

In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their appeals(呼吁) to include everyone from young couples to retirees.

“We are open to many different types of families,”said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25-year old programme that sends about 30000 teenagers on academic-year exchange programme worldwide.

For elderly people, exchange students“keep us young--they really do,”said Jean Foster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Porst Denmark.

When the TV viewer turns on his set, what sort of programs does he have to choose from? You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that's not the case. In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high--34.8%, and the fun-loving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information(news, documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts take place during peak viewing times. In Japan though, more than 60% of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind or another--just another example of the business-like Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4%. The Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They don't go in for entertainment either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports, etc. You will find more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That's understandable in a country experiencing social and political changes. The Italians rely on TV to tell them what's going on--and events are happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage of time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.

1.Based on this passage, the percentage of TV broadcasting hours devoted to education is greatest in _____.

[ ]

A.Japan B.Italy

C.Canada D.the United States

2.More news information programs are broadcast on Italian TV than anywhere else because the Italians _____.

[ ]

A.are interested in what is happening in the world

B.like to experience social arid political changes

C.like watching news programmes better than anything else

D.expect TV to tell them about what is going on in their country

3.So far as the broadcasting hours devoted to entertainment are concerned, _____.

[ ]

A.the Japanese figure is the highest in the world

B.the U.S. figure is smaller than the U. K. figure

C.the U. K. figure is second to the Japanese figure

D.the Canadian figure is higher than that of any other country

4.From this passage, we learn that most TV stations in the world devote more broadcasting hours to _____.

[ ]

A.educational programs

B.entertainment programs

C.news programs

D.sports programs

5.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?

[ ]

A.In most countries the education channel has the largest number of viewers.

B.The television is a tool for education rather than for entertainment.

C.Educational programs are the most popular in most countries.

D.People tend to think most TV stations devote more hours to entertainment.

Percy's mysterious(神秘的) disappearance upset every body a great deal. Percy is a performer in a night-club and just before he was due to appear on the stage, it was discovered that he was not in his usual place. There was certainly good cause to worry because Percy is a dangerous snake and he is over six feet long.

The search for Percy lasted several days and a great number of people joined in. As Percy could not possibly have gone out into the streets, he must still be hiding somewhere in the club. The searchers found that some of the boards in Percy's room had rotted and there was a gap(间隙) in the floor. It seemed likely that Percy had slipped under the floor and then crept behind a wall where there was a nice warm central heating unit.

The manager of the club suggested that Percy might have found some mice behind the wall and eaten them. Since then he had probably curled round the warm pipes and gone to sleep. As a snake that has had a satisfying meal can sleep for several days continuously, a determined effort had to be made to get him out. The hot water was therefore turned off immediately and the temperature in the room fell to a few degrees above zero. But Percy, who has the reputation(名誉) of being a lazy creature, made no attempt to come out. The manager then tried something else. He placed a dish full of tasty delicacies(精美食品) near the broken floor-boards. Again Percy failed to appear. With the hot water turned off, it was decided that Percy must be freezing by now, so an electric fire was put into his room to encourage him to come in and warm himself. To help him make up his mind even more quickly, cold air was blown under the floor-boards. Even these measures did not succeed, so there was only one thing left to do. The next morning, the whole wall was carefully knocked down brick by brick so as not to frighten Percy with too much noise. The hot water pipes were gradually laid bare, but, to their astonishment, the searchers found no sign of Percy anywhere.

1.Why did Percy's mysterious disappearance upset everybody a great deal?

The dark, narrow streets of London were dangerous places for a lad to wander during the ruling of Charles Ⅱ (1660-1685). Bands of hoodlums(强盗), in the pay of some ships' captains, were found everywhere. Their job was to seize as many boys as they could find and carry them off to waiting ships in the harbor. Many a pale city lad would wake up from a drugged sleep, or a blow on the head, to find himself on the high seas, bound for the New World. There he might become a farmhand, an apprentice, or perhaps a household servant.

Thousands of unsuspecting youths were kidnapped who were never to return to the land of their birth. The traffic in young boys became, in time, a great public scandal, and this is the way it had come about.

America desperately needed colonists. At first, many people had come willingly, lured by tales of quick wealth and unlimited opportunity. But once they arrived, they found it to be a far rougher place than they had imagined. It was true that, there was opportunity, but hard work was needed to make it pay off. Many of the new colonists, hoping for easy fortuned, were not used to the difficulties of hard manual labour.

Nor could they manage the large farms by themselves. They needed help of every sort: for planting, for harvesting, for building their houses, etc. Some few skilled workers had come and set up shops--blacksmiths, carpenters, wheelwrights(修造轮子的工匠) and such--but they, too, were in need of help. Without apprentices and laborers, they could not possibly do all the work that the colonists required.

British shipowners offered free transportation to all those who would come, in return for an agreement to work for seven years without wages. Thousands of immigrants accepted the offer. After seven years of service they were farmers in their own right--and needed help. So there was an increasing need for workers. When the captains could not get colonists any other way, they hired hoodlums to seize any young boys they could lay hands on.

Over 100000 youngsters were taken to America in this way. Kidnapping became such an open scandal that in 1682 the London Council passed a law forbidding any person under fourteen to be bound into service without the knowledge and consent of his parents.

B.there was a lot of work on the farms

[ ]

A.Because they had no money to pay for their voyage to the New World.

B.Because they could become farmers in their own right after their seven-year work.

C.Because they had no land of their own when they just arrived in America.

D.Because they were kidnapped and forced to sign it.

5.We can infer from the passage that the British government passed a law in 1682 because _____.

Leeds, England--A Leeds University psychology(心理学) professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.

“The hate we hold within us is a cancer,”Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart's first 20-week workshop in London--a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people.“People have lots of negative attitudes towards forgiveness,”he said.“People confuse(混同) forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.”

Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.

“The main idea is to give you guidelines on how to look at various kinds of angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitudes towards the person you are angry with.”said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.
