Watching TV is a major activity and has great effect on children and adolescents．Children in the United States watch an average of three to four hours of television a day．By the time of high school graduation, they will have spent more time watching television than they spent in the classroom．Although television can relax, inform, and keep our children company, it may also affect them in undesirable ways．

　　Watching television takes away the time for important activities such as reading, school work, doing exercise and family union．Besides, children may also get incorrect information from television．They often can not tell the difference between the fantasy(虚拟) and the reality(现实)．They are affected by thousands of advertisements on TV, many of which are for alcohol, junk food, fast food and so on．

　　Active parenting can make sure that children have a positive(积极的)experience with television．Parents can help by doing the following：Don't allow children to watch long blocks of TV, but help them choose programs．Children's shows on public TV are appropriate(适宜的), but soap operas and adult talk shows are not．Set certain periods when the television will be off．Stop them from sitting in front of the TV doing homework．Meal time is a good time for family members to talk with each other, not for watching television．

　　Encourage discussions with your children about what they are seeing as you watch shows with them．Point out positive behavior, such as friendship, love for others and so on．While watching, connect what they are seeing with history, books, places of interest, and personal events．Talk about your personal and family values as they are related to the show．Ask children to compare what they are watching with real events．Talk about the realistic results of violence．Discuss the role of advertising and its influence on buying．Encourage your child to develop his or her own hobbies, do sports, and get along well with peers．With proper guidance, your child can learn to use television in a healthy and positive way．

　　Most people think of honey as a tasty substitute (替代品) for sugar in their tea, or as a topping on a sandwich．So what gives the honey its healing powers?

　　For one thing, its thick, sticky consistency(黏稠度)probably helps coat and ease the throat, says Katherine Beals, a dietician at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City．Substances called antioxidants(抗氧化剂) may also be part of the answer, Beals says．Antioxidants,which are also found in foods such as blueberries and dark chocolate, protect our cells from damage．

　　Studies show that antioxidant levels in the body rise after someone eats honey．All honey contains antioxidants, but certain types contain more than others．

　　There are more than 300 types of honey．Color, flavor, and health benefits depend on which types of flowers honey-producing bees visit．

　　Most of the honey we buy in U．S．grocery stores is made by bees that visit clover(三叶草) plants．Darker honeys are generally higher in antioxidants than lighter ones including clover, Beals says．

　　Honey has another health advantage．At least some types seem to kill infectious micrbes(细菌)．One honey from New Zealand has proved especially good at healing wounds when spread thickly on the skin．

　　There is no proof that eating honey will help prevent colds, Beals says．But if your throat is sore and you can't stop coughing, it might make you feel better．And a little dose of sweetness might just cheer you up!

　　Almost 10 years ago, I sent a letter to a readers' column of a magazine, writing about my dream doll．“The doll does not need to be a luxurious(奢侈的) one, but she must look as if she listens when I talk to her, like the doll－Emily－in A Little Princess．Several weeks later, a letter came from an unknown Japanese lady．She had read my letter at a Japanese bookshop in Denver．

　　“I got interested in your dream doll,” she wrote．“I have made bisque(桔黄色的) dolls as my hobby for a long time．Perhaps none of my dolls is good enough to suit your dream, but I would be happy if one of my dolls could join your doll family．”

　　That is how I got Rosa．She was very beautiful and well-made．To be honest, I had never imagined my dream doll as something so beautiful．Up to that time, my doll family had consisted of just an odd mixture of rather poor, old creatures．Sometimes, their very helplessness seemed to be the main reason I was attracted to them．

　　Now, this Rosa here was far from any kind of poorness．She might not need anyone to take care of her．While I was looking at her, she was also looking at me－quite patiently．Besides being beautiful, I noticed she looked good-natured, innocent(天真的), and very sympathetic．

　　“Well, isn't she like Emily?” I asked myself．“To have someone you can nurse is wonderful, but you may also need somebody else who is willing to share your problems and pleasures．Wasn't that the quality I saw in Emily who gave me the idea of the dream doll in the first place?”

　　About 100 years ago, Ira Remsen, the Chairperson of the Chemistry Department at Johns Hopkins University and one of the pioneers of chemical education in America, wrote the following:

　　While reading a textbook of chemistry, I came upon the statement “nitric acid(硝酸) acts upon copper(铜)．” I was getting tired of reading such absurd stuff and I decided to see what this meant．Copper was more or less familiar to me, for copper cents were then in use．I had seen a bottle marked “nitric acid” on a table in the doctor's office．I did not know its characteristic, but I was getting on and likely to learn．The spirit of adventure was upon me．Having nitric acid and copper, I had only to learn what the words “act upon” meant．Then the statement that nitric acid acts upon copper would be something more than mere words．

　　All was still．In the interest of knowledge I was even willing to give up one of the few copper cents then in my possession．I put one of them on the table; opened the bottle marked “nitric acid;” poured some of the liquid on the copper; and prepared to make an observation．

　　Do you know what I saw? The cent has already changed greatly．A greenish-blue liquid foamed(起泡沫)and fumed(冒烟) over the cent and over the table．The air in the neighborhood of the performance became dark red．A great colored cloud arose．How should I stop this? I tried to get rid of the mess by picking it up and throwing it out of the window, which I had opened．I learned another fact －nitric acid not only acts upon copper but it acts upon fingers．The pain led to another experiment．I drew my fingers across my trousers and another fact was discovered．Nitric acid also acts upon trousers．

　　Ira Remsen also recognized the importance of the laboratory experience in chemistry．However, I was very fortunate that this particular experiment did not have terrible results．Can you suggest some safer approaches to finding out what was the meaning of the words “acts upon”?

　　Everybody hates rats．But in the earthquake capitals of the world－Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey－rats will soon be man's new best friends．

　　What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs．Why? Because they can smell people．Dogs save lives．They help rescuers to find living people．But dogs are big and they can't get into small space．So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives：the rat．

　　How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people．When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal．This is sent to a small radio transmitter pack strapped to the animal's back．Rescuers will be able to follow the rat's position by tracking these signals．

　　Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better．Christiane Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around．Rats are good at that．Rats can also see in the dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!”

　　The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic．A rat could get into space we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe．” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building ( but only after an earthquake, of course)．

　　On May 21, some American scientists were working at the computers to look for information they needed．Suddenly they saw a lot of very bright red spots crossing the computers' screens．At the same time, the computers were working much slower．To find out what was happening, they stopped their work to check some parts of the computers．To their horror, they found out that most of their stored information was got rid of by computer viruses(病毒)．Obviously all these computers had been infected(感染)by computer viruses．

　　It is said that the computer viruses were made by two or three Philippine young men who are fond of playing tricks．They all had excellent education．They created the viruses just to show their intelligence(才智)．The kind of computer virus is named “I Love You” virus．This virus can hide in computer for a long time．When the time comes, they will attack the computers by lowering the important functions, damaging(破坏) their normal programs or even getting rid of a great deal of information which operators of the computers often use or store．What's more, it can reproduce(复制) itself in great numbers within a short time．

　　We have come to know that “I Love You ” virus often attacks computers on Monday and that it is spreading to many computers in the world．Among the countries that suffered computer viruses in recent years are Britain, Australia, Switzerland and the US．Those who made the computer viruses have been found out slowly and carefully．But till now, how to get rid of the terrible viruses remains a problem．

　　Mary is a quiet girl．As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her．But recently she has become somewhat mysterious and not so open as before．She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key．Her mother cannot help worrying about her：what if she falls in love, which is too early for a girl of her age?

　　Next morning when the mother went to the daughter's room to do some tidying, she found her diary left at her pillow．After a few minutes' hesitation, she eventually opened it to the entry of the night before．It reads：Mum, it's love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn't．Holding the diary, the mother fell into thought．

　　If Catlin was the painter of the American Indians and Bierstadt the painter of the Rocky Mountains, the artist of the Western cowboys and settlers was Remington．Born in New York, the son of a wealthy publisher, Remington was a boxer and a football player at Yale University．But as a boy he loved horses and fed on the journals of some famous writers．

　　At the age of nineteen, he left college to look for adventures．He travelled from Montana to Texas as a prospector(勘探者)．Remington had always been interested in journalism．Now he began to write about and to paint and draw what he saw．The subject of the Winning of the West attracted the East．Magazines and newspapers were filled with account of prospectors' adventures and battles with cattle thieves and other outlaws－all the tales that were then news and have become legends since．There were also stories by many other writers．Often these were presented by drawings and paintings from Remington's hand, and he was a successful journalist just as he was a great artist．
