　　You are standing under the most famous neon(氖)lights in the centre of London, waiting to cross the road．Suddenly the traffic stops．You hear the distant sounds of cheering, clapping and shouting．Then, like a multi-colored train,(2000 people with wheels on their feet zoom past you．You have just witnessed⑧ the London Skate, a twice weekly roller-skate event that attracts people in their hundreds and thousands London Skate is a completely free tour of the streets of London－the only condition is that you go along on roller-skates．It lasts between two and three hours and by the end of it you have skated between 10 and 12 miles．

　　The skate snakes(蜿蜒而行)round the streets of London along several different routes．Many of the routes pass by tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben．

　　Marshals(交通协调员)go ahead of the group, stopping the traffic so that people can skate as safely as possible．Everyone is welcome to take part and people from the age of 4 to 63 years old join the fun．“I love it very much, it is amazing．It feels just like a carnival(狂欢节)，”said Celeste Beverage regular skater．

　　Roller-skating is really taking off across Europe and America．It is a very good way to keep fit and can be practised anywhere there is a smooth surface．Many big cities in Western Europe and in the US now have a regular group skating event．

　　The biggest skates take place in Paris and Munich and tens of thousands of fans show up on warm evenings．“Roller-skating is taking over the world,”said Julian Grenoble, a 25-year-old ski shop employee from London．Grenoble went to the Paris-Roller(Paris skate)regularly until he moved to Britain．

　　“It's so exciting to skate in Pairs．Everyone skates so fast and puts in their best efforts!”he said．The Paris-Roller is well known because of the huge attendance, the presence of marshals(高级军官)and the police protection．Paris is a great city for roller-skating because of its long wide streets and smooth surfaces．Roller-skating is also becoming more popular in China among young people and children．Skating fans' favorite places to practice in China are big squares．

　　As public transportation goes, the system in Shanghai is fairly good．It is reliable, frequent, and cheap．The buses will take you to virtually④ any place in the city．Though the metro(地铁)is forever overcrowded, it will take you to the major hotspots in downtown cheaply．Even the taxi fare is cheap by North American standards．

　　What may trouble the city in the next decade is how to invest best on transportation infrastructure(设施)．With the city's population growing rapidly and the 2010 Expo approaching, the transportation system simply cannot handle the expected traffic in the downtown area．

　　Lessons from big cities such as Los Angeles taught us that blindly building more roads and high-ways would only exacerbate(使……恶化)traffic overcrowding．The expansion of the metro and a better bus system will go a long way to relieve the blocking．I think the biggest headache in the near future is that, as more and more people can afford it, there will be more privately-owned cars on the road．

　　Compared to Shanghai, it is a joy to drive in Canada．It is still a major headache to drive in major cities such as Toronto or Vancouver, but only in the downtown center and in rush hours．Since the population is so small in Canada(only 30 million), more people live in residential areas(suburban)away from the downtown area．Land is comparatively cheap so city tends to spread out to a large area．

　　The only convenient way to travel around is by car．Biking is a healthy and environment-friendly way to move around, but it is only possible if you live close to your work and in good weather．The subway system only exists in Toronto and it is very old．Buses can take you to major residential and commercial areas, but it does not run very frequently(at least not so in Vancouver)In the winter, waiting for a bus in rainy, freezing Vancouver weather is very unpleasant．

　　I do have a bone to pick with Shanghai traffic．Despite its wonderful transport infrastructure(基础), the people hardly ever follow the traffic rules．

　　To master a language one must be able to speak and understand the spoken language as well as to read and write．Lenin and his wife Krupskaya once translated a long English book into Russian．But when they went to England in 1902, English people couldn't understand a word they said and they couldn't understand what was said to them．Now more and more foreigners are coming to China and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study．So the spoken language is becoming more and more important．

　　Speaking, of course, can't go without listening．If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly．The sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same．If you don't listen carefully, you'll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers．
