Why did the chicken cross the road? To get the other side. Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bear and mountain lion can cross the road.
“Millions of animals die each year on U.S.roads,” the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S.today.The main reason? Roadkill.
“Ecopassages” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads.“These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.
But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes.Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them.Animals seem to be catching on.Animals as different as salamanders(蜥蜴)and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!

You don’t need every word to understand the meaning of what you read.In fact, too much emphasis on separate words both and reduces your comprehension.
First, any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud, is inefficient. If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the words with your lips, you read poorly.Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency. One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat; another is “hearing” each word as you read.
These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago.The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together.Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning.
It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for ?expressing? the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought, and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness.
An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud. He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time.If he “says” or “hears” words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last ten of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
“I think we are knocking at the door of immortality(永生),”said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future.“I think by 2075 ________ and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).”
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jesery Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术)make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past.“There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said.“Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years.”
However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years.Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live.“It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know, could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?”said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Center.“At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

Recently, many states of America have approved a program that will link increase in teachers’ pay to improvements in students’ test scores. The program will take effect next school year.It will increase teacher’s pay if his or her students increase their scores on the Comprehensive Assessment Test, which measures reading and mathematics knowledge. It is now used to decide if students will pass to the next grade level. The state gives extra money to schools whose scores are good or have increased from the year before.Normally, the money is divided among the school workers.
Those teachers who teach reading and mathematics will be judged on the test scores only. That is, how much their students have improved since the year before. But those who teach other subjects like geography, art and music will have to be judged differently.
Teacher groups around the country generally oppose such a program. They say it is not fair to judge teachers by how well students’ scores on a test. They say many things affect student’s test scores, such as learning problems or lack of sleep. They point out that there are other ways to judge strengths and weaknesses of students. In addition, some teachers say the quality of teaching will decrease if teachers are forced to compete with each other for money and praise. They fear that teachers will refuse to work in schools where many children have learning problems or do not speak English well.

American government has suggested a new plan to increase the study of foreign languages in schools.
Research has shown that childhood is a better time than manhood to learn foreign languages. However, ________ learn only English.Less than one third of American elementary schools teach foreign languages.Only 44 percent of American high school students take a foreign language. And 70 percent of them are learning Spanish. What’s more, the United States doesn’t have enough foreign teachers.
The plan calls for teaching more children foreign languages, as early as the age of four. Most of the new teaching would be in languages not widely taught now in American schools. These include Arabic, Chinese, Farsi(波斯语), Hindi(北印度语)and Russian. It also aims to increase foreign language instruction in colleges and graduate schools. The hope is to bring more foreign language speakers into government service.
Administration officials will ask for 114 million dollars in 2007 to start the program. The money would be used to help foreign-language students pay for their educations. The plan also calls for sending more American students to other countries to study. And it calls for bringing more foreign language teaching assistants to the United States.

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, new study findings suggest. In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.
The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive feeling style” can help get rid of the common cold and other illnesses.Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness improving immune(免疫)function and subjective as in happy people being less troubled by a throat ache or runny nose.
“People with a positive feeling style may have different immune responses to the virus,” explained Dr Sheldon Cohen.“And when they do get a cold, they may stop their illness from being more severe.”
Cohen had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less easy to catch a cold. However, some questions remained as to whether the feeling itself had the effect.
For the now study, the researchers ask 193 healthy adults to complete some standard measures of personalities and feeling style. Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive feeling style, while those ________ had a negative style.
The researchers gave them some drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus.Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, or sneezing they had, while the researchers collected objective data like daily mucus(黏液)production, Cohen and his partners found that warm people were likely to keep cold at bay.

You are about to become a college freshman. You enter college expecting to leave with a degree. The following are tips on how to get the most out of your college education.
Time Management
“Man is first a social animal, then a rational(理性的)one.”So you may find it hard to say “No” each time your roommate wants to see a movie when you need to read Paradise Lost(《失乐园》).
Think about what you want from college and from friends.Study after breakfast, between classes, whatever works best for you.Don’t cut off all social contacts, which are as vital(重要的)to surviving in college as reading.Study Hegel(黑格尔)first, then catch a late movie.
Study Method
Would you take a trip by________ instead of reading a map? Of course not.Studying in college demands more independence than in high school.Survey the material first to get a sense of it; ask some questions; write down key ideas; tell yourself the essence(本质)of what you’ve read and review it.
Keeping up
Professors may not notice whether you attend a large lecture, but you could notice later on.Some professors use lectures to discuss material not found in the reading on which they will base an exam.Others stress key points.Skip at your own risk.If you must miss a lecture, get the notes in time.If too much time elapses(逝去), the notes will make no sense.Never fall more than a week behind in reading the notes. If you don’t do the reading, you won’t understand the lecture.
