　　If he had not followed his teacher's advice, Asafa Powell would not be the fastest man on the planet．

　　The 24-year-old Jamaican(牙买加人)made history by clocking a time of 9.74 seconds in the 100-meter race at the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Italy last week．He improved on his previous record by more than 0.03 seconds．

　　His reaction to breaking the world record was typical Powell．No crowd-pleasing antics(滑稽的动作)or boasting．Instead, a polite and shy Powell only laughed and smiled．“Me, the fastest man?It is unbelievable,”he said．“My next goal is to win gold at the Beijing Olympics．”Powell displayed his talent for running in his school years．He was always the fastest．In races, he would often race against much older boys and still beat them．But it wasn't always his ambition to be an athlete．Instead, Powell wanted to be a footballer．“It was my teacher, Mrs Fraser, who told me I could be a runner．I didn't always do what my teachers told me．But this time I did．”So he began training every day．In his high school yearbook he wrote his goal was“to break the world record”．

　　He achieved his goal, but it does not mean he has had a great career．Although Powell has been the fastest person in the world for the last two years, he has struggled to get results at major competitions．

　　He finished fifth at Athens Olympics in 2004．Two weeks ago in the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, Powell's performance was disappointing．He panicked in the final and he could only finish third．

　　“I was too nervous in Osaka．I thought too much about my race and the time I was hoping to achieve,”he said．“I even forgot how I should have run in the last 40 m of a race．”

　　But his record has put him back onto the center stage．After all, Asafa in Jamaican means“rising to the occasion．”So will Powell win his first major tide in the Beijing Olympic Games?We will wait and see．

　　People at work asked me if I tried to talk my way out of it．Frankly, it never occurred to me．I felt guilty(有罪的)．Now I no longer have a clean driving record．Please be careful out there, as a moment's distraction can lead to tragedy(悲剧)．

　　Every year all sorts of different festivals are celebrated in Britain．Two of the most well- known British festivals are Bonfire Night and Halloween．

　　Bonfire Night has an interesting history．In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and some of his followers tried to blow up the British Houses of Parliament．They hoped that if they succeeded, they could take control of England and become its new rulers．Guy Fawkes and his men dug a tunnel under one of the Parliament buildings, and hid 36 barrels(桶)of gunpowder there．Fortunately, on November 5^th, Guy Fawkes was caught just before he was able to light the fuse(导火线)．He and all his followers were burned to death．

　　Today, people in Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes’ capture by lighting fires and holding fireworks displays．

　　Halloween is celebrated in Britain on the night of October 31^st．There are many customs associated with Halloween．One of these is the game of ‘trick or treat’．Children, dressed up as witches, ghosts or monsters, knock on their neighbours’ doors, and shout ‘trick or treat!’ If they are lucky, they receive a ‘treat’–a bar of chocolate, or some sweets or some money．If, however, their neighbours refuse to give them anything, they play a trick on them．They might spray their front door with shaving foam(剃须膏), or knock on their doors and then run away!

　　Another game played at Halloween is ‘bobbing for apples’．In this game, a bowl is filled with water, and apples are placed in it．Children then have to take a bite from one of the apples without using their hands．This game is difficult and messy(杂乱的), but great fun!
