　　There are hundreds of TV channels in the United States．Americans get a lot of entertainment and information from TV．Most people probably watch it for entertainment only．For some people, however, TV is where they get the news of the day．But some new TV programs or shows put entertainment and news together．

　　This new kind of program in the United States is called“information”, which means information(info-)and entertainment(-tainment)．These kinds of programs use actors to act out news stories, making the news of the day more interesting and exciting to people．The shows also use special effects．

　　An example of infotainment is the show“America’s Most Wanted”．The producers of this program get stories from real cases that the police have dealt with．In most of these cases, the police never found the person who committed the crime(犯罪)．Sometimes they caught the criminal, but he or she ran away again．They use actors to play the parts of all the people in the case．At the end of the story, however, they always show“mug shots”, or police photographs, of the real criminals．

　　Michele Langlois is a young Canadian who works for the police as a handwriting expert．She has helped catch many criminals by using her special skill．

　　When she was only fourteen, Michel was already so interested in the differences in her school friends’ handwriting that she would spend hours studying them．After finishing college she went to France for a special two-year class to learn how to analyze handwriting at the School of Police Science．On her return, she began her work for the Quebec police．

　　Michele says that it is impossible for people to disguise(伪装)their handwriting．She can discover most of what she needs to know simply by looking at the writing with her own eyes, but she also has machines that help her analyze different kinds of paper and ink．This knowledge is often of help to the police．

　　Michele also believes that handwriting is a good sign of the kind of person the writer is．“I wouldn’t go out with a fellow if I didn’t like his handwriting,”she says．But she adds that she fell in love with her future husband, William Smith before she studied his handwriting．It later proved to be all right, however．

　　In 1939 two brothers ,Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California．They carefully chose a busy corner for their location．They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉)restaurant, then another drive-in．But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu; French fries, hamburgers, and sodas．To this small selection they added one new idea; quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips．

　　Their hamburgers were sold for fifteen cents．Cheese was another four cents．Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性)，for the brothers had developed a strict routine (程序)for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine．Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch．People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime．The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened．They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc．

　　Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines．He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营)other copies of their restaurants．The agreement struck included the right to duplicate(复制)the menu ,the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门)．

　　Today McDonald’s is really a household name．In 1976, McDonald’s had over＄l billion in total sales．Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history．

　　Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework．That was a typical(典型的)British Sunday in the 1960s．But things now could not be more different．

　　Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday．They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago．They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch．

　　Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago．Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch．They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned．Then there would be another rush to the table between 5∶00 pm and 6∶00 pm for tea．

　　But now, Britons can have brunch(早午餐)at the restaurant．Fewer people bother (添麻烦)to cook themselves．

　　“You only have two free days a week．You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London．

　　“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added．“Sundays are the last chance for the weekend－you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work．”

　　In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work．“Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study．

　　Men also do more housework now on Sundays．Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house－at the pub or playing football－before lunch．

　　When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to face the music”, it doesn't mean that he is planning to go to hear a singer or attend a concert．It is something far less unhappy than you are called in by your leader to explain why you did this and that or why you did not do this or that．

　　At some time or another, every one of us has to “face the music”, especially(尤其)as children．We can all remember father’s angry words “I want to talk to you”．And only because we did not listen to him．What a bad thing it was!

　　In the middle or at the end of every term, we students have to “face the music”．The result of the exam will decide whether we will face the music or not．If…that means parents? cold faces and contempt(轻视)of the teachers and classmates．

　　New rules and behavior standards for middle school students came out in March．Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are．The best students won't only have high marks．They will also be kids who don't dye(color)their hair, smoke or drink．The following are some of the new rules．

　　To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains．Its first use was as a shade against the sun．

　　Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times．Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, dating back to the eleventh century B．C．

　　We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade．And there was a strange thing connected with its use：it became a symbol(象征)of honor．In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office．

　　In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade．And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece．But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Rome．

　　During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared．Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century．And again it was considered a symbol of power．By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England．

　　By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe．Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight．It wasn’t until the twentieth century that women’s umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety(种种)of colors．

Henry Ford was the first person to build cars which were cheap, strong and fast．He was able to sell millions of models because be could produce them in large numbers at a time; that is,he made a great many cars of exactly the same kind．Ford’s father hoped that his son would become a farmer, but the young man did not like the idea and he went to Detroit(底特律)where he worked as a mechanic(机械师)．By the age of 29, in 1892, he had built his first car．However, the car made in this way, the famous “Model T” did not appear until 1908-five years after Ford bad started his great motor car factory．This car showed to be well-known that it remained unchanged for twenty year．Since Ford’s time, this way of producing cars in large numbers has become common in industry and has reduced the price of many goods which would otherwise be very expensive．
