　　A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he neck．One of the pots had a crack(裂缝)in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full load of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full．

　　For two years this went on daily．The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishment．Of course, the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection．After two years of this sense of bitter failure, it spoke one day to the water bearer by the stream．

　　“I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you．”

　　“Why?”asked the bearer．“What are you ashamed of?”

　　“I have been able for these last two years to deliver only half my load, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back．And you do no get full value for your efforts”the pot explained．

　　The water bearer, hearing this, said,“As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path．”

　　As they wnet up the hill, the cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it a little．

　　The bearer said,“Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?”That is because I have known about you, and I took advantage of it．I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you have watered them．For two years I have been able to pick those beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table．Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty in his house．”

　　Miller, 35, is a hard guy to figure out．He does not come from a normal background and has never lived his life in a typical way．

　　Milier didn't take a direct path to fame and fortune．He graduated from Princeton University in 1995, not with a degree in theatre or film, but in English．He didn't even act when he was in college．His only performance experience was in his university's singing group．Yet, at graduation Miller still decided to make the move to Hollywood．

　　Miller has always been different．Although he is American, he was born in Britain when his father was studying there．His family background is also a special mix of cultures．“My father is black and my mother is white．That means I have always been caught in the middle．I could be either one, which can make you feel out of place,”Miller says．

　　Following his unusual path, Miller did not start trying out for films and TV shows when he first got to Hollywood．Instead, he worked as a lowly production assistant．Not what you would expect from a Princeton graduate．Howeven, it all paid of for Miller in the end．

　　My frieads and I went out for supper that night．As it was rather cold, I decided to wrap Tyler in a blanket and carry him in that way．When I walked into the restaurant, I noticed some very strange looks and quite a few raised eyebrows．My friends and I decided to make a game out of the whole situation．I stood in the Gorner pretending to rock Tyler to while my friends kept looking into the blanket and said,“Oh, how lovely．”I could not but laugh．And although it was funny to my friends and nme, some of the people did think it was so funy that I had a baby．I overheard one couple say,“Why would she she g a baby here?”These people were giving me rude looks and forming judgments about because they thought I was a teenage mom．Others just smiled at me pathetically(同情地)and felt sorry for me because I was only a child with a chiId．ing our meal, my friends and I received strange looks from the others in the restaurant．S so glad to finally go home．

　　I learned a lot through my experience with the“Think-It-Over”baby．The doll ly strengthened my thinking I was not ready to be a parent, but it also made me e aware of the larger picture．It opened my eyes to the judgments people make about rs．People do not realize that some things are not the way they seem．I was only ying it around for a class project．The people in the restaurant were so quick to judge because they thought I was a teenage mom．I sometimes catch myself judging people I not know, just because of the first impression they give．In reality, I have no idea about real stories．We should all be slower to judge others, and realize that some things are as they seem．

　　There are two basic ways to see growth：one as a product,the other as a process．People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外在的)result or a product that can easily be identified and measured．The worker who gets a rise,the student whose grades improve,the foreigner who learns a new language－all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts．

　　By contrast,the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine,since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way．The process is not the road itself,but the attitudes,feelings people have,and their caution or courage,as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties．In this process,the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world,new ideas to try,new challenges to accept．

　　In order to grow,to travel new roads,people need to have a willingness to take risks,to face the unknown,and to accept the possibility that they may“fail”at first．How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow．Do we see ourselves as quick and curious?If so,we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences．Do we think we're shy and indecisive?Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate,to move slowly,and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we're not smart enough to deal with a new challenge．Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all．

　　These feelings of insecurity and self?doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow．If we protect ourselves too much,then we stop growing．We become trapped inside a shell of our own making．

　　History is a society's memory and forms part of people's identity(身份)．But Taiwan's government has proposed(提议)a change to their history．In the move their textbooks will separate the island's history from the rest of China．

　　By disconnecting the island's history from the mainland, the government hopes to create a stronger Taiwan identity．

　　Under new guidelines(方针)to be carried out in 2006, Taiwan has ordered high schools to change textbooks to create one book of Taiwan's history．At the moment their books cover the complete Chinese history．But following the new move Chinese history will be taught as part of international history．No longer to be included as part of Taiwan's history is the founding of the Republic of China(ROC)in 1911 by Sun Yat-sen．This event will be in the new international history book．

　　“It is a political attempt by Taiwan's leader Chen Shui-bian to make their education support Taiwan's independence”, said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council．

　　This move has also received great opposition(反对)in Taiwan's schools．“The new outline(大纲)is too political and facts have been changed,”said Yu Lin, the headmaster of Taipei Middle School．“It will confuse students' understanding of history．”

　　“Who on earth should I think is the founding father of the ROC?”asked a student in Taipei．“Many famous people in history like Confucius(孔子)or Sun Yat-sen, who was considered 'father of the ROC' for more than half a century, should now be thought of as foreigners based upon this ridiculous logic．'' he said．

　　Many people have shown opposition to the move．“History cannot be changed．Mixing politics with our history means forgetting our ancestors,”said Lien Chan, chairman of Kuomintang Party．“It will not do any good for the Taiwanese and only worsen cross-Straits relations．”

　　Be careful what you say around your dog．It might understand more than you think．

　　A border collie(苏格兰牧羊犬)named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany．The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child．Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩)．

　　In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects．Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back．In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right．As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words．

　　In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew．The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before．

　　The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法)．A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive．

　　Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog．For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed(品种)known for its mental abilities．In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months．

　　It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say．Even if they do, they can't talk back．Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then．You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!

　　You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving．If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs,then it's likely you will burn out , or feel upset．When you take and take without giving anything back ,you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life．

　　The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values．I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values．Your being values are the character traits of the ideal person you would like to be．I suggest to my clients that they choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment to live by．An example of some being values are：kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful．By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model．Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose．

　　Your having values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy．These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security．This is what you receive．You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life．

　　When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary ones．If your usual pattern is to talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person．A calm person might go for a walk ,meditate(沉思), or set a time limit before responding．If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person．In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be－this is the key to personal power．

　　When you choose to act on your values , you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce(加强)your chosen beliefs．Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you．

　　Millions of people visit Yosemite National Park every year to see the tall waterfalls and mountains．Thee mountains are a splendid sight when viewed from the valley floor．Lots of stores, hotels, and restaurants are needed to handle the crowds．Also, water, roads, and other service systems are part of the infrastructure(基础设施)that must be maintained．

　　Unfortunately, these systems are starting to break down．It's not just in Yosemite but in national parks around the nation．

　　Yosemite is thirty years old according to Dennis Galvin, a National Park Service worker．The park is not only old but worn out．Two or three times as many visitors come every year．That is too many visitors for the parks to deal with．

　　Four years ago a storm washed out a water pipeline in the Grand Canyon．The National Park service had to send water trucks to provide water for the visitors．Last month pipes almost broke again and roads had to be closed for a while．

　　Why hasn't the National Park Service kept up the park repairs?There is a lack of money．The United States has 378 monuments, parks, and wilderness areas．Between three and four billion dollars are needs for repairs．

　　Yosemite is one national park that does have money for repairs．It has two hundred million dollars but cannot spend it any way it chooses．When the park workers started widening the road, they were forced to stop by the Sierra Club．The club claimed that the road work was damaging the Merced River that runs through the park．

　　A sierra Club lawyer, Julia Olson, feels that the infrastructure needs to be moved out of Yosemite．That way less pressure will be put on the already crowded park．
