　　Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation．An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight．A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice．But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude．

　　Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways．They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake．They can result from the individual's experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them, and frequently, they are learned by copying other people's behavior, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents．Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正)of attitudes．

　　More digging found shards, or pieces of popery from ancient Rome, Greece, China, Egypt and Syria．Diggers and scientists agree that people were here for about 5000 years, Clapp and his team were excited水they continued to discover more pieces of the past that seemed to prove that it was the lost city of Ubar．

　　“We started with this hopeless myth,”says Clapp, “and then finally found the truth behind the myth．”But is this unearthed site really the once-great Ubar? Experts aren't totally persuaded．

　　Donald Whitcomb is an archeologist(考古学家)at the University of Chicago．He doubts that Clapp really discovered Ubar．“There's probably some truth to this myth,”he says．“But Ubar is described as a place, with walls all made of gold, and the rubies and emeralds(宝石)．”No gold or precious stones have been found by Clapp．

　　The medical world is slowly realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play all important role in helping patients to recover．

　　As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the museums and into public places, some of the country's best artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard, modem buildings．Of the 2 500 national health service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have collections of art in passages, waiting areas and treatment rooms．

　　These recent movements were first started by one artist．Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1 970's．He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by more people．

　　A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5 000 visitors each week．What a good place to hold exhibitions of art! Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975．Believed to be Britain's first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates．

　　The effect is amazing．Now in the passages and waiting rooms the visitors experience a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyards．

　　The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness．A study has shown that a patient who had a view onto gardens needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at．

　　One of the greatest stories of rags(贫穷)to riches success is that of Andrew Carnegie, who started life in poverty but became the richest man in the world．

　　Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1837, the son of a weaver．In 1848, the family moved to the United States and at 13 Carnegie began work in a cotton mill, earning ＄1.5 per week．About three years later, he found a better job as a telegraph messenger boy．At work, his superiors(上级)were impressed by his abilities and willingness to work hard．In 1853, he gained an office job at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company．This was his first big break．He continued to impress and rose rapidly through the company, gaining more and more responsibility．At the same time, Carnegie loved reading very much and made use of every opportunity to visit the library．He read widely on all subjects, particularly literature．

　　Carnegie now began to save a little money and, with the help of his employer, began to make some successful investments．He invested in the iron industry and eventually set up in business himself, owning several iron and steel plants．This was where he made his fortune．By the 1890s, the Carnegie Steel Company was the biggest and most profitable business in the world．

　　Carnegie had always believed that the pursuit(追求)of wealth was never an end in itself．In his view, successful, wealthy people should re-distribute their wealth for the benefit of everyone in society．True to his word, in 1901, at the age of 66, he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity work．(奉献于慈善工作)．

　　Carnegie's lack of formal education and his poor family background clearly didn't put barriers in the way of success．His rapid rise from poverty to wealth was due to his willingness to work hard, his intelligence and good business sense, and his talent for making things happen．He died in 1919 at the age of 83．

　　One night I was sitting in my room half-listening as my 15 year-old brother fought with my 12 year-old brother Kevin．I didn't pay attention when Kevin rushed up the stairs with the hurt on his face．

　　About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom．I knocked on the door and asked, “Hi, Kevin, do you want to talk?”

　　No response(无应答)．I tried again, “Why don't you come out of there?”

　　Again, no response．

　　So, joking around, I grabbed a stack of index cards and a pencil and wrote, “If you don't want to talk, we can write notes to each other．”

　　An hour later I was still sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with two stacks of index cards in front of me．One was blank and one was cars from Kevin on which he had translated all his yucky feelings into words for me．As I read one of Kevin's notes, tears came to my eyes．It said, “Nobody in this family cares about me．I'm not the youngest, and I'm not the oldest, and I'm not talented．Tommy thinks I'm stupid and Dad wishes he had the other Kevin as a kid because he's better at basketball．And you're never around to even notice me．”

　　Tears came to my eyes again as I wrote back to him．“You know Kevin, I really do love you and I'm sorry I don't always show it．I am here for you and you are loved in this family．”

　　There was no response for a while, but then I heard a tearing sound coming from inside the bathroom．Kevin, who had run out of index cards wrote on a torn-up paper cup, “Thanks．”

　　I wrote back “For what?” It returned to me with “Loving me” written on it．Since then, I try my best never to half-notice my family members anymore．Kevin and I have closer relationship now, and sometimes when one of us notices that the other is upset we'll smile and say “Write it on a paper cup．”
