　　Beijing(Oct．15)－China is going green．In order to reduce air pollution and oil shortages, carmakers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles(混合燃料汽车)for the Chinese market．

　　The first China made Toyota's hybrid car Prius hit the road last week．Let's have a look at the new car．

　　Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power．Hybrid cars use an electric motor with rechargeable batteries(充电电池)and a gasoline engine．

　　A hybrid car has a smaller than traditional gasoline engine and an electric motor．The gasoline engine provides 99 per cent of the power when the car is cruising(匀速行车)．

　　The electric motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration(加速度)is needed．

　　Step into a Prius, and turn on the power．The first thing you notice is that it is quieter than a traditional car．At this point, the car's gasoline engine is dormant．The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 km/h．If you stay at low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no exhaust gas given off．

　　An onboard computer decides when to use the gasoline engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two．If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas pedal(油门), you are telling the computer how fast you want to go．

　　The electric motor recharges automatically(自动的)when braking．And when driving at certain speeds, the gasoline engine not only powers the car but also recharges the batteries．

　　When you use the brake, the electric motor acts like a generator(发电机)to produce electricity to recharge the batteries．Batteries will last for around 200,000 miles．

　　In our life, we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who lived those years with us．In fact, we don't have to wait for anniversaries(周年纪念日)to thank the ones closest to us and the ones so easily overlooked．If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this：give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it．Saying thanks is such an easy way to add to the world's happiness．

　　Saying thanks not only brightens someone else's world, it brightens yours．If you're feeling left out, unloved or unappreciated, try reaching out to others．It may be just the medicine you need．Of course, there are times when you can't express gratitude immediately．In that case, don't let embarrassment sink you into silence and speak up the first time you have the chance．

　　Once a young minister, Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish(教区)of Kwakiutl Indians in British Columbia．The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for thank you．But Brian soon found that these people had unusual generosity．Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness．They do their thanks．I wonder if we had no words in our vocabulary for thank you, would we do a better job of communicating our gratitude? Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?

　　Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that transforms people all around us －including ourselves．For no one ever misunderstands the melody(旋律)of a grateful heart．Its message is universal; its poems transcend(超越)all earthly barriers; its music touches the heaven．

　　It is possible to do many simple tricks with numbers．Here is one trick．It has seven steps．

　　First, write down your house number．For example, if your address is 73 Lemon Street, you would write down 73．

　　Next, double it．In other words, multiply(乘)it by two．Then, add five to this doubled number．For example, if your address was 73 and you doubled it, you would get 146．Then, if you added five, you’d get 151．

　　So, to repeat the first three steps, write down your house number, double it, and add five．

　　Fourth, multiply this number by 50．In our example here, if you multiply 151 by 50, you’ll get 7550．

　　The fifth step is to add your age to this total．For example, if you’re 26 years old, you should add 26 to this total．In our example here, the result would be 7550 plus 26, you’ll get 7576．

　　Sixth, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365．In our example here, 365 added to 7576 is 7941．

　　The seventh and final step is this：subtract(减)615 from the number that you have．In our example, 7941 minus 615 is 7326．

　　The result here, 7-3-2-6, is the trick．The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the number is the age of the person．That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 26 is the age that we used．

　　If you follow these seven steps with any address and the age of any person．You will get the same result．

　　When a new Harry Potter book hits the shelves, kids aren’t the only people who are happy．Doctors are happy, too．

　　Doctors in England recently reported that when the last two Harry Potter books came out, the number of kids in the hospital emergency room(急诊室)fell．

　　Dr．Stephen Gwilym studied the number of kids aged from 5 to 15 who were in the hospital emergency room after the latest Harty Potter books came out．They focused on two weekends：after Order of the Phoenix came out in 2003 and after Half-Blood Prince arrived in stores in the end of 2004．

　　During the non-Harry Potter weekends, an average(平均)of 67.4 children visited the emergency room．On Harry Potter weekends, that number was 36.5．

　　Kids were so interested in the books that they would not go outside to play those weekends．Once Dr Stephen Gwilym saw a child sitting peacefully for hours while reading Harry Potter．

　　“Please, sir．” begged the innkeeper, “Don’t kill us!we meant nothing!” The soldiers moved back．The innkeeper saw them raising their guns．Then Napoleon called：“Ready!Aim!” The wife screamed．“Stop!” said Napoleon．He went to the innkeeper, “Now, you know the answer to the question you asked me just now, don’t you?”

　　No two people are the same．Sometimes friends don't get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other．Most of the time they will go on being friends．Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad．We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them．Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends．It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them．Families sometimes name their children after a close friend．Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town．Some libraries are named this way．So are some schools．We think of these people when we go to these places．

　　There's more good news for people, if they have friends．These people live longer than those people if those don't have friends．Why?It could be that they are happier．Being happy helps you stay well．Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself．

　　Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the greatest resources of the English language．Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand words!There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it．Such a study is well worth the effort, even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day．

　　However, it is surprising that we should know comparatively little about the life of the greatest English writer．We know that Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, and that he died there in 1616．He almost certainly attended the Grammar School in the town, but of this we cannot be sure．We know he was married there in 1582 to Anne Hathaway and that he had three children．We know that he spent much of his life in London writing his great works．But this is almost all that we do know．

　　However, what is important about Shakespeare’s life is not its other less important details but its products, the plays and the poems．For many years scholars have been trying to add a few facts about Shakespeare’s life to the small number we already possess and for an equally long time critics(评论家)have been talking about the plays．Sometimes, indeed, it seems that the poetry of Shakespeare will disappear under the great mass of comment(评论)that has been written upon it．

　　Luckily this is not likely to happen．Shakespeare’s people have long delighted not just the English but lovers of literature everywhere, and will continue to do so after the scholars and critics and all their works have been forgotten．

　　The South China tiger could become extinct within 30 to 50 years if it does not receive protection．There are only 20 to 30 South China tigers in their earliest natural places, with Guangdong Province having only five left because forests are being destroyed as a result of rapid industrial growth．

　　The South China tiger can live 20 to 25 years, but the survival rate for the young is becoming lower as a result of rapid growth in industry and tourism．Even with hard work, it is hoped that the number of South China tigers can only reach 150 to 180 in the coming century．
