　　It doesn’t matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive．That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about AI Herpin．AI Herpin, it was said, never slept, Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves．

　　AI Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey．They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind．So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made．But they were surprised．Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping, In fact, he did not even own a bed．He never needed one．

　　The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers．The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness．They found only one answer that might explain his condition．Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born．But that was all．Was this the real reason? No one could be sure．

　　Herpin died at the age of 94．

Luckily, the woman came downstairs, she'd gone to sleep and forgotten about me and the dog．I was in such a hurry to get away that I forgot to ask her for the fare(车费)．”

　　Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old．Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life．

　　Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment．They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes．A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver．This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings．

　　One study shows that babies can learn before they are born．The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant(怀孕的)woman．Then, they played a recording of a short story．On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother．They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby．

　　The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way．If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story．The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born．They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again．

　　Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children．

　　Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years．The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity(敏感)of the mothers．The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children's activities and did not interfere(干扰)unnecessarily．They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old．Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression．

　　The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression．The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear．

　　These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people．The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children．Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression．

　　When someone says “Well, I guess I'll have to face the music”, it doesn't mean that he is planning to go to hear a singer．It is something far less happy, as you are called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that or why you did not do this or that．

　　At sometime or another, every one of us has to “face the music”, especially as children．We can all remember father's angry word “I want to talk to you”．And it was only because we did not listen to him．What a bad thing it was!

　　In the middle or at the end of every term, we students have to “face the music”．The result of the exam will decide whether we will face the music or not．If－that means parents' cold faces and contempt(鄙视)of the teachers and classmates．

　　“To face the music” is well known to every American, young or old．It is at least 100 years old．It really means that you have to do something, no matter how terrible the whole thing might be, because you know you have no choice．

　　Shortly before 1800, half a million Americans were living west of the Allegheny Mountains．The settlers in the towns and villages there needed trade．In order to get trade, they had to send their flour, tobacco, and whisky by water．There were no usable roads to the eastern cities and ports．The entire Mississippi, except its mouth at New Orleans, was open to the settlers．Spain owned New Orleans and the great Louisiana Territory to the west of the river．The western settlers solved their problem by getting the “right of deposit” from Spain．This gave the settlers the right to unload goods at New Orleans and put it in warehouses before shipping it to the east．

　　It's interesting that the arrival of snow has a different effect on people in different countries．For some countries it is an important happening to celebrate each year, while for others it is a catastrophe(灾难)．

　　There are countries between these two extremes that normally expect snow some time over the winter months, but never receive snow regularly or in the same quantities every year．Britain is one such country, for which the arrival of snow quite simply creates problems．Within hours of the first snowfall, however light, roads are blocked, trains and buses stop in the middle of traffic．Normal communications are affected as well, telephone calls become difficult and the post immediately takes more time than usual．Almost within hours, there are also shortages(缺乏)-bread, vegetables and other things－not because all these things can no longer be produced or sent to shops, but mainly because people are frightened, and go out to store up these commodities, “just for fear that something bad should happen．”

　　Why then does snow have this effect?After all, the Swiss, Austrians and Canadians don't have such problems．It is simply because there is not enough plan and preparation．We need money to buy equipment to deal with snow and ice．To keep the roads clear, for example, requires snow ploughs and machines to spread salt．The reason why a country like Britain does not buy some ploughs is that they are only used for a few days in any one year, and the money could be more useful in other things such as hospital education or helping the old．

　　Oh, poor digestion can lead to weight problems．Here's how：When a person feels stressed, the part of the central nervous system that connects digestion switches off．This is called the parasympathetic nervous system(副交感神经系统)．At those times of stress, the body can take in food and process some of it, but digestion doesn't work correctly to digest all the nutritional(营养的)goodness from the food．Poor digestion is not always obvious by observing symptoms; you can get some illnesses but not always．Poor digestion can be seemingly silent．

　　If you eat when you are stressed, anxious, or nervous, you might as well be eating cardboard for all the nutrients your body gets．Yes, eating when stressed is a gaining situation．Now you might think, well, if I'm not digesting, the calories aren't getting handles, so I should be losing weight．Good idea, but wrong reality．When digestion is not proper, the body starts “starving” from lack of necessary nutrients(营养物)．Yes, it goes into a starvation(饥饿)problem and starts absorbing(吸收)fat and energy．It thinks it's in a famine(饥荒)．The good news is that it's easy to make some corrections and get rid of stress at mealtimes．

　　If you feel stressed often, it can be helpful to take other food that contains multiple B vitamins．These help, but you could still find yourself stressed at mealtimes．

　　Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself．Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself．Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky．Sure we all know that we're the apple of our parent's eyes, and that our Grandmas think we're great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics．But sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves．If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge．It is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself．

　　Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself．This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think．Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us．Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be．Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world．

　　The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes．That is , make a list of you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day．Don't allow doubts to occur in it．

　　It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself．Well , roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task．If you think you're silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor．If you think you're weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice．If you think you're dull because you think it doesn't mean it's true．

　　The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities．Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image．When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you'll know you're well on your way．Good luck!
