　　“Well, we’re in our new house．Let’s get a new pet to get along with it,” Mrs．Brown said to her husband．

　　“That sounds like a pretty good idea,” he answered．“Do you want to see the ads in the newspaper?”

　　“Let’s go to the animal shelter．Many pets there need homes．Since tomorrow is Saturday, we can both go,” she said．

　　Next morning the Browns met Mr．Snow at the animal shelter．“We want to be sure that the pets here go to good homes,” Mr．Snow said, “So I need to ask you some questions．”

　　After they talked for a while, the Browns decided to get a small dog．It wouldn’t need a big house or a big yard．A small dog would bark(吠)and warn them if someone tried to break into their house．After Mr．Snow gave the Browns a book on pet care, they chose one and wanted to take her home right away．But the animal doctor hadn’t checked her yet．So Mr．Snow told them to return on Sunday．

　　On Sunday afternoon the Browns went to the animal shelter．The animal doctor said, “Shadow has had all of her shots(预防针)．She will be healthy．” The Browns thanked the doctor and took Shadow home．

　　An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother．All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money．Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money．

　　She hurried to a drugstore(药店)with the money in her hand．

　　“And what do you want?” asked the salesman．“It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered．“He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle．” “Pardon?” said the salesman．

　　“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him．So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child．I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile．

　　“Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more．Just tell me how much it costs．”

　　A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

　　“I don’t know，” she answered with her eyes full of tears．“ He’s really sick and mum says he needs an operation．But my daddy can’t pay for it, so I have brought all my money．”

　　“How much do you have?” asked the man．“＄1.11, but I can try and get some more,” she answered．

　　“Well, what luck,” smiled the man．“＄1.11, the price of a miracle for little brothers．”

　　He took up the girl’s hand and said, “Take me to where you live．I want to see your brother and meet your parents．Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need．”

　　That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor．The operation was successful and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again．

　　Are you a football fan(迷)？The World Cup makes more and more people interested in football Teenagers like playing and watching football．Many of them love some football stars so much that they get the pictures of their favourite players on the walls of their rooms．That is the way to show their love for the World Cup as children in Japan．

　　As a boy, Sanders was much influenced(影响)by books about the sea, but by the age of fifteen he had decided to become a doctor rather than a sailor．His father was a doctor．So he was often with the doctors and got along very well with them．When he was fourteen, he was already hanging around the hospital where he was supposed to be helping to clean the medicine bottles, but was trying to listen to the doctors’ conversations with patients in the next room．

　　During the war Sanders served in the army as a surgeon(外科医生)．“That was the happiest time of my life．I was dealing with real sufferers and on the whole making a success of my job．” In Rhodes he taught the country people simple facts about medicine．He saw himself as a life-saver．He had proved his skill to himself and had a firm belief that he could serve those who lived simply, and were dependent upon him．Thus, while in a position to tell them what to do he could feel he was serving them．

　　After the war, he married and set up a practice deep in the English countryside, working under an old doctor who hated the sight of blood．This gave the younger man plenty of opportunity(机会)to go on working as a life-saver．

　　On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin．The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man．

　　The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully．Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat．Then he began to play the violin．It sounded more pleasant than ever．Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper．It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake．Please come to claim(认领)it soon．”

　　After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, “Yes, it’s you．I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here．” The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr George Sang?” The man nodded．The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?” “It’s a lottery ticket(彩票),” said the man．The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen．“Is it?” he asked．George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist．

　　The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna．Later his classmate asked the violinist, “At that time you needed money to pay the tuition and you had to play the violin in the railway station every day to make money．Why didn’t you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?”

　　The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily．But if I lose honesty I won’t be happy forever．” Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much．But being honest should always be with us．

　　To be a good reporter, you need to be able to read, write, speak and listen effectively．You also need to be able to ask good questions．So making your communication skills the best they can be is quite important if you want to he a good reporter．Keep a notebook or a journal, and remember to practice noting down what happens, whenever and wherever it happens．

　　In addition, you should obey the following rules．Strive for accuracy．When an issue is debatable, do your best to cover both sides．Don't assume things, and never make up details; reporters are supposed to seek and report the facts．Lying, making up stories or quotes, or misquoting someone will damage your credibility(信誉)．

　　Avoid expressing personal opinions．As a reporter your job is to report the facts so that others can form their own opinions．Make sure you present all the important details without twisting them to your own viewpoint．

　　Generally, a story starts with who, what, where, when, why and how．Build details from there, beginning with the most important information and ending with the least important．By including the most important information first, you allow your editor to cut the back of the story if it runs too long．Seek out stories you find interesting．You can report on current events, or you can do feature stories, which are usually of a more general interest．

　　Carry a camera and a tape recorder so that you have them on hand whenever you need them．Be prepared to turn over your notes．Your news publisher may want to check your information before publishing it．

　　When we grow older, we feel like children again and we need more friends and true friendship．If we are lucky enough to keep our childhood friendships to this age, then that is wonderful．Otherwise, we have to find new friends again to have a wonderful life．
