　　In 1952, on the island of Koshima(越谷，日本某地), scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand．The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant．An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream．She taught this trick to her mother．Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too．This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists．

　　Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable(美味的)．Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement．Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes．

　　Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes．Let’s further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes．Then it happened．By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them．The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

　　But notice：A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama(高岐山)began washing their sweet potatoes．Thus, when a certain critical(关键的)number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind．Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon(现象)means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property(个人意识性属性)of those people．

　　But there is a point at which if only one more person comes to a new awareness, a field(能量场)is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

　　A soldier named John Blanchard struck up(建立)a pen pal friendship with a woman, Sally Maynell, who he had never met in the months before World War II．When the fighting began, their correspondence still continued．

　　Over the next year or so the two got to know each other through their letters．Even so, when Blanchard asked for a photograph, the woman refused．She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like．

　　When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting－7∶00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York．“You’ll recognise me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my suit．”

　　At the station a beautiful young woman approached him．She was wearing a green suit and was everything that he hoped Miss Maynell would be．But there was no red rose．There was another woman．She was well past 40 and had her hair tucked(塞)under a worn hat．She was more than plump, her fat feet thrust(挤)into shoes．Her pale face was gentle and her gray eyes had a warm twinkle(闪光)．On her coat, there was a red rose．

　　He did not hesitate．His fingers gripped the small worn copy of the book that was to identify him to her．“This will not be love, but it will be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a feeling for which I have been and must ever be grateful．” he thought．

　　“I’m John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell．I am so glad you could meet me．May I take you to dinner?” he asked．

　　The woman’s face broadened into a smile．“I don’t know what this is about, son．” she answered, “But the young lady in the green suit who just went by begged me to wear this rose on my coat．And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street．She said it was a kind of test!”

　　The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina, Minnesota．People loved doing all their shopping in one place．More malls were built all over the country．Now, malls are like town centres where people come to do many things．They shop, of course．They also eat in food houses that have food from all over the world．They see movies at theatres．Some people even get their daily exercise by doing the new sport of mall walking．Others go to malls to meet friends．

　　In some malls, people can see a doctor or a dentist and even attend church．In other words, people can do just about everything in malls．Now residents can actually live in their favourite shopping centre．

　　The personal computer has overtaken the family dog as man’s best friend, according to a study．

　　Researchers found that just 6 per cent of us believe that “most people rely more on their dog than they do on their PC”, while 67 per cent think the opposite to be true．

　　Even 38 per cent of dog owners admitted to relying more on their PC than on their dog, although 36 per cent disagreed．

　　And 71 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old dog owners said they relied more on their computer．

　　Paul Allen, editor of Computeractive magazine said：“These days you can even take your PC for a walk, provided you have a laptop or tablet．”

　　“It’s only a matter of time until the first PC that fetches your slippers．”

　　Researchers questioned 2,000 British adults to find out about the change modern technology has brought to their home life．

　　They found that male dog owners are almost twice as likely as female owners to rely on their computer than a canine companion．

　　Mr．Allen said：“With broadband bringing them global news and newspaper sales falling, the family dog even misses out on the pleasure of taking the paper to his owner．”

　　But it’s not all bad news for obedient dogs．

　　“The family PC has given dog owners access to a wealth of resources and information that can help with the long-term care that a dog needs,” Mr．Allen said．

　　Sitting is an art that isn’t getting passed along．People these days feel as though they have to be doing something．If they’re not working, they’re running slowly, or playing tennis or golf, or taking course to improve their minds and bodies－or they’re parked in front of the TV．Sitting in front of the TV isn’t sitting－it’s watching．

　　People used to sit a whole lot．You’d walk down the street or drive down the road, and there they’d be, out of the porch(有顶的入口处、门廊), sitting．You could go down to the store and sit on the bench in front in the summer or around the potbellied stove in the winter．There were sitting on benches out on the courthouse lawn(草坪)．At the garage there were straight-backed chairs．There among the oil cans and windshield-wiper blades, you could kick back and sit．

　　Houses used to have sitting rooms, where the grownups would go after Sunday dinner．Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Aunt Ruby would sit and digest the fried chicken and talked about Aunt Ethel’s gallstones, and how good the preacher did today．Outside, the children would play, and the afternoon would drift by in a comfortable haze(烟雾)．

　　That sort of thing looks like doing nothing．A recharging battery doesn’t look as if it’s doing anything either．Sitting restores your soul．If you want to enjoy a truly full life, don’t just do something－Sit there．

　　Fight fair．Family disagreements are unavoidable．When temperatures rise, keep your mouth respectful and cool off before you let out a large amount of negative words．Talk it out when you can do so calmly．

　　Realize respect．Face it：Your dad’s been given authority(权威)to help guide you as you know．He’s going to make mistakes, but so are you．Forgive him when he blows it, and honor his decisions－even if you don’t agree．

　　SLIP－on shoes with elastic(弹性的)sides are particularly popular among teenage boys－with Keds and Vans the most popular brands．

　　The main problem is that they are just too flat－so flat that the heel, which strikes the ground first, also becomes damaged and painful．

　　BALLET PUMPS

　　The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes．The problem is partly their flat-pumps, which have no string or heel, have other specific problems．

　　“As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on toes to keep the shoe on, causing an awkward gait(步法)， this lead to short- and long-term problem such as calluses(茧子), heel and knee pain．”

　　WEDGES AND STILETTOS

　　These shoes can also cause problems with gait．They may look good, but the heels on these are so high they can force the wearer’s body weight forward, making them very unstable．

　　Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of women with constant back pain．

　　SCHOOL SHOES

　　So what do podiatrists(足科医生)have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear? Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that does not press the toes, such as Clark’s Marks & Spencer of Rhino．

　　If your teen insists on wearing “bad” shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics(矫形器)in the shoes．These support and correct movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrists, can often transform their walk and halt the damage．

　　Nature is full of colors, from rainbows and roses to butterfly wings and peacock tails．Even the fruits and vegetables you eat have different colors：blue blueberries, red strawberries, green broccoli, and orange carrots．

　　Plants and animals often use colors to attract attention．The substances(物质)responsible for these colors belong to a class of chemicals called antioxidants(抗氧化剂)．Plants make antioxidants to protect themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet(UV)light．

　　Ultraviolet light causes chemicals called free radicals(自由基)to form within plant cells．They can destroy parts of the plant．Free radicals also have damaging effects on human beings．Some of these effects like wrinkled skin can be seen．The damage is caused by the free radicals attacking cells in our bodies．Certain cancers and heart disease are linked to free radicals．

　　Our bodies have natural defences for fighting off free radicals．While we’re young, our defences are pretty strong．However, they get weaker as we get older．The body’s built in defences can only go so far without extra help．

　　The key to fighting free radicals with fruits and vegetables is to mix and match colors．It’s like sunscreen(防晒霜)for the inside of your body．Go for a range of very bright colors．Colorful foods contain hundreds of healthy chemicals not found anywhere else．

　　Research into how chemicals in blueberries affect the brain’s function in rats suggests that these chemicals may help our own brains work more efficiently．

　　Don’t just blame the sun．Ultraviolet light isn’t the only source of free radicals．If you breathe polluted air, such as smog, automobile exhaust(废气), or wasted gas from a factory, you take in chemicals that also cause such damage．And, the body itself produces free radicals as it processes food．
