The year is 2094.It has been announced that a comet(彗星)is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.

On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion.About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed.Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour.Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina.Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes.Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long.Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero.Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years.Wars break out as countries fight for food.A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Xiangzi-Lucky, in English-is appropriately named. His owner Qiu Hong, a sports marketer, lets the dog enjoy two daily walks, a collection of imported American toys, $300 worth of monthly food and treats and his own sofa in her high-rise apartment. When Ms.Qiu feels bored, she takes Xiangzi out for a long run in her car.

In a sense, Xiangzi is not just a dog, but a social phenomenon-and, perhaps, a marker of how quickly the Chinese nation is booming through its transformation from poor farmer to first-world citizen.Twenty years ago, there were hardly any dogs in Beijing, but now there’re 900, 000 registered dogs with countless thousands of others unlicensed. How this came to be is, in some ways, the story of modern China as well.

“People used to be focused on improving their own lives, and they weren't really acquainted with raising dogs,” said Ms.Qiu.“But with the improvement in the economy, people's outlooks(观念)have changed.”

Having a dog can be a way to relieve the stress in people's lives, but mostly Beijing dogs have, as in the West, become objects of affection-even devotion-by their owners. It's easy to find dog-treat stores, dog Web sites, dog social networks, dog swimming pools-even, for a time recently, a bring-your-dog cinema and a bring-your-dog bar on Beijing's downtown nightclub row.

The doglike devotion of pet owners here seems to have softened the city government heart. In 1994, Beijing officials relaxed their no-dog policy to“severely restrict” dogs.In 2003, it was changed again to allow anyone to own a dog, but to limit city dogs to no more than 35 centimeters in height. And nowadays the restriction seems to be loosely carried out.

As for stirfried Pekingese(京叭狗)-well, that dog, too, may have seen its day.A formal suggestion to ban the eating of dogs has been made by a law professor named Chang Jiwen, who considered himself“not so much a dog lover as a China lover”.“With China developing so quickly, more people should know how to treat animals properly,” he said in a telephone interview.

The oldest forms of medicine are enjoying a comeback.Modern holistic(整体的)medicine is an approach that treats the whole patient, not just the disease. It is a way to maintain good health rather than cure illness. The most important influences on today's holistic medicine are ancient Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, both of which promoted whole body health.

Holistic medicine usually combines diet, physical exercise and meditation, together with other alternative techniques such as massage(按摩)and acupuncture(针灸).Herbal treatment, a practice of treating illness by using plants, is influenced by the writings of Culpeper as well as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.Homeopathy(顺势疗法)is one of the forms of holistic medicine which is widely practiced in Europe and the USA.Homeopathy began in Germany in the early 1800s, when Samuel Hahnemann described how very tiny doses(剂量)of a drug had an effect on his patients.According to Hahnemann, the more the drug was diluted(稀释), the stronger its effects. The substance selected would produce similar effects to the disease itself if given in large doses. In the UK homeopathy is regarded as a non-traditional but just about acceptable treatment.

Meditation and contemplation have an important role in holistic medicine. They were brought to Europe by Indian teachers who combined Indian Ayurvedic medicine with Western beliefs.Transcendental meditation(超脱静坐)is one of the best known of these techniques.People repeat words inside their head to reach a state of deep relaxation.

The holistic movement has made many doctors look at the whole patient, not just the disease.Life-style, emotional problems and diet are just some of the factors that can affect a person's health.Holistic medicine emphasizes good diet, exercise and fresh air, all of which contribute to health. Some clinics now offer holistic medicine along with traditional treatments, so that their patients can choose a combination of treatments that suits them. One problem with holistic medicine is that it is difficult for people to be sure a doctor is reliable. To solve this, many countries want alternative doctors to form professional bodies.

“There is an out-of-date idea that children grow up and leave home when they're 18, and the truth is far from that,” says Mr.Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin, Today unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents.“There is a great change in the middle class,” declares Allan Schnaiberg of Northwestern University, whose son, 19, moved back in after an absence of eight months.

Scientists show a number of reasons for this return to the nest. The marriage age is rising, a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people.A high divorce(离婚)rate and a low remarriage rate make some differences. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so great that many students now attend local schools.Even after graduation, young people find their wings tied by terrible housing costs.

Living at home, says Knighton, a school teacher, continues to give security(安全保卫)and moral(道义的)support. Her mother agreed.“It's strange for the kids to pay all that money for rent.It makes sense for kids to stay at home.” But sharing the family home requires changes for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy, Some families, however, manage the careful balancing act.But for others, it proves too difficult.Michelle Del Turco, 24, has been home three times and left three times.“What I considered a social drink, my dad considered an alcohol(酒精)problem,” she explains.“He never liked anyone I dated, so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends' houses.”

Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on? Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archaeologists says.In a letter addressed to the justice secretary.Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their "deep and widespread concern" about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age.The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.

"Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice," they write.

The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC.Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground.

The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago.If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was.Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed.

Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said:"Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer."

The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.
