　　Five people are at our table, including myself．I've already learnt a great deal about them in the short time we've been at sea, although we rarely meet except at mealtimes．

　　First of all, there's Dr Stone．He's a man．of about sixty - five, with gray hair and a friendly face．He gave up his work a short while ago and is now traveling round the world before he retires to some quiet country village．As a young man, he served for many years as a doctor in the Army and visited many countries．He's told us a great deal about the city to which we are going．

　　Then there's a man I don't care for very much, an engineer by the name of Barlow．He has been on leave in England and is now returning to his work in Singapore．

　　The other person who sits at our table is Mrs．Hunt．I've found out hardly anything about her．She's extremely quiet and rarely talks, except to consult the doctor about children's various illnesses．She's on her way to join her husband in India．

　　Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team " Football, tennis, cricket - anything with a round ball．I was useless," he says now with a laugh．But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England．

　　It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him．At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest．Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend．Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength．At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon．

　　The following year, he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway's cold－water exploits．Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future．

　　In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long - distance expedition towards the North Pole．It took unbelievable energy．He suffered frostbite(冻疮),ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply -loaded sled(雪橇)up and over rocky ice．Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900 - kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis．

　　The Chinese Antarctica expedition returned to Shanghai last Friday following a month living on the ice．It was the First time Chinese scientists had visited the Amery Ice Shelf?the longest ice shelf in the world．The team collected ice samples and data on temperatures, which are necessary for research on global warming．So far, about 27 countries have visited Antarctica for scientific research．Although the living conditions are very hard, many scientists have to stay there for long periods of time．So, how do they manage their lives on the ice?

　　During the summer, the temperature in Antarctica reaches about －20℃．It falls to about －60℃ in winter．So, even if there are 24 hours of sunshine, scientists must keep wearing all the correct clothes to protect them from the cold．These clothes include jeans, running shoes, jackets, long underwear, boots and woolen socks．Although highly technical clothing provides much protection against the extreme cold, scientists often need to go outside when there is an icy wind blowing and the temperature is －30℃．Natural protection such as facial hair can also help．"That's why many researchers wear a beard．It really does keep you warm, " says German explorer Arved Fuchs．

　　Usually, the polar researchers have good meals．Some even have feasts on holidays like Christmas and New Year's Day．Vegetables are always welcomed and usually finished the quickest．Life on the ice means living with other researchers in tight living spaces．Most people sleep in dormitory．More remote field camps use separate tents．So．at least some researchers don't have to put up with annoying snorers．

　　WENZHOU(Xinhua)-- The train collision(碰撞)in east China's Zhejiang Province has killed 39 people and left 192 others injured as of Saturday night, said a spokesman with the Ministry of Railways．

　　“A total of 132 people are still being treated in hospitals,”said Wang Yongping, spokesman with the ministry at a press conference．

　　“Eleven people remain in danger,” said Cheng Jinguo, head of the health bureau in the city of Wenzhou, where the collision happened Saturday night．

　　Cheng said at the press conference that 52 people who suffered slight injuries had been discharged(获准离开)from hospital．

　　Wang expressed condolences(哀悼)to the concerning families and sincere apology to all the passengers．

　　“The train's“black box”has been discovered and the ministry is investigating the cause of the crash,” Wang said，“The ministry will make public the cause of the accident as soon as the investigation is done and publish the names of the killed and injured．”

　　He said the crash has caused large numbers of casualties(伤亡人员)and great property losses．The ministry will find out the cause through thorough investigation and take effective measures to prevent similar accidents．

　　“Despite the accident,” the spokesman said，“ The ministry is still confident in the high-speed train．” “China's high-speed train is advanced and qualified．We have confidence in it,” he added．

　　The damaged rails have been repaired and were ready to restart operation, but the reopening was delayed by the stormy weather, according to Wang．Wang did not provide the exact time when the line would start operating again．

　　The accident occurred at about 8∶30 p. m．Saturday on a bridge near Wenzhou when bullet train D301 rear-ended(追尾)D3115, which reportedly lost power after lightning strike．

　　Surface Exploration．Robots make great explorers on planets, moons and other landing areas．Apart from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore．The air on most other planets is not enough for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment．The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand．Plus there would be complications(复杂)with radiation, weather, and shortage of gravity．Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions．

　　Data Collection．Robots are designed for collecting scientific data(数据)．Robots are also able to perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently．Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed much quicker and more accurately by robots．

　　Cost Effective．The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work．In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can carry not only humans but also enough food and water to keep them alive during the trip．Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end．Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break．

　　Space Travel．Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space．Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars．They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars’ history．

　　Besides calling 911, here is what to do in some life-threatening emergencies when no one is around to help．

　　First, you've got to acknowledge(承认)you're in trouble．Stay where you can be seen clearly and remember to rest．Keeping a sense of humor helps too－it reduces stress and helps creative thinking．In a wide open area, make a colorful cross out of rocks to show your present position．

　　Aim to hit the top of the chair against your stomach in the soft part below the bony upside-down V of the ribs(肋骨)．Make a sudden push against the chair．If you still can't breathe after six tries, call 911, even if you can't talk．Write the word choking somewhere nearby, and leave the line open until help arrives．

　　Use your hand or clean cotton, or paper towels, or a scarf, or any cloth you can find, and push down on the wound until the bleeding stops．But if you put a bandage around your leg tightly, you're going to close the vessels(血管)to the entire leg．In this way, you could lose your foot．

　　If you surprise a bear, don't run away．That invites an attack．Instead, stand up and back away slowly without looking the bear in the eyes．If it does charge at you, stick out your chest, raise your arms, and spread your legs．Shout at the bear to frighten it．If it’s going to attack, lie face down, with your hands held firmly behind your neck．Play dead until you’re sure the bear is gone．

　　As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy's little girl”．While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around．This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children's lives．In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people．Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice．From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others' needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others．His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is．I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down．I have always admired his open mind, compassion(同情)for people, and sense of understanding．He is a very reserved(保守的)man, but to everybody's surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends．

　　Living in his affection(爱)and instruction, I am very proud of my father．He also professes(声称)how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in．

　　If you were a pilot flying a plane, and suddenly the engine failed, would you eject(跳出), or stay in? For a pilot, the choice is very difficult．If he ejects, he is safe, but the plane crashes．If he stays in the plane, he risks his life．

　　Recently, Chinese Air Force pilot Li Feng, 38, faced this choice during a training exercise．It was March 7 and he was flying a Jian-10(Fighter-10)at 4,500 meters．A warning appeared on the plane’s computer screen．He realized the plane might fail at any moment．

　　Li Feng did a quick check of the engine and asked the base if he could return．When the fighter was 7 km away from the airport, however, the engine stopped working．The plane began to fall at a speed of 25 meters a second at an altitude of 1,160 meters．

　　Under Air Force rules, fighter pilots may eject if their aircraft loses engine power below 2,000 meters and can't be restarted．Before Li lost contact with the control tower, the commander in the air base asked him to eject．But Li Feng insisted on having another try．

　　“I knew where the deadline(to give up the aircraft)was and was prepared for the ejection, but I decided not to give up unless the fighter was totally out of control,” Li recalled(回忆)during a recent television interview．

　　After 104 seconds, Li was able to bring the fighter to a safe landing．The plane only suffered slight damage．

　　“You are a hero! Congratulations!” Li's teacher, Xu Yongling wrote in a text message to him after the landing．He said Li was a cool-headed pilot and very professional(专业的)．

　　Li's brave and calm act not only saved the 200 million yuan aircraft but also gave him invaluable first-hand experience of dealing with an engine emergency(紧急情况)．

　　For his outstanding performance, the Air Force recently awarded him a gold medal．
