Against the supposition(假设)that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions.Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade.Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season.Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate.Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming.Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in.The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground.Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature.Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years.Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results.Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling.Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

(1)

According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _________.

[ ]

A.

result in a warming climate

B.

cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

C.

lead to a longer fire season

D.

protect the forests and the environment there

(2)

The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT _________.

[ ]

A.

large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere

B.

the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase

C.

snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space

D.

ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun

(3)

Earlier studies about northern forest fires _________.

[ ]

A.

analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

B.

indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

C.

suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

D.

suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming.

(4)

The underlined part “soaked up” in the last paragraph most probably means _________.

[ ]

A.

B.

(5)

From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may _________.

[ ]

A.

warm the climate as the supposition goes

B.

allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

C.

destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

D.

help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

My father's reaction to the bank building at 43rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York city was immediate and definite:"You won't catch me putting my money in there!" he declared, "Not in that glass box !"

Of course, my father is a gentleman of the old school, a member of the generation to whom a good deal of modern architecture is upsetting, but I am convinced that his negative response was not so much to the architecture as to a violation of his concept of the nature of money.

In his generation money was thought of as a real commodity(实物)that could be carried, or stolen.Consequently, to attract the custom of a sensible man, a bank had to have heavy walls, barred windows, and bronze(青铜)doors, to affirm the fact, however untrue, that money would be safe inside. If a building's design made it appear impenetrable(难以渗透的), the institution(公共机构, 协会, 制度)was necessarily reliable, and the meaning of the heavy wall as an architecture symbol dwelt in the prevailing attitude toward money.

But the attitude toward money has, of course, changed.Excepting pocket money, cash of any kind is now rarely used; money as a tangible(切实,实在)commodity has largely been replaced by credit.A deficit(赤字)economy, accompanied by huge expansion, has led us to think of money as product of the creative imagination. The banker no longer offers us a safe:he offers us a service in which the most valuable element is the creativity for the invention of large numbers. It is in no way surprising, in view of this change in attitude, that we are witnessing the disappearance of the heavy-walled bank.

Just as the older bank emphasized its strength, this bank by its architecture boasts of imaginative powers. From this point of view it is hard to say where architecture ends and human assertion(人们的说法)begins.

(1)

The main idea of this passage is that _________.

[ ]

A.

money is not as valuable as it was in the past

B.

the architectural style of the older bank is superior to that of the modern bank

C.

changes have taken place in both the appearance and the concept of banks

D.

prejudice makes the older generation think that the modern bank is unreliable

(2)

How do the older generation and the younger one think about money?

[ ]

A.

The former thinks more of money than the latter.

B.

The younger generation values money more than the older generation.

C.

Both generations rely on the imaginative power of bankers to make money.

D.

To the former money is a real commodity but to the latter it is a means to produce more money.

(3)

According to this passage, a modern banker should be _________.

[ ]

A.

imaginative and creative

B.

reliable and powerful

C.

sensible and impenetrable

D.

ambitious and friendly

(4)

It can be inferred from the passage that the author's attitude towards the new trend in banking is _________.

[ ]

A.

cautious

B.

regretful

C.

positive

D.

hostile(敌意的)

(5)

Cash is rarely used nowadays because _________.

[ ]

A.

it is no longer needed

B.

it is no longer useful

C.

it is often replaced by credit cards

D.

credit cards took place.

The easy way out isn’t always the easiest.I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal.I glanced through my cook book and chose a menu which included homemade bread.Knowing the bread would take time.I started on it as soon as Doug left for work.As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl.Soon there was a sticky dough covered with ugly yellowish marks.Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to face Doug laughing at my work.I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice.He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed.Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin.Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see.I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast(酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing.I had to admit what the living thing was and why it was there.I don’t know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing-Doug or me.

I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school.I lived a casual life, without caring about the future.I smoked, drank with friends and made girl friends.Little did I realize that casualness would certainly lead to loss.

Two yeas had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL in more than half the subjects.I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found about it.You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.

Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He lost his temper but he just told me, “Son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on”.It hit me like a roundhouse kick(回旋踢)from Bruce Lee.I was jolted(震摇)out of my bones! I couldn’t comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college.I owed everybody money:the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, etc.I was living a life filled with credit.

One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a magna cum laude(优等成绩).Life was never the same again. This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large.Even today it still motivates me when I feel that I’m about to lose or give up.It reminds me that I can do it!

阅读理解

Last week I was in the boarding area of the airport, very excited about my trip home to see my parents.I had many plans for the weekend. But my daydream was interrupted by an elderly woman talking loudly into her cellphone. She kept asking the person to meet her where she was and was repeating the gate mumber into the phone. With each repeat she got a little louder. All the people around were trying to avoid laughing.

Then I heard her say, “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you. There seems to be something wrong with my hearing aid.” As I waited for my turn to board, I noticed her tone was becoming increasingly frantic(狂躁的)as she tried to understand the person on the other end of the phone.

It was almost my turn to board.I couldn’t stop looking back at the woman. It made me think how lucky I was to have my hearing. Then I realised I could do something to help.

I walked over to the woman and shouted, “Let me help you hear.I’ll tell you what the person is saying.” The doubt that flickered(闪烁)across her face was quickly replaced with understanding, then relief(欣慰).

I took the phone from her, listened for a moment, and then told the woman that her husband was waiting for her in the baggage area as he could not enter the gate area. Then I pointed her in the right direction.

It took me less than two minutes to help the woman, but my pride in having been able to help her remains strong.
