Honeybees

　　Honeybees can do three kinds of jobs．

　　It is one of the most unusual insects in the world．Bees are special because they divide up their honeybee work．Each bee has a certain job to do．

　　The busiest bee is the worker．Workers build the nest, called a hive．Inside the hive, workers make a honeycomb from wax(蜂蜡)．They store honey there for food．Workers are always cleaning and fixing the hive．They even stand at the opening and fan their wings to cool the hive．Worker bees will attack anything－even people－to keep their hive safe．

　　Another kind of bee is the drone(雄蜂)．Drones are male bees, and their job is to fly with the queen bee and mate with her．After the queen mates, the worker bees drive the drones away．The drones then starve to death．

　　The third kind of bee is the queen．Each hive needs only one queen, and her job is laying eggs．She can lay as many as 2, 000 eggs a day．

　　A famous doctor once received a little child who was badly ill．Thanks to his skill and care, his young patient got well and was soon able to get up and run about again．

　　The child’s mother was very much obliged to the doctor, and she called on him to thank him for what he had done for her child．“Doctor,” she said, “you have saved my little son．I don’t know how to thank you enough．I feel that money alone cannot repay you, so I have made this little purse with my own hands, as a sign of my gratitude．I hope you will accept it．” The doctor stood up and said coldly, “Madam, a little present like that is very nice between friends, but a doctor needs to be paid properly for what he has done．” The lady was so surprised and hurt so much that she could not reply for a moment．Then she said quietly, “Perhaps you will tell me how much your fee is?”

　　“Fifty pounds”, he answered．

　　The lady opened the little purse and took out four fifty-pound bank notes．She handed one of them to the doctor, and put the other three back into the purse．She put the purse into her handbag and, saying good bye to the doctor, went out of the room．

　　There was no official confirmation of the reported death and spokespersons for Jackson could not be reached for comment．"We've just learned Michael Jackson has died," TMZ said．"Michael suffered a cardiac(心脏的)arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him．We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back," the entertainment site said．It added, "A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived．"

　　Earlier, the Los Angeles Times said the singer had been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital by fire department paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived at the singer's home．The newspaper said paramedics performed perfectly at the scene before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital．Jackson had been due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010．The singer, whose hits included "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months．The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within minutes of going on sale in March．

　　His lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, makes him one of the most successful entertainers of all time．There were concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors．

　　Kids who receive special education are, without doubt, the hardest working children in any school．When they are having difficulty learning basic literacy and number concepts, when they break rules, when they need more services, support and adult attention than their peers, then they are struggling the hardest．In psychology, we are trained to think that if we are feeling angry or confused when sitting with a patient, then we are probably feeling just what our patient is feeling．The same is true for students with disabilities．Whatever we feel when we work with them, they are probably feeling as they work with us．

　　If you have a disability that affects your education, then you have a brain disorder．Because education, even in mathematics, is largely verbal(用言辞), most brain disorders responsible for educational disabilities affect language, and how you process words and ideas in written and oral form．To imagine how much effort a child with a language disability spends each school day, imagine yourself attending a school today taught in a language you had a basic understanding of．Imagine though, that while you seem fluent to others, you have trouble when people talk too fast, use idioms or expressions．

　　When adults and classmates blame, or criticize kids who receive special education, they are struggling with their own confusion．It is difficult to imagine the world as it is lived by someone with an educational disability．It is difficult to understand how someone who can be so "normal" can have so many problems．It is so easy to imagine that if they just tried harder…without understanding that just to do the ordinary, kids with disabilities are making an extraordinary effort．

　　A young man was getting ready to graduate from college．For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted．

　　As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car．Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study．His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him．He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box．Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold．Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible．

　　Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business．He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him．He had not seen him since that graduation day．Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son．He needed to come home immediately and take care of things．

　　When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart．He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago．With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages．As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible．It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired．On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words．"PAID IN FULL"．

　　How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for．

　　Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect "the packaging" to be different．What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened．

　　While they were signing the papers, the wife told the husband．“I really love you, but I really can't carry on anymore, I'm sorry．” "It's OK, I understand．" said the husband．Little did she know that, over the years, the husband has been trying all ways to please her, little did she know that drumsticks were the husband's favorite．Little did he know that she never thought he understands her at all, little did he know that she hates drumsticks even though all he wants is the best for her．

　　That night, both of them couldn't sleep, toss and turn, toss and turn．After hours, the old man couldn't take it anymore, he knows that he still loves her, and he can't carry on life without her, he wants her back, he wants to tell her, he is sorry, he wants to tell her, "I love you．" He picked up the phone, started dialing her number．Ringing never stops．He never stops dialing．

　　On the other side, she was sad, she couldn't understand how come after all these years, he still doesn't understand her at all, she loves him a lot, but she just can't take it any more．Phone's ringing, she refuses to answer knowing that it's him．"I want to keep it this way, if not I will lose face．"She thought．Phone is still ringing．She has decided to pull out the cord．Little did she remember, he had heart problems．

　　The next day, she received news that he had passed away．She rushed down to his apartment, saw his body, lying on the couch still holding on to the phone．He had a heart attack when he was still trying to get through(接通)her phone line．

　　Margaret Bourke-White was one of the leading news reporters of the 20^th century．But she did not write news．She told her stories with a camera．Margaret Bourke-White began her career as an industrial photographer in the early 1930s．In 1936, she accepted the American publisher Henry Luce’s invitation and went to his magazine, called Life, and later another magazine called Fortune．

　　In the 1930s, Margaret Bourke-White met the American writer Erskine Caldwell．They decided to produce a book about poor country people of the South．They traveled through eight states．Their book, You Have Seen Their Faces, was published in 1937．It was a great success．

　　In 1938, some countries in Europe were close to war．Margaret Bourke-White and Caldwell went there to report on these events．The next year they got married．

　　During the World War Two, she became an official photographer with the United States Army．Her photographs were to be used jointly by the military(军队)and by Life magazine．She was the first woman to be permitted to work at the front during World War Two．

　　After the war, she went to India and took a famous photograph of Mohandas Gandhi called “Gandhi at His Spinning Wheel”．She was the last person to photograph Gandhi before he was murdered in 1948．

　　Often, Margaret Bourke-White was not satisfied with what she had done．She would look at her pictures and see something she had failed to do, or something she had not done right．Reaching perfection was not easy．Many things got in the way of her work．She said, “There is only one moment when a picture is there．And a moment later, it is gone forever．My memory is full of those pictures that were lost．”

　　In choosing a friend, one should be very careful．A good friend can help you study．You can have fun together and make each other happy．Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends．They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away．How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质)of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠)．

　　Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend．A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling．He is not quick to judge．Instead, he tries to learn from others．He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful．He is also a good listener．

　　At the same time, however, a good friend is honest．He does not look for faults(过错)in others．He notices their good points．In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me．

　　Another quality of a friend is reliability．I can always depend on(信赖)a good friend．If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there．If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me．If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me．

　　There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special．A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun．We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship．That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with．A good friend likes the same things I like．We share experience and learn from each other．A good friend has a good sense of humor, too．He likes to laugh with me．That is how we share in the joy of being friends．And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me．

　　When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!
