　　When I got up, Mom was already awake．I could hear her doing something in the kitchen．It’s was my birthday, and I was afraid．

　　What if my husband had neglected(疏忽)to take Mom shopping for a card? Once Mom found it was my birthday, she would be sad that she had forgotten and had nothing to give me．She even can’t remember what we did two hours ago because of dementia(痴呆)．

　　Birthdays are not a big deal to me．I hate growing older．I don’t mind if Mom forgets my birthday as long as she still remembers me．That someday she might not recognize me has been my biggest fear ever since Mom got dementia．I can’t imagine anything more devastating than being forgotten by my own mother．

　　When Mom was diagnosed with vascular dementia seven years ago, I was told she did not have Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病)．I hoped that meant she would never forget her family．But as Mom’s dementia progressed, I realized that I had no idea whether vascular dementia could be as bad as Alzheimer’s．I really didn’t understand the difference．

　　The sleeping house was quiet except for the sound of Mom washing the bowls left last night in the kitchen．Will Mom live long enough to forget me? Will the day come when she no longer worries about remembering my birthday because she no longer knows that I exist?

　　In the kitchen, Mom heard me come near．She hurried to the door, face ringing with smiles．“Happy birthday to you,” she sang．

　　We laughed as I hugged her tightly, and both of us were very surprised that she had remembered．Moments later she said, “Oh, there seems to be something here for you．” She brought me her card．My husband did, after all, take her shopping．The birthday-for-a-daughter card was filled with expressions of love in pink．

　　The little old man walked right up to the cash register, placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal．The couple took a table near the back wall and started taking food off the tray．There was one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink．The little old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut in half．He placed one half in front of his wife．Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife．He took a sip(吸)of the drink and then set the cup down between them．

　　As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger the crowd began to get restless．Again you could tell what they were thinking, “ That poor old couple．All they can afford is one meal for the two Of them．”

　　As the man began to eat his French fries one young man stood and came over to the old couple’s table．He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat．The old man replied that they were just fine．They were used to sharing everything．

　　As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly the young man could stand it no longer．Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food．

　　After being politely refused again, he finally asked a question of the little old lady．“ Ma’am, why aren’t you eating? You said that you shared everything．What is it that you are waiting for?”

　　She answered, “The false teeth”．

　　In the 13^th century, the famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China．During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things．One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money．In western countries, people didn’t use the paper money until 15^th century．However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7^th century．

　　A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2,000 years ago．He took the wood from trees and made it into paper．He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book．

　　Now paper still comes from trees．We use a lot of paper every day．If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth．If there are no trees, there will be no paper．Every day, people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city．It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper．This means that we are cutting nearly 48,000 trees every day．Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now．

　　So how can we save paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes．We can use cotton handkerchiefs and not paper ones．When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags．If the shop assistant gives us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later．

　　Everyone can help to save paper．If we all think carefully, we can help protect trees．But we should do it now, before it is too late．

　　What to do if a fire starts?

　　Imagine it’s late at night．You hear the smoke detectors go off．You smell smoke when you wake up．Do you know what to do?

　　If a fire starts in your home, remember your escape plan and leave as quickly as possible．Keep the following things in mind to make a safe escape．

　　● Call“Fire!”to warn everyone in your family．

　　● If you know where the fire is, close as many doors as possible between you and the fire．

　　● If you’re in bed, roll out of bed and onto the floor．Crawl on the floor next to a wall．Being near the ground makes it easier to breathe．If possible, cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth．

　　● Feel the entire surface of a door before you open it．If the door is warm or hot, do not open it．The fire is probably right outside your room．Find another way to leave the room．If the door is cool, open it a little．

　　● Look out and try to see the fire．If it is safe, leave the room．Remember to stay on the floor．

　　● If your clothes catch fire, stop immediately．Drop to the ground and roll．Remember：Stop, drop and roll．

　　In the computer age, most of us think a broadband(宽带)Internet connection to be common．Whether wired or wireless, today's connections are many times faster．Videos play smoothly；complex websites load quickly；and the files are much bigger too．

　　But there's still a catch, of course．You have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet．If you don't, it's slow for you to use dial-up connection．And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet connection at all．

　　Technology experts often talk about, the "last mile" problem, which refers to the difficulty of making Internet available for remote places．It is much more difficult to deliver connection to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries．Internet service providers, for their part, have been unwilling to provide connection to areas with smaller population, where the Internet users wouldn’t cover the expense．

　　But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users．Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren't available everywhere．Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines．Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables(光纤电缆)promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users．

　　Still, the“last mile" problem remains hard to deal with．There will always be somewhere that doesn't have an affordable broadband connection．But someday that might not matter．If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication(迹象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go．
