　　Dalian Medical University(Dlmedu)is a famous university both in China and in the world．It is unusual among universities in having a student body made up largely of undergraduates．

　　Enrollment：

　　Domestic students：Dlmedu enrolls students from all parts of China．The number of students enrolled is stipulated(规定)by the Ministry of Education．Students enrolled should pass the Unified National College Entrance Examination and get the scores set by Dlmedu．Foreign students：The university can enroll foreign students, including undergraduates, vocational trainees, graduates, students of continuing education and the students who aim to learn Chinese language．Foreign students at all levels should complete the application forms and present all the related certificates．Students who conform to(符合)the university stipulation will be admitted．Foreign students pursuing academic degrees should have an exam score, indicating their good Chinese．For detailed information, please read “The Dlmedu General Regulations of Foreign Student Admission”．

　　With the admission notice and the related certificates at the time specified, students to be enrolled by Dlmedu should go for registration and pay tuition fees．They will not be admitted until passing the physical check-up(体检)．

　　Most people around the world use the same calendar(日历)as you do, which is called the Gregorian calendar．The months are named mostly for gods from ancient myths(神话)．For example, the name January comes from Janus, the Roman god of gates and doorways．And March comes from Mars, the Roman god of war．

　　But native people in North America had another way of choosing names for months．Different tribes gave them different names, depending on happenings in the natural world．Also, months were called “moons”, since they were measured from one new moon to the next．

　　For one tribe, the Moon of Popping Trees came at the beginning of the year, when frost made branches creak(吱吱作响)and crack with cold．Other tribes had names for months such as Baby－Bear Moon, Buding－Moon, Maple(枫)Sugar Moon, and Strawberry Moon．And it's not hard to guess what happened during Egg－Laying Moon．Goose－Calling Moon, or Food－Almost－Gone Moon．

　　Want to make your own calendar? Start by going outside with a sheet of paper and pencil．Notice the natural things around you．Look．Listen．Sniff．Are flowers blooming? Birds singing? Squirrels building nests? On your sheet, write down the date and the interesting natural things you see．You can make little drawings too．

　　Do this several times during the next few weeks．By the end of the month, you can choose your favorite natural event and name the month．

　　For millions of people, the American dream of owning a home seems to be slipping out of reach．

　　“Maybe young couples can no longer afford to buy a ready-made house as their parents did,'' says 40-year-old building instructor Pat Hennin．“But they can still have a home．Like their pioneer ancestors, they can build it themselves, and at less than half the cost of a ready-made house．”

　　The owner-builders came from every occupational group, although surprisingly few are professional building workers．Many take the plunge with little or no experience．“I learned how to build my house from reading books,” says John Brown, who built a six-room home for ＄25, 000 in High Falls, New Jersey．“If you have patience and the carpentry(木匠)skill to make a bookcase, you can build a house．” An astonishing 50 percent of these owner builders hammer every nail, 1ay every pipe, and wire every switch with their own hands．The rest contract(承包)for some parts of the task．But even those who just act as contractors and finish the insides of their homes can save from 30 percent to 45 percent of what a ready-made home would cost．

　　One survey revealed that 60 percent of owner-builders also design their homes．Many others buy commercial house plans for less than ＄100 or use plans available from the U．S．Department of Agriculture．

　　The wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 has focused the world's attention on the UK．

　　In Britain, there is a constant debate about the connection of the royal family with modern British society．However, Windsor(the family name of the British Royal Family)and Middleton have been seen to represent a more modern, forward-looking nation．

　　Nigel Baker, the British ambassador to Bolivia, believes that the royal wedding is “about modern Britain”．“The estimated 2 billion spectators across the world will see that Britain is one of the most culturally and ethnically(种族上)various nations in the world, home to 270 nationalities speaking 300 different languages, founded on tolerance and respect for difference,” wrote Baker on his blog．

　　According to Baker, the wedding could help viewers to see “why Britain is one of the most dynamic(有活力的)and creative countries in the world”：The television on which most people watched the event was invented by John Logie Baird, a Briton, and the World Wide Web that broadcast the event to millions more was invented by another Briton, Tim Berners-Lee．

　　The guests who attended the wedding ceremony gave more than a few clues as to the nature of modern Britain．David and Victoria Beckham represent Britain's obsession(着迷)with football and celebrity．

　　Leaders from different religious backgrounds supported Baker's comments on the multicultural nature of modern British society．

　　Before the wedding, David Elliott, arts director of the British Council China, agreed that the wedding would be a showcase for modern Britain：“I think, and hope, that it(modern British influence)would be values like openness, multiculturalism, creativity, sense of humor and the traditional British sense of fair play,” he said．

　　Furthermore, events such as the Olympics in London in 2012 may also increase people's sense of Britishness．

　　According to a poll published in Daily Telegraph, more than a third of people in the UK admitted they felt “very British” when watching the Olympics．

　　Children's fighting over the same toy is a problem that all parents or childcare providers face．If one child wants to play the Play Station, all the other children are suddenly interested in doing the same thing quickly abandoning whatever has previously held their attention．This is human nature playing itself out in children．People often think that what someone else has or is doing is more desirable than what they have or are doing．They will abandon their own wish to participate in the wish of another so that they do not lose something better．Children start this at a young age．

　　Parents and childcare workers often see the children fighting for rights to one toy rather than being satisfied with playing with something else．The best way to help children overcome this human habit is to teach them to consider others more important than themselves．They need to respect other people．So if Johnny wants to use the Play Station unbroken, then the other children should not fight to take it from him．Johnny should also care about the other children and render the controller to them in a fair amount of time．

　　If a child is always grabbing everything for himself, then there is a problem that needs working out．If a child is always dissatisfied with what he has and wants what the other child has, then that needs to be talked about．Parents can use these fights over toys to help their children understand how to treat others right．This does not always mean punishment．Teach the child the way that he should go and he will not depart from it．Instruct him wisely．Have the child apologize to the other child if he has infringed upon(侵犯)his rights．Teach love, forgiveness, self-control, and kindness．Practice this in your life and the child will learn that this is the better way and live accordingly．Next time all the children are fighting for the same toy, use it as an object lesson to teach them these things．

　　Foot-controlled mouse is a new kind of mouse．It is controlled by the feet instead of the hands, to help the disabled when they surf the Internet．It looks like a pair of blue slippers．When users press the slippers with their forefeet, they are clicking the left mouse button; when people press with their heels, they are clicking the right mouse button; when they roll their feet over the slippers, they can view web pages．

　　Dirty water filter(过滤器)can make dirty water drinkable, which is a good way to solve the lack of water and also does good to the environment．There are two main parts：the drive zone to pump water and the material zone to reduce harmful things．Rain and fish tank water can be cleaned in the material zone．Someone told us that water was sent by air to Wenchuan．If they had sent water-purifying plant instead, people could have had more water after the earthquake．

　　Transformer car is named Tranfus．By changing the size of tyres and the structure of a car, it can become a motorbike or a luggage carrier．The name Tranfus is short for “transforming for us”．Tranfus can change into a luggage carrier, and users could walk with it．But its inventor doesn't think Tranfus will be on the market soon as some companies like it, but none are willing to invest．

　　It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night．The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful：blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently．

　　My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him．I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same．I'm so glad I did．

　　On the road to the harbor we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbor itself was in fairly good shape．After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea．As we got on board, we noticed two big humps(脊背)in the distance．

　　On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby．We couldn't believe it－there aren't any whales along the coast here．The storm must have driven them across the ocean in the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive．

　　The little baby whale－actually as big as our boat－was obviously stuck and could not move．The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools(漩涡)and waves．“She's trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said．At this point, my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat toward the baby whale, pushed it gently．With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water．Then it swam up right beside its mum．They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction．We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel．Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe－and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes．Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight form the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance．

　　In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonder animals for almost an hour and a half．That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day．Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea．

　　Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living．One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2：30 am．When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window．

　　I walked to the door and knocked．“Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice．

　　After a long pause, the door opened．A small woman in her eighties stood before me．By her side was a small suitcase．

　　I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman．She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car．

　　She kept thanking me for my kindness．“It's nothing,” I told her, “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated．”

　　“Oh, you're such a good man,” she said．When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

　　“It's not the shortest way,” I answered quickly．

　　“Oh, I'm in no hurry,” she said．“I'm on my way to a hospice(临终医院)．I don't have any family left．The doctor says I don't have very long time．”

　　I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器)．

　　For the next two hours, we drove through the city．She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl．

　　Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing．

　　At dawn, she suddenly said, “ I'm tired．Let's go now．”

　　We drove in silence to the address she had given me．

　　“How much do I owe you?” she asked．

　　“Nothing,” I said．

　　“You have to make a living,” she answered．“Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered．

　　Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug．She held onto me tightly．Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy．”

Hopping Around the World

　　Hopscotch(跳房子)is a very old game．It usually uses a puck, such as a stone, and a pattern(picture)that players hop(跳跃)through．Here are some different ways to play hopscotch．

　　Escargot

　　Escargot is the French word for “snail．” So its pattern looks like a snail．No puck is used．Players hop through on one foot．You may rest in the center on both feet．Then, hop back and write your name in a space．No other player may land in that space．At the end, the player who owns the most spaces wins．

　　Pele

　　Children play Pele on the island of Aruba with a stone or coin．Throw the puck into the first box and hop into Box 2．Then, hop up to the top and turn around．Come back to Box 2 and pick up the puck．Hop over Box 1 and out of the pattern．Next, throw the puck into Box 2 and start again．If you make a mistake, you lose your turn．The first player to hop through the pattern wins．

　　Gat Fei Gei

　　In this Chinese way, the puck is a piece of stone．At the top is the pig's head．Throw the puck into the pig's head and hop through．When you reach boxes 7 and 8, turn around and pick up the puck from behind．If you hop through the pattern without making a mistake, pick a box and write your name in it．No one else can land in that box! The player who owns the most boxes wins．

　　La Thunkuna

　　Children play this game in Bolivia．The puck is a stone or the skin from an orange．Instead of writing a number in each square, players write each day of the week．Throw the puck into the first box．Hop over it into the second box．Next, kick the puck backwards and out of the pattern．Then, hop out．On your next turn, throw the puck into the next box and so on．The first player to hop all the way through wins．

　　Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspired kids' imagination worldwide, has celebrated its 50th anniversary．

　　On January 28, 1958, a man named Godtfred Kirk Christiansen created the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almost every child's toy box．The simple building block has become one of the most well-known and popular toys around the world．

　　"The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children and others to develop their creativity and imagination," said Charlotte Simonsen, a spokeswoman of the Danish Lego company．

　　The company's building brick allows an infinite number of links．With just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego．A half-century after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and taking them apart．Also, the bricks made today can still interlock with those made in 1958．

　　Lego bricks are not just a child's play：they also attract the interest of adults．South Korean adventurer, Heo Young-Ho, who climbed Mount Everest in 1987, left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb．

　　After its great success, Lego experienced a severe crisis at the end of the 1990s, hit hard by fierce competition from electronic games．This so-called "Toy of the Century" then suffered a dark period that lasted several years．

　　With great efforts, the company began to prosper again, and in 2006 it earned about 1．5 billion dollars in 130 countries．Seven boxes of Lego are now sold every second around the world, and 19 billion bricks are produced each year：enough to circle the Earth five times！
