　　“My family has been watching the ‘Super Girl'singing competition TV programme．My little daughter asked me what 'PK' meant, but I had no idea, ”explained the puzzled father．

　　To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing games online, it is impossible not to know this term．In such Internet games, “PK” is short for “Player Kill”, in which two players fight until one ends the life of the other．

　　“My ‘GG' came back this summer from college．He told me I've grown up to be a ‘PLMM'．I loved to ‘FB' with him together；he always took me to the ‘KPM', ”went one composition．

　　“GG” means Ge Ge(Chinese pinyin for brother)．“PLMM” refers to Piao Liang Mei Mei(beautiful girl)．“FB” means Fu Bai(corruption)．“KPM” is short for KF．Pizza Hut and McDonald's．

　　Some specialists welcome Internet jargons as a new development in language．

　　If you do not even know what a Kong Long(dinosaur, referring to an ugly looking female)ora Qing wa(frog, referring to an ugly looking male)is, you will possibly be regarded as a CaiNiao!

Obama still smokes in secret

　　US President Barack Obama may have just made life more difficult for cigarette smokers, but he still smokes every now and then in secret．

　　Obama, who has publicly struggled to quit smoking, said he still hasn't completely kicked the habit even after signing a law this week that will set tough new rules for the tobacco industry．

　　“As a former smoker I constantly struggle with it．Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes．Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No,” Obama said at a news conference．

　　“I don't do it in front of my kids, I don't do it in front of my family．I would say that I am 95 percent cured, but there are times where I mess up,” he said．

　　The new law gives the US Food and Drug Administration the power to strictly limit the making and marketing of tobacco products．

　　At a White House signing ceremony Monday, Obama said he was among the nearly 90 percent of smokers who took up the habit before their 18th birthday．

　　“Once you go down this path it's something you continually struggle with, which is exactly why the law we signed is so important because what we don't want is kids going down that path in the first place,” he said at the news conference．

　　Nearly 20 percent of Americans smoke and tobacco use kills about 440,000 people a year in the United States due to cancer, heart disease, and other serious diseases．

　　A ban on smoking in public places has come into force in China – home to a third of the world's smokers．

　　The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year．

　　But the rules have been criticized, because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them．

　　Many business owners hate rules that force them to ban smoking on their premises(经营场所)because many customers do not like the rules and complain．

　　The rules do not allow smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theatres, but not at the office．

　　Employers have a duty to warn staff off the dangers of smoking but do not have to forbid them from lighting up at their desks．

　　It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking．Research suggests that only one in four knows the harm cigarettes of second-hand smoke can cause．

　　Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to reduce the numbers dying from smoking-related diseases．

　　At the same time the government makes a lot of money from the sales of cigarettes by the state-owned firm that makes and sells all tobacco products throughout the country．

　　The latest report from the US-based institute of International Education said China, for the first time, has become the top country of origin for international students in the United States．

　　For Yang Fan, a journalism(新闻专业)student, said studying in the United States is a way to escape the competition for places in China's top universities．

　　“Due to limited education resources, only about 60 percent of high school graduates in China enter college, and a much lower rate enters the top-level ones．“A foreign degree will definitely help when I seek a job in China,” Yang said．

　　Both Yang's and Luo's parents are supportive of them studying abroad．Neither of them is thinking of settling down in the United States after graduation．

　　“It is not realistic to do so．As a journalism student, there would be no advantage for me to work in the United States,” Yang said．“But in China, with a US degree and good English, I may stand out against other students who have only studied in China．”

　　China still needs to improve its environment for scientists and high-level talents, said Xiao Mingzheng, director of the Center for Human Resource Development and Management Research of Peking University, adding that, in particular, the country needs to improve its policies relating to research environments．

　　In June, the Chinese government published a plan concerning talent development for the next 10 years．In it, it has improved policies and increased budgets to attract talented students back home．
