　　According to The Secret Life Of The Grown－up Brain, by science writer, Barbara Strauch, our brains actually get better with age．In fact, she argues many new studies have found that the brain hits its peak(最高点)between our 40s and 60s－much later than previously thought．

　　Furthermore, not losing many brain cells as we age, we preserve them, and even produce new ones well into middle age．For years it's been accepted that the brain, much like the body, got worse with age．But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age(变老)suggests otherwise．

　　This continuing research has followed 6, 000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years．It has found that, on average, they performed better in cognitive tests in their late 40s and 50s than they had in their 20s．Specifically, older people did better in tests of vocabulary, spatial orientation(空间方向)skills, verbal memory(how many words you can remember)and problem solving．

　　Where they were weaker was in numeracy(计算能力)(how quickly one can multiply, add, subtract and divide)and the speed at which they could move．However, with harder tasks, such as problem－solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond．In short, researchers are going to come up with scientific evidence that we do get wiser with age．

　　Wesley Autrey can't fly, but he is still being called a real-life Superman! Last week, the brave 50-year-old rescued Cameron Hollopeter, 20, from being hit by a train．The train was entering a subway station in New York City．The young man had fallen from the station's platform and onto the train tracks a few feet below．

　　Autrey, a construction worker and Navy veteran(老兵), was with his two young daughters when he saw Hollopeter fall．Autrey made a quick decision and jumped onto the tracks．He then rolled himself and Hollopeter into a gap, or opening, between the rails．Autrey used his own body to protect the young man．

　　Five of the train's cars passed over the two before stopping completely．The two men were both un-harmed．Hollopeter's stepmother, Rachel Hollopeter, called Autrey an "angel"．Autrey visited the New York Film Academy student in the hospital on Wednesday．

　　For his bravery, Autrey was given a hero's welcome at City Hall．New York City Mayor(市长)Michael Bloomberg presented Autrey with the Bronze Medallion(铜奖章)．It is the city's highest award for achievements by its citizens．Mayor Bloomberg called Audrey "a great man--a man who makes us all proud to be New Yorkers．"

　　As of September 1, owners of large-sized vehicles, such as limousines, are ordered to use the highest national standard of gasoline, which pollutes less．

　　The city's environmental protection bureau(环保局)has set up 29 checkpoints to monitor automobile emissions along with four mobile units．Since August 1, the bureau has also carried out checks on vehicles' emission control systems to make sure they are working correctly．

　　About 30 percent of the total 9,300 government cars and the city's police officers' cars will be off the road from October 12 to December 22, in order to decrease pollution emissions, said Li Zhuo, director of the motor pollution control office, Guangzhou environmental protection bureau．

　　Meanwhile, all construction sites in the city, except those with special authorization, will be asked to stop building from the end of September to the end of December, said Zhang Guangning, secretary of Guangzhou Party committee．

　　In November, the city usually registers its worst air quality due to the colder weather, which makes it more difficult to monitor pollution．

　　Jian Jianyang, director of the pollution control division at the environmental protection bureau, said factories that pollute excessively will have to limit their production during the Games and will not be allowed to return to normal production levels until December 20．

　　Guangzhou began to look into improving its air quality after it won its bid to host the 16th Asian Games in July 2004．

　　“It's not just an emergency package to limit the air pollution,” said Jian．“It's a long –term measure and we see the Games as an opportunity to achieve it quicker．”

　　A survey on sina．com, one of China's major news portals(门户站点), shows nearly half of the 20,015 people surveyed said the movie was “very good and surpassed expectations”．

　　About one quarter of those surveyed said the great performances of the movie's cast moved them the most．

　　Also there was laughter during the movie's screening, especially when advertisements were inserted into the story line of the movie and given close-up shots．

　　Fifteen minutes of the movie's total length of two and a half hours were for these advertisements, which have drawn criticism from the media as well as the public．

　　In an interview with Xinhua on Monday, Zhang Hongsen, vice director of the SARFT film department said advertisements placed in moves were necessary for film makers to make profits, as piracy(盗版行为)poses a threat to their revenues(财政收入)．

　　He said a tougher crackdown on piracy was essential to solving the problem of such advertisements placed into movies．

　　Birds use their right eye to see the Earth's magnetic field(磁场)and use it to navigate(导航), scientists have discovered．

　　German researchers found that if a bird's right eye was covered, it could not navigate effectively, while it could navigate perfectly well if the left eye was covered instead．

　　It has long been known that birds are able to sense magnetic fields and use them to navigate, particularly when migrating south for the winter．Now researchers have found that the bird actually sees the magnetic fields with their right eye giving information to the left side of their brain．

　　The magnetic images create light or dark shadings over what the bird usually sees with its normal vision．The shadings change as the bird turns its head, giving it a visual compass from the patterns of shading．

　　Scientists believe that the birds have molecules in their retina(视网膜)which shift into an active state when struck by blue light and that activity is picked up by the retina．To test the theories, scientists fitted robins(知更鸟)with goggles that were covered with clear foil(箔片)on one side and frosted foil on the other．

　　Both sides of the goggles were equally translucent(半透明的), allowing 70 percent of the light to get through, but on the frosted side the image was less clear．The birds were then kept in cages until it was time for them to migrate．

　　The birds were released into a funnel-shaped cage with its walls painted with fluid, which was scratched if the birds touched them．

　　The results were that birds with no eye coverings, and birds with the left eye covered set off in a northerly direction as expected, while those with the right eye covered were at a loss and headed in random directions．
