"Children should not be left unsupervised(无人监督的)to play with a dog." say experts in this week's British Medical Journal.Their advice is part of a review aimed at doctors who deal with dog bites.

"Dog bites and maulings are a worldwide problem, particularly in children." write Marina Morgan and John Palmer.Every year 250, 000 people who have been bitten by dogs attend minor injuries and emergency units in the United Kingdom, and half of all children are reportedly bitten by dogs at some time, boys more than girls.

"Dog owners also need to change their behavior", says Rachel Besser, a children's doctor and lifetime dog owner, in an article.

"It is clear that not all dog owners appreciate that children should not be left unsupervised with a dog", she says.Just as some parents are obliged to take parenting classes, she would like to see compulsive classes for expectant dog owners to teach them about the responsibilities of dog ownership.Educational programs are also needed to teach children about some precautionary(预防的)behaviors around dogs.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I recently ran into a friend I hadn't seen for a long while. Our conversation was lively and full of news from both sides. Before we parted she said,“You'll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in’’ I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me, and asking,“Oh, er …what brings you here? ”

Whatever happened to the unannounced drop-in visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s, it seemed that people-mostly relatives, but also friends-were always popping in.My parents would put coffee on, and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it.Then the conversation would begin…The neighbor lady, a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. The Irish man next door had such an accent that I remember asking what language he spoke. My Polish relatives arrived in packs…But I never heard my parents say anything like “We weren't expecting you’’ or “This isn't a good time.”Drop-in visitors had a certain right of way and became No.1.

What happened to such visits? Actually I know the answer.Times have changed.Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stay-at-home mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest.Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment.

Just the other day a former student of mine showed up.“I'm sorry for the surprise visit.”my student began.“I just wanted to see if you still lived here.I'll only stay a minute.”

My response was immediate.“No, you won't,”I said.“Just come in, sit, have coffee, and we'll talk.’’

I had nothing in the kitchen but we ordered pizza. And we had a lovely time.I have tried to keep the drop-in tradition alive though it takes some effort.

Dyslexia is a problem that restricts the ability to recognize words and connect sounds with letters when people read.People with this learning disorder may also have problems when they write.Dyslexia is not related to eyesight or intelligence. The problem involves areas of the brain that process language.Brain scientists are studying whether they can predict which young children may struggle with reading to provide them early help.John Gabrieli at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is leading the study of five-year-olds in about twenty schools in the Boston area.

They studied in the schools with kindergartens. And for all the children joining in the study, they give them a brief set of paper-and-pencil tests to look at which children appear to be at some risk for struggling to read.So far, fifty of them have been examined in a scanner, a special machine, to show brain activity.Written tests are not always able to identify dyslexia or other problems, while brain scans may offer a more scientific way to identify problems. And with reading problems, early identification is important. When it comes to helping children overcome reading difficulties, the younger the child, the more effective they are.

Reading problems are not usually identified until a child is in the third or fourth grade. The later children are recognized as poor readers, the less treatment can help. And, as Professor Gabrieli points out, poor reading can make education a struggle.Reading is everything.Even math and science have textbooks.

My husband, Michael, a manager of an ordinary company, came home from work one day saying,“It's not looking good.” At midnight, I woke up seeing him sitting in a chair, his hand on his forehead.I was worried.I had to cheer him up and help ourselves financially.

As an advisor for top companies and a teacher in creative thinking at the college of New Jewsey for years.I thought of a good plan. What if we undertake an adventure while making money from it? Michael disagreed at first but realized that with his cell phone, and computer, he could work anywhere.

We listed our house for rent and created a brand strategy, logo, and website for us-familyofftrack.com-and persuade five companies to support us.Their ads on our site would help pay travel costs, and we'd promote their brands on our trip in exchange for their support.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

We know, painkillers in a tablet can make your headache go away, and antibiotic from a tube can prevent your cuts from becoming infected. Can medicine come in chicken eggs? A team of scientists from Scotland says “yes.” They've kept some special chickens that lay eggs with disease-treating drugs inside.

These drugs are made of molecules called proteins.Animals make thousands of proteins-they're the main ingredients(成分)in skin, hair, milk, and meat.Since animals can make proteins easily, they're good animals for making protein drugs.

Researchers have already made cows, sheep, and goats that pump out protein drugs in their milk. But chickens are cheaper to take care of, need less room, and grow faster than these other animals.“Those qualities could make chickens a better choice to become living drug factories.” says Simon Lillico of the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland.

Lillico and a team of researchers changed chickens' DNA-the code that tells cells how to make proteins-so that the birds' cells made two protein drugs. One drug can treat skin cancer, and the other treats a nerve disease called multiple sclerosis.

The scientists changed the chickens' DNA so that the birds made these drugs only in their egg whites. This protects the chickens' bodies from the drugs' possible harmful effects and makes it easy for scientists to collect the drugs.

These special chickens can pass on their drug-laying abilities to their chicks. So far, the Scottish researchers have kept five generations of drug-producing chickens. But the scientists need to improve these chickens. The chickens don't make enough drugs to treat people yet.Once the researchers perfect their technique, you might eventually take your medicine from chicken eggs.

(1)

What is the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.

Animals and Protein Drugs.

B.

Medicine Packaged in Various Forms.

C.

A Scotland Scientist and His Chickens.

D.

Chickens:a Better Choice of Living Drug Factories.

B.

Compared to cows, sheep and goats, chickens are less expensive to be raised.

C.

Chickens can produce the best quality of drugs among the drug-producing animals.

D.

Chickens are smaller in size than cows, sheep and goats and therefore need less room.

(3)

Why did the chickens make the drugs only in the egg whites?

[ ]

A.

Because it will help to collect the drugs easily.

B.

Because it will not change the DNA of the chickens.

C.

Because it will be easy for the patients to take the drugs.

D.

Because it will prevent possible harmful effects on the patients.

(4)

A.

Scottish researchers have kept five more drug-producing chickens.

B.

This technique still needs improving so as to satisfy the normal application.

C.

In the future people with diseases will take eggs instead of pills.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Apple designs the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod.Each of Apple's products sounds cool and has become a fad(时尚).Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” and many other brands are following suit. The BBC's iPlayer, which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet, adopted the title in 2008.A lovely bear(popular in the US and UK)that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”.A slimmed-down version of London's Independent newspaper came out last week under the name “i”.In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.

Most “i” products are aimed at young people and considering the major readers of Independent “i”, it is no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name. But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter “i”.Why not use “a”, “b” or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King's College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Mr.Thorne told BBC Magazines, “Even when Apple created the iPad, it seems it didn't have one clear definition, However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability(轻便).” Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and they love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google” and “Twitter”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.

But as history shows, fads come and go.From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.
