When I was eight, I saw a movie about an island that had an erupting volcano and jungles filled with wild animals. The island was ruled by a beautiful woman called Tondalaya, the Fire Goddess of the Volcano. It was a low budget movie, but to me, it represented the perfect life. But through the years, Tondalaya was forgotten.

The week I turned 50, my marriage came to a sudden end.My house, furniture and everything I'd owned was sold to pay debts that I didn't even know existed. In a week I had lost my husband, my home and my parents who had refused to accept a divorce in the family.

I'd lost everything except my four teenage children.I used every penny I had to buy five plane tickets from Missouri to Hawaii.Everyone said I was crazy to think I could just run off to an island and survive.I was afraid they were right.

The next day, I quit my job, bought some art supplies and began doing what I loved.I hadn't painted a picture in 15 years.I wondered if 1 could Still paint. My hands trembled the first time I picked up a brush. But before an hour had passed, I was lost in the colors spreading across the canvas(画布)in front of me.And as soon as I started believing in myself, other people started believing in me, too.The first painting sold for$1500.

The past six years have been filled with adventures. My children and I have gone swimming with dolphins, watched whales and hiked around the crater rim(火山口边缘)of the volcano. We wake up every morning with the ocean in front of us and the volcano behind us.

Dear sir,

Your shipment of twelve thousand ‘Smart’ watches was received by our company this morningHowever, we wish to make a number of complaints concerning the serious delay in delivery and your failure to carry out our specific instructions with regard to this order

It was stressed from the beginning that the delivery date had to be less than six weeks from the first order, in order to meet our own customers’ requirementsWhile we understand that delays in production are occasionally unavoidablewe must point out that the major reason why the order was placed with your company was that we were assured by you of its speed of delivery, and that your existing stocks(存货)were sufficiently high to ensure immediate shipmentLate delivery of the goods has caused us to disappoint several of our most valued customersand is bound to have a negative effect on the potential future orders

The second complaint concerns the difference in colour between the watches we ordered and those deliveredIt was stated clearly in the original order that watches in combinations of green/purple and orange/purple only were requiredHowever, only half the watches in the delivery received are of the colours specifiedOur Hong Kong agent assures us that she stressed to you the importance of following our instructions precisely, since we consider there to be only a limited market in this country for watches of other colours at the present timeAny watches that are not of the specified colours willof coursebe returned to you

We are also somewhat concerned about the rather poor quality of the goods receivedsince it is obvious that the watches that finally arrived have been produced from inferior materials and have been manufactured to a lower standard than those in the sampleWe have also found that a number of the watches do not appear to be functioningWhether the latter problem is due to poor manufacturedamage during transportation or bad batteries is not yet clear, but we should like to point out that we feel this matter to be only your responsibility

As a result of the above problemsthereforewe feel that the most suitable course of action is to return to you unpaid any of the goods considered unsatisfactory, and to subtract(扣除)any resulting costs from our final settlementWe shall also, of course, be forced to reconsider whether any further orders should be placed with your company

We look forward to your prompt reply

Yours sincerely,

John Smith
