　　HANGZHOU, China-Millions of Chinese basketball fans who were upset about the retirement of Yao Ming, are excited to see another even more shining star, Jeremy Lin, rising from the N．B．A and becoming a household name all across China．

　　“We are amazed by Lin Shuhao's magic performance and should cheer him on, ” one Internet user wrote．

　　“His sport shirts have sold out, even including the counterfeit(仿制品)ones, ” said Zheng Xiaojun, a 24-year-old clerk．

　　Lin's amazing success over the last month has caught the imagination of the Chinese．He has been particularly popular here in northern Zhejiang province, from which his grandmother went to Taiwan in the late 1940s．

　　Cai Qi, a well-known micro blogger, posted a message on micro blog over the weekend stating that Lin's hometown is Jiaxing, a city near Hangzhou where Lin's grandmother grew up．

　　Cai Qi's nephew Yu Guohua, a 56-year-old factory worker, is Lin's closest relative still living in northern Zhejiang．He said in a telephone interview that Lin had come to play basketball with the Jiaxing High School team last May and had been surrounded by admirers．

　　Yu said he did not have a chance to meet Lin in the crowd, but managed to speak with his family．“His father was very supportive of Lin's playing basketball, but his grandmother was not, for fear he would be injured, ” Yu said．

　　Lin may owe his height, 6 feet 3 inches, to his grandmother's family, Yu said．Chen Weiji, the father of Lin's grandmother, was well over 6 feet and all of Chen's children were tall as well, he said．

　　The N．B．A．believes that 300 million people in China play basketball．The retirement last year of Yao Ming took its main Asian draw away from the N．B．A．But Lin's appearance has helped the league remain a hot topic of Chinese online chatter．

　　Children, especially boys, tend to idealize their fathers when they are young．Every little boy wants to grow up to be just like his father, and every little girl thinks her father is the smartest man on the earth．It's not very easy to be a good father, but it's not that difficult either．Children will truly enjoy spending time with their fathers, not just when they are kids, but even when they are adults．

　　Not all children communicate well with their fathers．Communication is often left to mothers, while fathers dispense advice as and when necessary．Don't expect all conversations to centre around the dinner table．Go to your children's bedrooms and talk to them about school, their teachers or their friends．Remember that the conversation cannot be one-sided．When your children open up to you, you also need to open up to them．

　　If your children come home from school feeling upset, go up to them and ask them what is the matter．And if it is something which seems to you to be a silly reason to be upset, don't voice your opinion．It may be silly to you, but to your children it is important enough．So don't wave the topic away by telling them not to bother about such stupid things．Simply discussing their problems with them will help them feel better．

　　Don't shy away from having discussions about your teenage children's love lives．Generally speaking, your children are definitely not going to discuss intimate details with you．Try to let them know that you are relaxed about topics on love．Tell your children how you met your wife．It is perfectly normal for children to go through feelings for the opposite sex as they grow up, and by keeping the topic closed for discussion, you are only shutting them off from discussing their feelings with you．All they will do is turn to their friends．

　　Though in a digital age, college students nowadays are still holding fast to traditional books．According to the National Association of College Stores, digital books make up just under 3％ of textbook sales, although the association expects that share to grow to 10％ to 15％ by 2012 as more titles are made available as e-books．However, three-quarters of the students, who grew up learning from print books, say that they are unwilling to give up the ability to turn over quickly between chapters, write in the edges and highlight passages．

　　The new technology has produced various options for students．College Booksellers, which operates 636 campus bookstores nationwide, is now marketing its new software application, which allows students to read e-textbooks on PCs．The company introduced the free application last summer in hopes of attracting more students to buy its electronic textbooks．"Now the biggest barrier is getting them to try it," said the company’s vice president．

　　But not every textbook is available in digital or rental format．Generally, an e-textbook is cheaper than a used book, though more expensive than a rental．The expense of college textbooks has become a great concern and teachers from over 40 colleges nationwide are encouraged to assign texts that are less expensive, or to offer them free online．As the buy-back price drops greatly and quickly, some professors suggest that the book stores should not have the last say and there should be something for students to decide by themselves．

　　Wisdom teeth are normally the last teeth to appear．This usually happens when people are in their late teen years or early twenties, in other words, when they are older and wiser．

　　Wisdom teeth can grow into place normally and never cause a problem．But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth; they might crowd other teeth．Sometimes they even push sideways through the gums(齿龈)

　　An impacted wisdom tooth is one that fails to completely rise through the gums．Wisdom teeth that only partly break through can leave space for bacteria to enter around the teeth．Infection(感染)is a risk in these cases．

　　Wisdom teeth that are not well lined and become impacted are often removed．The American Dental Association says removal is generally advised when wisdom teeth only partly break through the gums．Removal is also advised if there is a chance that wisdom teeth are poorly lined．The best time to remove is before the teeth cause any problems or pain．Young adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal．

　　But why do we have wisdom teeth if we often need to get them removed? One theory has to do with our diets．Scientists say the diet of ancient humans probably required more chewing teeth．Life was probably a little rougher on the teeth back then, too．So it was good to have extras．

　　Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men．

　　In a survey done for insurer MetLife, 51％ of women said they drive more safely．The evidence is on their side：Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving．"Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding(守法的)drivers, which leads to fewer accidents," the report says．However, not all male drivers share the same opinion．Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39％ claimed male drivers were safer．The findings did back them up on one point：automotive knowledge．The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents．

　　Auto safety unavoidably matters to Money．Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women．In general, women pay about 9％ less for auto insurance than men．A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states．Among individual states, women get the greatest advantage in Wyoming(where they pay 20％ less), South Dakota and Washington, D．C．, where their insurance costs are 16％ lower．

　　"More than 11,900 male drivers died in U．S．traffic accidents in 2009, compared with just under 4,900 women drivers," according to the study．"Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, vs．1.7 deaths for women．"

　　My years at Yale University provide me with some of the most sincere happiness I have ever experienced．The nostalgia, though, results from the thought of leaving this family and moving on to a different period of life．

　　The relationships during my four years here are one of the most unforgettable aspects of my life．Yale has allowed me to create friendships with many that will undoubtedly be brilliant in our future society．Also, I am certain that Yale has offered me the opportunity to learn and share my faith with others．Lastly, the academic education I received here is remarkable．It is such an amazing opportunity to have the dedicated, cooperative and knowledgeable teachers that are present at our school．

　　It seems like just a few days ago when I took my first steps onto campus, and now we seniors are approaching our final steps．The shyness as freshmen has now transformed into confidence and maturity, I still remember walking down the halls, admiring the seniors for their calmness and strength．Looking back, I am sure that my experiences within this family were fantastic．I know that my memories of this school, whether they are the sporting events or the dances, will always be present in nay life．

　　Thus, it is sad to be aware of the end of a happy four years．Leaving Yale will be difficult after all of the great memories I have gained from attending school here．Anyway, it is exciting to realize that as seniors, we are approaching an entirely new life, an entirely new opportunity．As for you underclassmen(大学低年级学生), cherish the moments that you spend on this campus, because they can become some of the most memorable times of your lives．

　　I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn．I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than ＄100, 000 a year．A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially．It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase, “They are one skill away from great wealth．”

　　There is an old saying that goes, “Job means‘ just over broke(破产)' ”．And unfortunately, I would say that the saying applies to millions of people．Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers“ live within their means”．They work and they pay the bills．Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn．

　　When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's?”almost all the students raise their hands．I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald's makes more money than you?”The answer is obvious：McDonald's is excellent at business systems．The reason so many talented people are poor is because they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems．The world is filled with talented poor people．They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger．

　　“Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品质)in the Americans．They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk．Living and competing with all these confident American students, I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor．As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind．Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly．Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all．What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue－this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive．

　　Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it．Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace．But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches．(The course I'm teaching here is Public speaking)．Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program．

　　A cancer-stricken British teenage girl said Thursday she had been moved by messages of support from around the world after writing an online “Bucket List” of things she wanted to do before dying．

　　Alice Pyne, l5, created an Internet blog in which she described her fight against a cancer of the white blood cells．“ I've been fighting cancer for almost four years and now l know that the cancer is gaining on me and it doesn't look like I'm going to win this one,” she wrote．

　　For her list, the teenager took inspiration from the 2007 film “The Bucket List”, in which two terminally ill(患绝症的)men, played by Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, draw up a list of things they wish to do before they die．

　　On her list, at the site www．alicepyne．blogspot．com, she has included making everyone sign up to be a bone marrow donor(骨髓捐赠者), swimming with sharks, meeting boy band Take That and getting a purple iPad computer．

　　Messages of support and offers of help quickly flooded her webpage and it became one of the most talked about subjects on Twitter．

　　“Oh dear and I thought that I was just doing a little blog for a few friends!” she wrote after her site attracted huge attention．“Thank you so much for all your lovely messages to me．”

　　Pyne, who lives with her family in the northwest English town of Ulverston, revealed(透露)the management of Take That had arranged for her to see the band after reading her blog．A group of local lawmakers have also joined forces with the Anthony Nolan blood cancer charity to encourage people to join its stem cell register．
