　　There are some special traditions in Hawaii．People are very friendly and always welcome visitors．They give visitors a lei, a long necklace of beautiful fresh flowers．Men wear bright flowered shirt and women often wear long flowered dresses．There are traditional Chinese, Japanese and Filipino holidays and all the holidays from the United States．They call Hawaii the Aloha State．Aloha means both hello and goodbye．It also means “ I love you”．

　　Usually when people from different countries, races and traditions live together, there are serious problems．There are so many people living in Hawaii, but in general, people have learned to live together in peace．

　　Hawaiians get most of their money from visitors, and most of the visitors come from the mainland and from Japan．There are so many people living in Hawaii now that there are residential areas(住宅区)where there used to be farms．Some of the big sugar and pineapple companies have moved to the Philippines, where they do not have to pay workers as much money．The families of the first people who came from the U．S mainland own the important banks and companies．Japanese are also buying or starting business here．

　　Believe it or not, in the near future people won't just wear a chicken feather suit at Halloween or for fancy dress．Chickens, which have long provided food for dinner, will also be used to make our clothes as well．Last Monday, a report by the University of Nebraska in the US said in the future it should be possible to use chicken feathers and rice straw to make clothes．

　　“All those wasted agriculture products don't have to be wasted anymore, ” researcher Yiqi Yang said．

　　New technology will change these by-products into something similar to wool, linen, or cotton．Because producing synthetic fabrics(合成纤维)causes pollution, scientists wanted to find a cheaper and environmentally friendly replacement．They turned their eyes to the millions of tons of rice straw and chicken feathers that are widely and cheaply available worldwide．Moreover they don't cause pollution like petroleum-based fibers(石油合成纤维)．

　　Chicken feathers are mostly made up of the same kind of protein found in wool．A sweater made from chicken feathers would feel just like a wool sweater．It would be lighter in weight and warmer, too．

　　According to Yang and his team, rice straw, on the other hand, can produce a fabric that looks and feels similar to cotton or linen．The process is also environmentally friendly．The total production cost of rice fiber is about 50 cents per pound, while cotton now sells for about 60 cents a pound．

　　Maybe some day in the future you will wear fabulous clothes like these．

　　It gives me great pleasure today to say a few words in praise of man we will all miss very much．To be honest, I can't imagine what we will do without him when he's gone．

　　Bill Masters almost single–handed built up our sales force in the Houston area and developed the market position that we enjoy today．In only six years, he has brought the firm from a very low fifth position in the area sales to the point where we now outsell all but one of our competitors．Not only have we got 37 per cent of the market under Bill's leadership; we are increasing our share with each passing month．

　　As you know, the company has moved Bill to northern California to work his sales magic in one of this company's most competitive areas．But we know that if anyone can do it, Bill Masters can, and I know you all join me in wishing him the best of luck in his new work．

　　Chrysanthemums(菊花)are to the fall what tulips are to the spring．

　　In ancient China, chrysanthemums(or 'mums’ for short)were first planted thousands of

　　years ago．People chose the chrysanthemum as their Flower for October, a symbol of the rest and ease that followed the season's final harvest．Then they symbolized a scholar in retirement(隐居)and were one of the four noble plants, along with bamboo, the plum flower, and orchid．

　　The Japanese hold the chrysanthemum as a symbol of the sun．They consider the orderly unfolding of its petals to be a symbol of perfection．They also think that a single chrysanthemum petal placed in the bottom of a wine glass encourages a long and healthy life．The Japanese even have a National Chrysanthemum Day on September 9, known as the Festival of Happiness．

　　In the United States during colonial times, its popularity grew such that mums now reign as “Queen of the Fall Flowers．” Mums remain the most widely grown pot plant in the country and the largest commercially produced flowers．Chrysanthemums generally represent cheerfulness and rest．So they are welcomed throughout the British Isles and North America for any occasion, such as football games and parties．In other countries such as Italy, Belgium and Austria, however, their association with the dead makes chrysanthemums acceptable only for funerals and graves．

Copy and impress smart people, the ones who own their stuff．If you want to impress smart people, debt is the last way to go about it．Trying to impress a money-smart person by going into debt is like trying to impress Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps by drowning in a pool．Michael Phelps is impressed by good swimming and a money-smart person by good money management．

　　Some researchers pointed out that a mix of cruelty and stupidity was the reason for the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979．
