　　You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it．You do not need to be strong．But you need to be quick．And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind．

　　First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat．The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail．

　　Let's start with the wind blowing from the behind．This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction．Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat．It should be at a 90°angle(角度)to the boat．Then it will catch the wind best．

　　If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat．In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat．It should be at a 45°angle to the boat．It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap(摆动)．It shouldn't look like on a flagpole．If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down．

　　Sailing into the wind is not possible．If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop．You may want to go in that direction．It is possible, but you can't go in a straight line．You must go first in one direction and then in another．This is called tacking．When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat．

　　Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport．All these words, you can see, have the same root “port”, which comes from the Latin word, meaning “ to carry” or “ to move” from one place to another．And according to the bit at the beginning--- Which we call the prefix(前缀), the meaning changes：“import” means “to carry in ” or “to bring into a country”, “export”, “ex” means “out of”, so this word means “to carry out of a country”, “re” means “back”, so the word “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”, “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another．”

　　Let's look at the following words：supporter, reporter, importer and exporter．You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs．Adding a suffix(后缀)“er” to a verb means a person who does this thing．So supporter means somebody who supports．A reporter is somebody who reports．Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports, and so on．

　　You should always study in the same place．You shouldn't sit in a position that you use for another purpose．For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax．Don't watch TV while you are studying．Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way．Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract(make less concentrated)you．

　　Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface．Position your book at an angle of 30 degrees．

　　Don't try to complete too much in one study period．Finish one thing before beginning another．If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes．

　　All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test．Getting plenty of rest is very important．This means do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan．Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months．

　　Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure．Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration．Eat healthy food too．

　　When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down．Breathe slowly and deeply．Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often．Above all, take no notice of everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention．

　　Culture is like an iceberg(冰川)．Picture in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean．The only part of the iceberg that you see is the tip．You don't see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water．It is easy to forget that it is there．Most of the iceberg is deep within the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep within its people．

　　When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are obvious：You hear another language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent．You see different foods, clothes and sometimes physical characteristics of people．You observe new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and, bowing or kissing on both cheeks as a greeting．These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too difficult to understand．They are visible so they are seen easily and quickly．

　　The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists of assumptions(设想), communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong．The hidden part of culture affects much of a person's way of thinking and communicating．It is the meaning behind his or her verbal(言语的)and nonverbal language．Learning to communicate well with people from another culture involves becoming aware of the hidden part of culture．
