　　Since we are social beings ,the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships．One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力的)conditions．Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties．Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems．People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties．Studies over types of illnesses ,from depression to heart disease ,show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness ,and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely．

　　Social support cushions stress in number of ways．First ,friends ,relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us．Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties．Second．They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them．Third ,we typically find social companionship supportive．Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力)us from our worries and troubles．Finally ,other people may give us instrumental support －money aid ,material resources ,and needed services －that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems．

　　The Corydon Happy Days Festival takes place in Crawford Park ,a place once owned by a family ,the Crawfords．As a place for Corydon baseball games and the Fourth of July Horse Show and Barbecue for many years ,the land was given to the city in the early 1990 s and turned into a park through the efforts of many volunteers and donation．They planted trees and built a walking trail(小径),but needed more money to finish their work．The idea of holding a festival each year to raise money came from a barbecue hosted by Chuck Collins ,a local person ,for the whole town．

　　Later a committee was in charge of the festival ,which was to be called “Happy Days ”,in honor of Kentucky governor and Baseball Commissioner Albert Benjamin．The first festival broke even, but each following year has attracted larger and larger crowds ,and now makes a few earnings．The third festival allowed ＄1,000 to be turned over to improve the park ,Later festivals have provided money to build a new so ftball diamond(垒球场)and more parking spaces．

　　The weekend festival begins on Friday with the Ohio Valley Bank Open House ,where people present are invited to enjoy hotdogs ,popcorn and soft drinks．On Saturday morning ,the Masonic Lodge prepares a pancake and sausage breakfast which attracts local people including many local and state politicians．Other activities include a parade, performances ,basketball games ,a Homemakers Contest ,and so on．The famous Womanless Beauty Contest is popular with men in beautiful women's dresses．Each year the Corydon Happy Days Festival succeeds in its aim in sharing happiness among the Corydon people．

　　It's often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king．And in the office of militant(好战)negativism, the positive workers shine like gold．You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy．This vital key to success is totally within your control．Use it．

　　The Road-This book is a fantastic read and will leave you hanging on edge all the way through it．This book is quite dark, however, and it certainly had some shocking moments throughout．The book is set in a post-apocalyptic(浩劫后的)world where modern life has been destroyed and in which there is no wildlife and a lot of humans have actually turned to cannibalism(同类相食)．This book is fantastic if you enjoy a thrilling read that will leave you on the edge of your seat every few seconds．This certainly isn't a book for the faint of heart．

　　The Theory of Everything by Stephen Hawking-If you haven't read this book yet then you really must．If you’re looking for a non-fiction and highly informative book for your summer then this is the book for you．This book was written by Professor Stephen Hawking and is extremely famous．

　　In 2003, Bethany Hamilton, 13, lost her left arm to a shark attack while surfing off Kauai, Hawaii．A new film, Soul Surfer, is based on the story of how she overcame that to achieve her dream of becoming a professional athlete．

　　Growing up on the “garden isle” of Kauai, Hamilton spent every minute she could riding the waves．She was on the verge of(即将)becoming a top competitor in professional surfing．But while she was practicing at an isolated cove(小湾)，a four-meter-long tiger shark ripped off her left arm．Though her life was saved, nobody could imagine she would ever get back on a surfboard again．

　　The filmmakers used special effects to digitally remove Robb’ s arm．However, no tricks were necessary for the surfing scenes because Hamilton herself did the breathtaking wave riding．

　　Now 21, Hamilton says she hopes audiences find inspiration in the description of the sport she loves．

　　“Not a lot of people know that much about surfing, so I hope they’re educated about it, ” Hamilton says．“And most of all if people are going through a hard time, they could be encouraged and find inspiration to push through those hard times and see that, in my case, so much good has come out of it．”

　　I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves．One January, I officiated(主持)at two funerals for two elderly women．Both died a natural death．At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的)woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today．It's my fault that she died．” At the second home, the son said, “If only I hadn't insisted on her going to Florida, she would be alive today．That long airplane ride was more than she could take．It's my fault．”

　　When things don't turn out as we would like them to, we tend to think that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending．Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty．Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believed that the opposite course, for example, keeping mother at home, would have turned out better．After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

　　There seems to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty．The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense and that there is a reason for everything that happens．

　　The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happens．The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood．A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it．He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks．He cries, and someone comes to attend to him．When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him．Very often, we do not completely give up that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen．
