Pairs has the Eiffel Tower; New York has the Statue of Liberty; and Brussels, the Manneken Pis.

Think of the Belgian capital and, if anything, you think of the small peeing(撒尿)boy-a 60-meter-high bronze figure standing on a block, supplying a constant stream of water of the basin under him.

Some might laugh. But for Jacque Stroobants, the statue is up there with the best of them.

“I'm proud of him.People come from all around the world to see him, ” says 60-year-old Stroobants with a fatherly glance at the little boy.

As the most famous landmark of Brussels, Manneken Pis has a very special place in the heart of Belgians.

The original Manneken Pis dates back to 1388, but the statue tourists see today dates from 1619 when the city built a second one after the original was destroyed.

Many stories go round Manneken Pis.Nobody knows why he was made. One story is that he saved Brussels by putting out the flames of a deadly fire with his well-aimed pis.But the most believable story is that the boy, the son of a wealthy man, was kidnapped(绑架).The father had a statue built in honor of the way his son was found-peeing against a tree.

Perhaps best-known for his naked beauty, the “peeing boy” has also been clothed in some of the finest clothes money can buy.

Stroobants has been changing his clothes for the last 29 years. On average, he has clothes on 300 days a year. And on special days, he pees beer.

A few of the ways he's been dressed are:a football player, Mozart and an army general. Now, he has more than 600 pieces of clothes.

There is no strict charge for those wishing to provide clothes for the little boy.But certain condition must be met.“The clothes cannot include either advertising or political message.” said Stroobants, because they would cheapen the national treasure.

But Manneken Pis is still something local people can make money from-by selling all kinds of souvenirs.

He says the problem with teachers is, “What will a kid learn from someone who chose to become a teacher? ” He reminds the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about teachers:Those who can, do; and those who can't, teach

I decide to bite my tongue instead of biting his and resist the urge to remind the other dinner guests that it's also true what they say about lawyers-that they make money from the misfortune of others.

  "I mean, you’re a teacher, Taylor, " he says to me.“Be honest.What do you make? ”

I wish he hadn't asked me to be honest, because now I have to teach him a lesson.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I can make a C+ feel like a great achievement and an A-feel like a failure.

How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best?

I make parents tremble in fear when I call them:

  I hope I haven't called at a bad time,

I just wanted to talk to you about something Billy said today.

Billy said, “Leave the kid alone.I still cry sometimes, don't you? ”

And it was the noblest act of courage I have ever seen.”

I make parents see their children for who they are and what they can be.

You want to know what I make?

  I make kids wonder.

  I make them question.

  I make them criticize.

  I make them think.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them write, write, write.

And then I make them read.

I teach them to solve math problems that they once thought impossible.

I make them understand that if you have brains then you follow your heart and if someone ever tires to judge you by what you make, you teach them a lesson.

Let me make this simple for you, so you know what I say is true:

I make a great difference! What about you?

A pioneering headteacher is calling for all high schools to follow his head and start classes at 11 am, allowing teenagers two hours extra in bed.

Dr.Paul Kelly, head of Monkeseaton Community High School in North Tyneside, said it would mean the end of sleeping in lessons before lunch, after experiments showed teenagers could have different body clocks from adults and younger children.

Russell Foster, an Oxford professor of neuroscience(神经系统科学), tested the memory of 200 Monkseaton pupils at 9 am and 2 pm using pairs of words, and discovered a 9% improvement in the afternoon.Students correctly identified 51% of word pairs in the latest session, compared with 42% in the morning.Tayler McCullough, 15, one of the test subjects, said the majority of students would welcome the extra hours in bed, “I'm extremely hard to get up in the morning. One or two people like to get to school early, but most of us would be up for going in later.I'm sure it would make a big difference to our learning ability.”

Kelly is adamant that a change of school timetable will have a meaningful effect on exam performance. He wants his school's governors to approve his plan and put the new time-table in place before the opening of Monkseaton's new timetable in place before the opening of Monkseaton's new school building, the most technologically advanced in the country, in September.

Kelly hopes his latest idea will be just as successful.“We have to be practical. But this proves that, by starting later, children's learning improves, as does their health.”

Foster said, “This is preliminary(初步的)data, but what's exciting is that it matches more detailed studies carried out in Canada and the US.Teenagers get up late not because they are lazy but because they are biologically programmed to do so.”

Todd McHugh doesn't think he is a hero, but police say the California teenager probably saved a mother and her two young children from serious injury or death last month.

He pulled them out of their car, stuck on light-rail tracks in Folsom, California, about 90 seconds before a train smashed into it.

McHugh, 17, was northbound on his way to meet friends when the silver car in front of him turned off the road, went into a ditch and jolted(摇晃)to a stop on the tracks.

McHugh jumped out of his vehicle and went to help. The driver, a woman who police say had fallen asleep, was behind the wheel and dazed. Her two daughters aged 7 and 10, were in the back seat, buckled(扣住)in.

McHugh took the woman's hand and helped her from the car.She unbuckled the kids.

Another driver who had pulled over to help shouted that a train was coming, McHugh recalled.

Police said the other man ran along the tracks and tried to wave down the train. It was dark and there was a bend in the tracks. The train operator probably never saw him.

McHugh said the driver applied the brakes, but the train was still going fast when it came up on them.

The woman, her daughters and McHugh took shelter behind his truck as the train smashed into their car, dragging it down the tracks, the teenager said.

The woman's car was destroyed.Officials said the train was damaged. But none of the crew and four passengers were injured.

Police said the outcome could have been far worse: “Had she sat there for another minute or two, she and her daughters could have been in that vehicle when the train struck it, and they could have been severely injured or killed.”

I was giving the class when her giggling drew my attention.Walking over to the young trouble-maker, I asked for the note in her hands.

It was a had-drawn picture of me, teeth blackened, nostrils(鼻孔)upwards, and the words “I'm stupid” coming out of my mouth.I managed to fold up the picture calmly and continue the class. My mind, however, was working angrily.I knew the two most likely suspects for drawing the picture.Maybe it was high time that I taught them a lesson!

Somehow, in the very moment of real hurt and anger, I asked myself very softly, “How can I ever bring good out of this? ”

When there were about six minutes left of the class, I showed the kids the picture. The whole class was silent.I told them there must be a reason behind such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me the reason. Then I let them write silently while I stood sadly in the back of the classroom.

Most of them either blamed the artist or felt sorry. But two notes, from the girls I figured were behind the picture, had a list of issues.I was too mean and too strict.Reading those notes, I realized that where I thought I was driving them to success I was actually driving them away.I had some apologizing to do.

When the kids walked into my classroom the next day, one boy and one girl each handed me a card. The one signed by all the boys expressed sincere regret for the ugly joke. The one from the girls asked for forgiveness.I was extremely surprised. And more than a little shameful.I had my little speech all ready to give to the kids, but they did it before me.

What caused the girl to giggle?

[ ]

A.

The funny look of the teacher.

B.

C.

[ ]

A.

Because the didn't want to stop in the middle of the class.

B.

Because she didn't exactly know who drew it

C.

Because she didn't think it would do any good.

D.

Because the students’ apology removed her anger.

(3)

The main reason for the students’ complaints was that the teacher ________.

[ ]

A.

was too strict with them

B.

didn't give interesting lessons

C.

didn't treat them equally

D.

was not kind to them

(4)

What does the passage mainly tell us?

The US government has started a website, Admongo, to help children think critically about the advertising aimed at them.It claims to provide visitors with an “education” through games and other entertainment.

A cartoon man dressed in old time pilot clothing greets visitors to Admongo."Call me Haiz", he says upon arrival in a rocket ship that opens up with a crazy world inside it.Spacey dance music plays in the background as Haiz tells visitors that they need to learn about advertising.

Its inventors say eight to twelve years old is the age kids develop their critical thinking abilities.Kids that age are also a big market for advertisers.

The idea behind Admongo is to teach children three things:To identify the advertiser. To know what the advertiser is really saying. And to know what the advertisement is trying to get the child to do.

Children learn these things through a video game. They create their own game character. They can choose different skin colors, hair styles, eye and mouth shapes. Then they begin a trip through ad-land, where there are ads on buses and billboards. The players have to find all the marketing in the neighborhood before they can move on to the next level.

The Admongo game takes players inside a home, to the advertising studio and everywhere else ads can be found. It is a complete exploration of the world of marketing.

One such area is food marketing. The Federal Trade Commission(FTC)says it is a big business. The FTC estimates that food, drink and fast-food restaurants spent more than one and a half billion dollars on advertising to young people in 2009.

The FTC says children are important for three reasons. They buy products. They influence parents and caregivers to buy.And they are the future adult buyers of the products.

What is the relationship between violence and sports? Psychologists say that there are many reasons for violence at sports events. One is alcohol. Many fans drink a lot at games. When people drink, they are more likely to do abnormal things.Psychologist Dennis Brock says, “Quiet people become loud.Normally nonviolent people become destructive.”

David Sampson, a sports sociologist, says, “These are often celebratory riots- a large number of very happy people mixed in with large amounts of alcohol. They don't often seem dangerous in the beginning, but things get violent quickly.”

Another reason for violence at sports events is the crowd. When individuals are in a large group of people, they can lose their sense of personal responsibility.Edward Hirt, a social Psychologist, says that research shows that people do things in crowds that they would never do alone.People in crowds feel anonymous - no one knows who they are.Crowds also make people feel powerful. They stop making personal decisions. They just follow the crowd.Social psychologists call this a “mob mentality”.

Dave Zarifis, head of public safety says, “Some people don't even come to celebrate. They want to drink hard and make trouble.Someone does something stupid, and it grows from there. You get a mob mentality.People think it's OK to do almost anything. They think, ‘There are so many of us and not enough of them.'

Social psychologist Dr.Sharon Kennedy says that there are some things officials can do to prevent violence.Making sure that an area is not overcrowded is very important.Officials should also think of games as “big parties.” Then they will prepare differently.Kennedy says that in Great Britain they are controlling the problem with cameras in all the stadiums.“When you know someone is watching, you are much less likely to behave badly.”
