Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)Clothes.People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes.Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform?

Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的).They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.

Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them.Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems.Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also give rise to some practical problems.Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

When you do business online, remember one of the most important factors in online success is list building. No matter what goals you’re seeking with your online activities, building a good contact list is vital for a successful outcome.List building plays a major role in developing good relationships with your site’s customers, and visitors. It can be used to get more sales for your site or business. For these reasons contact building should be high on your list when you’re marketing or promoting on the web.Fortunately, list building is an easy process that any site or webmaster can quickly set up as long as you understand two simple elements. To be really successful, your list building must combine these two key elements.Without these you will probably find building your contact list difficult and slow going. So it is worth your while to fully understand these two factors in your list building.

Value-It should offer important information, quality content, special deals / discounts, and more importantly, it should offer a valuable relationship or connection to an expert in the subject area of the list.

Subscribers(订户)must benefit from joining your list.If you’re building a list, just write down all the benefits someone would receive from joining your site or list, including receiving important information, getting special valuable content, receiving special deals / discounts, getting training videos and getting timely announcements or news.Don’t forget there may also be a psychological reason for joining your list-many people like being part of a group or membership site. It’s human nature.Everybody likes to feel included.

Free whatever you offer-make sure it is Free. The quickest way to build any list is to give away free valuable content, information, videos, reports, e-books, discounts, prizes…everybody loves a free gift.Just make them an offer they can’t refuse. This has more to do with the nature of your gift and the kind of contacts you’re building-giving away free buying guides on how to purchase real estate, fast cars, LCD TVs, laptops…will definitely attract the right“buying customer”.If you’re into selling, you just have to adjust your marketing to combine the free element correctly. In addition, giving away something free is the first step in starting an ongoing relationship with your subscribers. It gets the ball rolling.

认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

(注意:每空只填一个单词。)

Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in critical danger.

  Dodos

The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth’s biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and last one was killed in 1681.

  Rhinos(犀牛)

The Rhino horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat.Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves.Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers(偷猎者).

  The Giant Panda

The future of the Giant Panda is far from certain. As few as 1, 000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals. However, the panda’s distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose(造成)one of the most serious threats to the animals continued existence.

  Whales

Despite the fact that one-third of the world’s oceans have been declared whale reserves, 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered.Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300.Collisions with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.

  Tigers

The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive.Like the Rhino horn, tigers’ bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.

Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants(污染物)can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.

People have paid more attention to the pollution now.It is said that when builders began making housses and offices they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases.

As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it.They discovered a natural pollution control system for building-green plants.Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb or take in the pollutants. In exchange, the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and small organizations on its roots.Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square metres(平方米)of space.Studies of different plants show that each absorbs harmful chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants.Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and healthier place.

阅读下面短文,简要回答问题。

The more money a married woman earns, the less housework she will do regardless of how much her spouse earns, according to a new study.

A researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that big paychecks(薪水)equal less cooking and cleaning in a study of 918 women in double-income families.Married women who made $40,000 or more a year spent nearly one hour less on housework per day than women who earned $10,000 or less, according to the findings based on data(数据)from the National Survey of Families and Households.

“Up to this point, people have thought that the important thing was how much money a woman makes compared to her husband, but the only thing that matters is how much money she earns,”Sanjiv Gupta, the author of the study, said in an interview.

The study, which is published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, showed that for every $7,500 in annual income that a married woman earned, she performed one hour less of housework each week.

Gupta confirmed the connection between money, housework and spousal relationships in a separate study using data on nearly 2,000 couples in the United States and Europe.

The average earnings of American women increased by $6,200 between 1965 and 1995, according to the U.S.Census Bureau(人口普查局).During that time, the amount of time married women spent on weekly chores fell by 14.6 hours.

Since the husband's earnings had no effect on the amount of housework a woman does, the finding suggests that women are using their own money to reduce their housework by doing things such as ordering food from restaurants instead of cooking, and hiring cleaners instead of doing the cleaning themselves, Gupta said.

The world’s climate is changing rapidly.Record heat is becoming commonplace, and natural disasters are becoming more frequent. However, there is a grassroots movement to take direct action against these forces that are rapidly changing our atmosphere. It centers on buying global warming bracelets(手镯)to help stop global warming.

The process of stopping global warming with a bracelet starts with Roots, the company producing and selling the bracelets(www.roots.com).It has an excellent track record of providing products that are environmentally friendly. You will be pleased to hear that the profits from the sales of the bracelets are donated to the nonprofit organization Stop Global Warming Fund, which promotes grassroots movements against global warming. You can be a part of the movement as a buyer to purchase a global warming bracelet and show your support for the climate. You can even buy some extra global warming bracelets to sell at fundraising(筹款的)and activism events to get more people involved.

While a strap of leather around your wrist is not going to literally stop global warming, it plays an important role in helping stop it.For your individual behavior, the bracelet’s constant presence can push you in the right direction. For example, when you are debating whether to walk to the grocery store or drive, seeing the bracelet on your wrist can encourage you to use your feet.In addition to your behavioral compass, the bracelet can help stop global warming by serving as a conversation starter to inform strangers about global warming and grassroots action. Many people are concerned about global warming but have no direction as to what actions to take–something a simple piece of jewelry can provide. This unique bracelet, available in several color combinations, can also serve as a reminder in your daily actions that will affect global warming, such as bringing your cloth bags instead of using the plastic ones at the store.

While it is no secret that operating a cell phone behind the wheel can be dangerous, it is often thought that there is less risk if drivers use a hands-free cell phone.New research shows that driving using a hands-free cell phone is just as risky as using a handheld cell phone. In fact, it is comparable to drunk driving!

Researchers from the University of Utah have found that drivers who use both handheld and hands-free cell phones are as distracted(分心)as drunk drivers.According to the research, drivers who use cell phones are more likely to delay braking and get into accidents.

In the study, 40 participants used the driving simulator(模拟器), PatrolSim, to test four different driving conditions:not distracted, using a handheld cell phone, using a hands-free cell phone, and drunk. The driving simulator followed another car that braked occasionally to test the participant’s reaction levels.During the drunk driving trial, the participants were instructed to drink vodka and orange juice until their blood alcohol level reached 0.08-the minimum level that defines drunk driving in most of the U.S.

The researchers found that the participants who talked on a handheld or hands-free cell phone drove slightly slower, had a 9%slower reaction time when stepping on the brakes, and had a 19%slower reaction time when resuming(恢复)normal speed after braking. And the participants who were drunk hit the brakes only 4 seconds before a collision(碰撞)could occur and hit the brakes with 23%more force.

The study also supports earlier research by the scientists, which found that hands-free cell phones were not less distracting than handheld cell phones. The distraction and danger appear to come not from the technology used but from the conversation itself.

Most scientists are now certain that global warming is taking place.Gases such as carbon dioxide produced by burning of coal, oil, wood, together with industrial pollution, are creating a warm blanket around the earth. This blanket is trapping heat in the atmosphere, and so raising the temperature of the earth.

The evidence for global warming can now be seen in the world’s changing climate statistics. In Europe, eight of the last ten years have seen record high temperature. For northern Europe, this has generally been a change for the better.Gardeners can now even grow tropical plants in England, though London may never see a“White Christmas”again. On the other hand, the countries around the Mediterranean Sea, and those south of the Sahara Desert are receiving even less rain than before. In Sub-Saharan Africa the crops are drying out in the fields and people are dying of starvation. In the Americas, the climate is becoming more extreme-the summers are getting hotter and the storms are becoming more violent. In 1999 the southern United States was struck by a series of destructive hurricanes, while the end of 1999 saw the worst floods ever in Venezuela.Meteorologists expect such trends to continue, and indeed to worsen, if global warming cannot be halted(终止).

In addition to worrying about rising global temperatures and more extreme weather conditions, scientists are closely monitoring sea levels around the world. These are slowly rising, as the northern and southern polar ice-caps start to melt. This will have serious consequences for low-lying countries near the sea, such as the coral islands in the Pacific, and Bangladesh where the River Ganges already floods the delta(三角洲)every year.Already parts of these places are disappearing under the rising tides.
