  Study regularly.

When you get home from school, go over your notes.Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.

The diamond is the hardest natural substance in the world. What causes this superhardness?Pressure and heat are the answers. The pressure has to be close to two million pounds. That’s per square inch.Much heat is required too.Experts say over 5,000 degrees. To make a diamond, one more thing is needed. This is ________.Pressure, heat, and carbon combine. They create a sparkling diamond. The very best are colorless.Pale blue stones─very rare─are high quality too.

Where do most diamonds come from?Over 97 percent come from Africa. The first diamond in Africa was not found by miners.Children found it, in 1866.They were playing in a shallow stream. One picked up “a pretty pebble”.The “pebble” was placed on the mantel of the fireplace. It was soon forgotten.Much later, a guest noticed the sparkle. He urged the farmer to have the stone looked at.He did.He took it to an expert in town. The “pebble” proved to be a diamond worth $2,500.That was a small fortune in those days.To date, the mines in Africa have produced over 1 billion dollars worth of diamonds.

Not all diamonds are found in Africa. Our hemisphere produced diamonds too.Brazil was a big producer in earlier times. The famous gem the Star of the South was found in brazil in 1853.

The gem the President Vargas was found more recently in Brazil. This was in 1938.A poor prospector found the stone. It was in the San Antonio River. It weighed 726.6 carats. The man sold the stone for $10,000 to a local broker. The broker almost immediately resold it.He got about $425,000.What a nice guy!

Men have traveled ever since they first appeared on the earth.

Long ago, they did not travel for pleasure but to find new places where their cattle could feed, or to ________ from their enemies, or to find more favorable climates.

They traveled on foot.Their journeys were long, tiring and often dangerous. They protected themselves with simple weapons, such as wooden sticks or stone clubs, and by lighting fires at night and, above all, keeping together.

Very soon they discovered easier ways of traveling. They rode on the backs of their tamed animals. They made boats out of tree trunks so as to travel across water.

Later they traveled, not for necessity, but for the joy and excitement of seeing and experiencing new things. This is still the main reason why we travel today.

Traveling, of course, has now become a highly-organized business. There are cars and splendid roads, express trains, huge ships and jet planes, all of which make traveling comfortable and safe.

Open Your Eyes And Let's See Who You Are

Inventors have developed a new way to identify people, using a machine that scans their eyeballs.Developed by eyes scan, this new technology takes advantage of the fact that the iris(虹膜)of each person's eye is unique, and remains unchanged throughout a lifetime.

The process will replace ________called retina(视网膜)identification, which compared the pattern of veins(静脉)in the back of the eye.Used to control access to nuclear weapons, retina identification has never caught on with the public because it requires the user to put their eyeball right up against a lens.Iris scanning, on the other hand, works from a distance.

The iris of the eye is photographed from up to one meter away. The patterns of the iris are translated into digital code, and stored in a PC database, along with personal information.Glasses and contact lenses do not interfere with the scanning process, and it takes only a brief moment.

The new technology will be useful for banking and police work, as well as for the Internet economy. Before long, your computer monitor may be equipped with an iris scanner that can identify you when you shop online, thus preventing fraud.

There will be no ID cards to carry in your pocket, and no long numbers to memorize. And eyes will be very difficult to counterfeit.

Did you lose your ID card? No, you didn't.It's still right up there beside your nose.

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, new study findings suggest. In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.

The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a“positive feeling style”can help get rid of the common cold and other illnesses.Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness improving immune(免疫)function and subjective as in happy people being less troubled by a throat ache or runny nose.

“People with a positive feeling style may have different immune responses to the virus,”explained Dr Sheldon Cohen.“And when they do get a cold, they may stop their illness from being more severe.

Since it was founded a year ago, the babysitting pool has become increasingly popular in the United States.More and more mothers have joined it and have benefited from it.What attracts them most is the idea that you pay your babysitter not in cash, but in paper cards. When you join the babysitting pool, you are given thirty cards, which are worth 30-minute babysitting time each. For each half an hour while you are gone, the babysitter gets paid one card.

There are rules regulating this service. You should not watch more than three kids at a time including your own.On big holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, the babysitter should be paid twice as much, which means two cards for every half an hour. When you leave the babysitting pool, you should return all the cards. If you are out of cards, you cannot use money instead. You should have to baby-sit for others to earn enough cards so that you will have them handy when you yourself need a babysitter.

The advantages this mutual-babysitting service has over other kinds of babysitting is that it keeps children in constant touch with one another, and makes life easier for the mothers.Since in most cases, the babysitter is the mother who watches other kids at her own home, it is still possible for her to do her own things while the kids play with each other. In fact most mother babysitters find that their own kids are less of a monster and easier to watch when they are around other playmates. Moreover, since the babysitting pool service does not involve money, it will not be a financial loss to the family.

In the past year, the babysitting pool has helped so many mothers with their work that they all think that it is indeed a good community service worth keeping.

According to a new survey of how Europeans behave while standing in line, the British are only about average at waiting politely in a queue. The French are actually the best at queuing, along with the Hungarians, according to the survey by MSM Marketing Research, a German company.

It's the Germans who just can't stand to wait for anything. They begin sighing loudly and shuffling about noisily if the line does not seem to be moving fast enough for them.Sadly it never moves fast enough for them.

The researchers studied 940 people across Europe. They observed their behaviour secretly as they waited in line to get tickets, to order fast food and to cash a check. The study showed that people who are good at forming queues feel that they move along faster. In Britain, for example, the average wait at a queue is about three and a half minutes. In Germany, where people hate queuing, people actually spend double the time as the English in queues of the same length. They get to the front of the queue without having thought out precisely what they want or without having the correct change. So they waste others' time by asking more questions and fumbling in their wallets.

"Politeness is greatly appreciated while people are standing in line,"said MSM survey expert Patricia Bas.They had asked a person to intentionally break into a queue in Britain to see what the reaction would be.People glared, cleared their throats and sighed loudly. But when the offender said in apologetic tones,"Oh, I'm terribly sorry.I didn't realize there was a queue.Do go before me", the mood in the queue immediately changed to kindliness."People suddenly smiled and said, 'Oh that's all right, one more won't matter' and they actually let the offender get away with it,"Bas said."They may have suspected he was lying, but they still treated him kindly."

Educators are seriously concerned about the high rate of dropouts among the doctor of philosophy students and the loss of talent to a nation in need of PhDs.

According to a report, the dropouts rate was found to be 31%,and in most cases the dropouts, while not completing the PhD requirement, are not only doing well financially, but, are earning as much as those who went on to complete their degrees Researchers say there IS little academic difference between those who fail and those who succeeD.

The increase of the dropout level is thought to be U waste of precious faculty time and a drain on university resources.

Experts said they used to believe that SO many dropped out because they weren't tough or smart enough to complete the research required to get a PhD,and most couldn't stand the long time which,on average, takes six years.

The truth is more complicateD.The possibilities of better paid jobs elsewhere are evident in some areas. The absence of a clear-cut career as a PhD graduate is another and lack of motivation is the principal reason for dropping out.

Nearly 75%of the dropouts said there was no academic reason for their decision, but those who mentioned academic reason cited failure to pass the qualifying examination, uncompleted research and failure to pass language exams.

Some people expressed the opinion that the shortage of highly trained college teachers could be reduced by persuading the dropouts to return to graduate schools to complete the PhDs.But this turned out to be impractical. The same is true with lower requirement and provision of better doctoral advisers for them. One possible way out can be a great increase in funding or prospects of better jobs.
