Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal – or at least many parts of it have. 1 .Ideas about social class – whether a person is “working - class” or “middle - class” – are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.

In the past, the working – class tended to be paid less than middle – class people. The trypical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her "housekeeping", would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting.

The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was-and still is - inclined to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important. 2 .Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity(or the education and training)to make such long-term plans.

3 .In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middle – class supervisors(管理者).Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about "tomorrow".Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑感).In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

4 .They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations. 5 .As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.

A.Nowadays, a great deal has changed

B.Both of these provided him and his family with security

C.As a result, differences in life – styles and attitudes came into existence

D.However, we still have a wide gap between the well – paid and the low - paid

E.In recent years, the working – class people have begun to design long – term plans

F.In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned

G.The changes in both life – styles and attitudes are probably most easily seen amongst younger people

I started to study English by myself when I was about 15 because of Michael Jackson. He's been my idol since 1991, and I really wanted to understand him and his music. 1 I was very patient, and that helped me a lot in the process of learning English by myself.

Actually, I can't describe the techniques I used to learn it, because it was almost automatic for me to start understanding English after a period of hard work trying to translate texts, dialogues and songs. 2

One thing that I can say is that I started learning English through comparing patterns and observing the language structure, comparing it to Portuguese and trying to memorize rules. 3 Another thing that helped me a lot is the fact that I would spend hours studying the uses, tenses, etc.of the words I could notice.

4 It was the hardest part of the process for me, because the only source I had was music, although I used a pronunciation dictionary, too.

5 Later on I entered UFMG and really started studying English.Today I'm a teacher at an English Course, and I really enjoy it, because I can improve my English each day.

A.Despite the difficulty, I could learn everything well.

B.So I really can't say exactly how I've achieved proficiency(熟练).

C.With the help of my teacher, I learned pronunciation well.

D.So I can say that a strong will is the key to my success.

E.After having a large vocabulary, I started working on pronunciation.

F.And I used to make lists of words in order to memorize them and their meanings.

G.I used to use a dictionary to find the meaning of each word in songs written by him.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before.

But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. 1 Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.

For anything you're about to send, ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person's face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 2

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 3 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it.Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

4 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it.If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything.Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything.

Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. 5 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

A.Everyone was new to the network once.

B.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

C.It's natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

F.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

Direction:Read the following passage.Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Many young people in the United States never finish high school.Exactly how many drop out is another problem.Recent studies of dropout rates have had conflicting results.

For one thing, schools measure their dropout rates differently. Some researchers say that about 15 to 20 percent of public school students do not complete their education. But many other experts and policymakers believe that for the past twenty years, the dropout rate has been around 30 percent. For Latino and black students, the numbers are even higher.Researchers say almost half of them leave school.

At the same time, almost half the states let students leave school before the age of 18 without informing their parents.Recent studies have shown that the majority of students who drop out do not do it because they are always failing. Many are bored with their classes or feel disconnected from their school and teachers. Some students feel that educators place low expectations on them.Teen pregnancies also add to the dropout problem.

Finding a good job without a high school education is more and more difficult.A Northeastern University study in 2002 found that almost half of all dropouts aged from 16 to 24 did not have a job.The lack of a high school education can also lead to other problems. An estimated two-thirds of prisoners in the United States dropped out of high school.

During the past twenty years, there have been efforts to increase graduation rates through education reforms. Some communities are working on dropout prevention programs, including different high schools to meet special needs. Some programs, for example, provide free transportation and childcare to help young mothers and fathers finish school.

Experts suggest "early warning systems" to help find young schoolchildren at risk of dropping out of high school. They say schools also need to have more contact with parents, especially if their children are missing school often.
