A growing number of people in London are jumping on their bike to enjoy the benefits of both saving money on public transport and keeping fit.

In a city where buses and trains are expensive and where it can cost eight pounds a day to drive a car, there are plenty of arguments in favor of cycling.

“If you have less than 15 kilometers to travel, the quickest way to get to where you are going is by bike,” said Angus, a Londoner who has used his trusty two-wheeled friend for several years.

1 In the centre of the capital the growth rate is even higher, up 100 percent on the major roads, with 119,000 journeys being made every week last year compared with 59,000 in 2001,according to Transport for London.

2 Frederic Laforge, a 41-year-old Frenchman living in the city, happily pedals(-gr'~)204 2 Frederic Laforge, a 41-year-old Frenchman living in the city, happily pedals(骑车)20 kilos every day to go to work.

Laforge said, “Cars take care; there are far fewer motorbikes and scooters(滑板车)in London than in Paris and, except in the centre, the traffic is lighter. 3

4 Just two percent of all trips are done by bike compared with 28 percent in Amsterdam, 20 percent in Copenhagen, 12 percent in Munich and five percent in Berlin.

There are some 2.6 million subway journeys a day and 5 million bus trips. 5

London is making a big effort to encourage people to cycle. There are already 500 kilos of bicycle routes, typically marked out by a painted line in the road and the goal is to have more than 900 kilos by 2009-2010.

A.With sunny, hot weather in London at the moment, cyclists are everywhere.

B.Adding to the attraction of bikes, people drive more slowly

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在图表的空格里填上最恰当的单词(每空一词)。

We live in a noisy world.Young and old alike are troubled by sounds over which we may have little or no control:car and house alarms, motorcycles, loudspeakers, even movie previews.

We attend rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports events at which the music is so loud you can hardly hear the person sitting next to you.At home, televisions, stereos and computer games are often turned up so loud that listeners cannot hear a doorbell or a telephone.

As if environmental noise were not enough, now we surround children with noisy toys and personal listening devices that can permanently damage their hearing.A series of studies conducted in 2002 indicated that even moderate(缓和的)background noise can interfere with how they learn language. In fact, children in classrooms on the noisy side of a school had lower reading scores than those whose classes were on the quiet side.

Noise-induced(噪音诱发的)hearing loss can come about in two ways:from a brief exposure to a very loud noise or from consistent(不断的)exposure to moderate-level noise. Thus, there is much concern about the lasting effects of MP3 players that are turned up loud enough to block out surrounding sound, like street noise. An MP3 player at maximum volume produces about 105 decibels(分贝)-100 times as severe as 85 decibels, where hearing damage begins.

So, before buying noisemaking toys, parents would do well to listen to how loud they are.If the item comes with a volume control, monitor its use to make sure it is kept near the lowest level.Consider returning gifts that make loud noises, or disable the noise-making function.Children who play computer games and stereo equipment should be warned to keep the volume down. Most iPods have a control that allows parents to set a maximum volume.

Don’t take children to loud action movies. If you do go and the sound seems deafening, ask the management to turn down the volume or insist on your money back.

The League for the Hard of Hearing urges parents to encourage children to take part in quiet activities, like reading, doing puzzles, making things with construction toys, playing educational computer games, drawing and painting, and visiting libraries and museums.

语法填空

The holiday’s upon us.After months of study, you have some time to yourself. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, ‘Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and 1 media that offer a lot more 2 (colour)programs.Books are history!”

But don’t be fooled. There’s still a lot to be said for reading and reading as widely as possible.

One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful collection 3 words and expressions, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course.Believe me, it’s far easier to get new English words and expressions from a book or article 4 it is from the TV or the Internet.

But an even more important point is 5 books give you something that modern media simply can not:The webpage is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible.

Though “easy” may be welcome, 6 (luck)it’s of little use for any long-time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there’s still no substitute(替代品)for a book.

But perhaps the best single reason is that simply 7 (choose)what you read and doing it by yourself 8 (mean)that it’s something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It’s hard work, 9 while you are reading, you’ll find that what once 10 (seem)like a duty is now a pleasure.
