Homesickness at college

The thought of college life is quite exciting for students as they taste independence for the first time at college.Their hard work and effort paid off after all.Though college life brings lots of dreams and expectations for students, most of them soon start feeling homesick. 1 But change is a part of life and dealing with change helps us to grow.In the same way, homesickness at college is a brief experience which goes away once students start adjusting in their new environment.

2 Some students may turn to alcohol and drugs. So it is important that students who experience homesickness at college know about how to deal with it.Students should understand that rather than constantly thinking of their hometown, it is better to see it as a challenge and try to defeat it.Though it is not a difficult task, the time that will take each person to deal with homesickness at college will be different according to their attitude and personality. 3 You can do that, too.

Remember overcoming homesickness is accepting what you are experiencing. Many students think that being homesick is childish and undeveloped feeling and try to cover it up by acting cool or showing that they are very busy. 4 Besides, even their classmates will be going through the same emotions and feelings.Instead of trying to make them understand that they are totally fine after shifting to the new school, going through their emotions and thoughts about life at home for a day or two will be a better choice. 5

A.Homesickness helps students build up a better understanding of life.

B.Homesickness leads to dangerous results if not solved properly.

C.But they don't realize that homesickness is common to people of all ages.

D.You may miss your parents as you leave home for the first time.

    1

If your complaint is immediate, suppose you got the wrong order at a restaurant, make a polite but firm request to see the manager. When the manager comes, ask his or her name. And then state your problem and what you expect to have done about it.

  Be polite! 2

But also be firm in making your complaint.

3 This doesn't mean to put on airs and say “do you know who I am? ” What it means is that people are often treated the way they expect to be treated. If you act like someone who expects a fair request to be granted, chances are that it will be granted

4 You are speaking to a voice coming from someone you cannot see.So you can't tell how the person on the line is reacting. It is easy for that person to give you the run-around.

5 If your complaint doesn't require an immediate response, it often helps to complain by letter. If you have an appliance that doesn't work, send a letter to the store that sold it.Be business-like and stick to the point.Don’ t spend a paragraph on how your uncle John tried to fix the problem and couldn't.

A.Shouting or acting rude will get you nowhere.

B.Complaining in person or by letter is generally more effective.

C.The worst way to complain is over the telephone.

D.Telephone complaint is never efficient.

E.The way to complain is to act business-like and important.

F.Besides, act important.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。

West Point is a college for future army officers. It has more than four thousand students, called cadets(士官生).The school is located about eighty kilometers north of New York City.

West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States.General George Washington built a fort(要塞)there during the Revolutionary War to protect the Hudson River from the British. He moved his headquarters to West Point in seventeen seventy-nine in the middle of the war.

In eighteen hundred and two, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation(立法)to establish the military academy. The education centered on civil engineering.West Point graduates designed many roads, bridges, harbors and railways for the young nation.

Today, math and science are still a large part of the education. But cadets can choose from almost fifty areas of study. If cadets major in the humanities(人文学科), they must have an engineering minor(副科).

Not all the young men and women at West Point are American. This year, fifty-eight are from other countries.Up to sixty cadets can be international students.

International students are chosen by their governments. They must satisfy physical and educational requirements and do well in the Test of English as a Foreign Language. After graduation, they return home to serve in their nation's armed forces.Other services besides the Army also accept foreign students at their academies.

Major Joe Sowers, a West Point public affairs officer, says information is available through American embassies. He says the presence of international students at West Point serves a purpose for the Army.He says:“Cultural understanding, cultural awareness is essential for a modern-day officer. Now we have cadets from Panama and cadets from African countries, which doesn't necessarily increase your knowledge on how to interact in Iraq or Afghanistan. At least not specifics, anyway. But you’ve begun the process of understanding that the world is bigger than your hometown and West Point and the United States of America. But I think the big reward is at the individual cadet level, establishing relationships with those who come from much, much different backgrounds.”

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后各题的空格里填上适当的单词或短语。注意:每空不超过3个单词。

Each year there is an increasing number of cars as millions of new cars are produced in America.Americans will not live without cars! However, some have realized the serious problem of air pollution by cars.It is necessary to find ways to solve the problem of air pollution.

One way to clean the air is to build a new kind of clean car. That's what several of the large car factories are trying to do.But to build a clean car is easier said than done.Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else.Engineers are now working on it.Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model for us.

To prevent the world being polluted by cars, Americans have to make some changes in the way of their life. They have to cut down on the number of their cars and are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. But this change does not come easily. Many workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. And the problem of their pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

Americans may live a happy but sad life for a long time because of the car problem.

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后各小题的空格里填上适当的单词或短语。注意:每空不超过3个单词。

We’ve all been hurt by another person at one time or another. This pain causes problems. It not only causes us to be unhappy, but can ruin relationships, distract(使分心)us from work and family and other important things, make us unwilling to open up new things.

We need to learn to let go.We need to be able to forgive, so we can move on and be happy.Forgiveness does not mean you erase(忘却;抹去)the past, or forget what has happened. All it means is that you are letting go of the anger and pain, and moving on to a better place.

It's not easy, but you can learn to do it.

Think about the advantages and disadvantages.Think of all the problems this pain causes you, and realize you need to change. Then think of the benefits of forgiveness——how it will make you happier, free you from the past and the pain, and improve your relationships and life in general.

Try to put yourself in that person's situation.Try to understand why the person did what he did. What could he have felt as he did it, and what did he feel afterward? How does he feel now? You aren't saying what he did is right, but are trying to understand instead.

Understand your responsibility.Try to figure out how you could have been partly responsible for what happened. This isn't to say you’re taking all the blame, or taking responsibility away from the other person, but to realize that we are not victims(受害者)but participants in life.

Allow peace to enter your life.As you focus on the present, try focusing on your breathing.Imagine each breath going out is the pain and the past, and imagine each breath coming in is peace, entering you and filling you up.

根据短文内容,从下框A-F选项中选出能概括每段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。

A.People from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature.

B.Different values are against each other.

C.Culture differences can cause serious problems.

D.Talk and silence can be culturally different.

E.Relationship building is important in different cultures.

F.Understanding people from different culture is not easy.

    1

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. They may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

    2

Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work, it 1s necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries-like the UK or France-people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.

    3

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

    4

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

    5

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural(多元文化的)environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

根据短文内容,从下框的A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。

Personally, patience is something I've been practicing for a long time. While I often fail, I believe I've progressed over the years, and things that used to get me bothered now just float past me.I still get upset, of course, but not nearly as much as I used to.Here are some tips that might help you become more patient:

    1

This is the first strategy(策略), if you have real problems with patience:start by simply keeping a record on a little sheet of paper every time you lose your patience. This is one of the most effective and important methods for controlling an impulse(冲动)by learning to become more aware of it.Once you become aware of your impulses, you can work out an alternative reaction.

    2

As you become more aware of losing your patience, pay close attention to the things that cause you to lose that patience. Is it when your coworker(同事)does something particularly annoying? When your spouse(配偶)leaves dirty dishes unwashed? When your child doesn't clean up his/her mess? Certain causes will happen more frequently than others-these are the things you should focus on the most.

    3

This one really works. When you first start to lose your patience, take a deep breath, and breathe out slowly. Then take another. And another. These three breaths will often help you.Count slowly to 10(you can do this in your head). When you're done, most of the impulse to yell or do something out of frustration will have gone away.

    4

Don't try to become very patient overnight. It won't happen.Start with something small and manageable.Look for a trigger that only causes mild impatience within you-not something that gets your blood boiling. Then focus on this, and forget the other triggers for now.Work on controlling your temper for that one trigger. If you can get this one under control, use what you have learned to focus on the next small trigger. One at a time, and with patience, you'll get there.

    5

Often it's best just to walk away for a few minutes.Take a break from the situation, just for 5-10 minutes, let yourself calm down, plan out your words and actions and solutions, and then come back calmly.Sometimes, we tend to get upset over little things. In the long run, these things tend not to matter, but in the heat of the moment, we might forget this.
