Life is filled with challenges. As we get older we     realize that those challenges are the very things that     us and make us who we are. It is the same with the challenges that come with    .
When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two    . We can try to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing     the challenge isn't worth the      and call it quits. Although there are certainly      when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most     all that is needed is      and communication.
When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how      or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to      it and work it through instead of running away from it. Communication is making a      for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong.     you can say to a friend, "I got my feeling hurt,"      "You hurt my feelings," you are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.
In dealing with the many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for      they are: small hurdles you need to jump or      on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is      to get over, and hurt only      to make us stronger. It is all part of growing up, it      to everyone, and some day you will     all of this and say, "Hard as it was, it made me who I am today. And that is a good thing."

We often talk about ourselves as if we have permanent genetic defects(缺陷) that can never be changed. “I’m impatient.” “I’m always behind.” “I always put things     !” You’ve surely heard them. Maybe you’ve used them to describe     .
These comments may come from stories about us that have been      for years—often from    childhood. These stories may have no     in fact. But they can set low expectations for us. As a child, my mother said to me, “Marshall, you have no mechanical （操作机械的） skills, and you will never have any mechanical skills for the rest of your life. ” How did these expectations      my development? I was never      to work on cars or be around     . When I was 18, I took the US Army’s Mechanical Aptitude Test. My scores were in the bottom for the entire nation!
Six years later,    , I was at California University, working on my doctor’s degree. One of my professors, Dr. Bob Tannbaum, asked me to write down things I did well and things I couldn’t do. For my strong points, I      down, “research, writing, analysis, and speaking. ” For the      , I wrote, “I have no mechanical skills. ”
Bob asked me how I knew I had no mechanical skills. I explained my life      and told him about my      performance on the Army test. Bob then asked, “     is it that you can solve       mathematical problems, but you can’t solve easy mechanical problems?”
Suddenly I realized that I didn’t      from some sort of genetic defect. I was just living out expectations that I had chosen to     . At that point, it wasn’t just my family and friends who had been      my belief that I was mechanically hopeless. And it wasn’t just the Army test, either. I was the one who kept telling myself, “You can’t do this!” I realized that as long as I kept saying that, it was going to remain true.     , if we don’t treat ourselves as if we have genetic defects that we can never get over, we can do well in almost      we choose.

Homelessness is a huge problem all over the world. It’s said that each day there are about one million people     on the streets in the US. It is a serious problem which should be     effectively(有效地).
There are     main reasons for people leaving their homes: poverty and less affordable houses     bad economic conditions. Living without a home     people main targets of violence activities and these homeless people have to face the following    .
They have to move    , carrying their belongings, which makes     difficult to help them. They have limited     to bathrooms and restrooms and are forced to live in dirty conditions, making them easy to be attacked by    . They have limited access to health-care facilities in case of emergency(紧急情况), and     no access to education as they have no money. They are often badly treated by society,     makes them unfriendly, often ending up being involved(被卷入) in activities connected with crime like selling drugs or guns.
Homelessness is not     that happened suddenly --- it has been in the country for    . The society usually     those living on the street to be mentally(精神上) ill sometimes. This belief is partially true. Most of them are     people just like you and me.
The government is doing     it can to help but it is not enough, so the ordinary citizens have to help     it’s possible. There are various organizations, such as charity organizations that are working all the time to help them and the united efforts have helped     of people return to their normal lifestyle. However, there is still a long way to go     a better situation is created for all the homeless.

It was a busy morning about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for an appointment at 9:30. The nurse had him take a       in the waiting area,     him it would be at least 40 minutes      someone would be able to see him. I saw him     his watch and decided, since I was     busy ---my patient didn’t     at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment. The gentleman said no and told me that he      to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his     . He told me she had been       for a while and she had a special disease. I asked if she would be      if he was a bit late. He replied that she      knew who he was, and that she had not been able to     him for five years. I was      , and asked him, “And you     go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”  He smiled and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back      as he left.
Now I      that in marriages, true love is     of all that is.  The happiest people don’t      have the best of everything; They just      the best use of everything they have.      isn’t about how to live through the storm,  but how to dance in the rain.

I was invited to attend a presentation at the Kentucky School. That evening I found gratitude had amazing      to change our attitude…and our life.
The young musician Mr. Patrick was      onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the keys as he      beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was wonderful. But what shocked me most was his      smile.
Patrick was born with no eyes and an illness in the legs, which     him lame for life. However, as a child, he was     with artificial eyes and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first    , he discovered the piano. When his mom hit any note on the piano, and within one or two     , he’d get it. By his second birthday, he was playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. His father was    . “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.”
When Patrick was at the University of Louisville, his father     classes with him. He was also a part of the 214-member marching band! He was a blind, wheelchair-bound trumpet player; and he and his father did it together. His father     the night shift（夜班）in order to accompany his daytime band practice. Patrick says, “My dad’s my    .”
But even more than his     musical talent, it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that  _   my soul. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how   _   he was with a great father. When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and     for over five minutes.
We all face misfortune in our lives.    ，it’s not the hardship but how we     to it that will determine the joy and happiness in our lives. During     times, do we spend too much time feeling     for ourselves, or can we, with gratitude, learn how to dance in the rain?

Joy in the journey
If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. For often, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.
Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to      . “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “We plan to dig a hole all the way through the     !” one of the brothers volunteered      .
The older boys began to     , telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was     . After a long silence, one of the       picked up a jar full of spiders, worms and many other kinds of insects. He       the lid and showed the wonderful      to the scoffing（嘲笑的）visitors. Then he said quietly and     , “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look at what we have found       the way!”
Their goal was far too ambitious, but it did cause them to dig. And that is       a goal is for — to cause us to move in the      we have chosen, in other words, to keep us      ! But not every goal will be fully      . Not every job will end      . Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. Not every dream will be      . But when you fall       of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things       my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging       life is lived. And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly       .

The Town of Pressure and the Town of Pleasure were neighbors but had nothing in common. Residents built walls to       influence from the other town.
In Pressure,       struggled to be the very best. When women gave birth, they would       to have the baby with the loudest cry. There was violent competition in every aspect of life. Because      was the index (指数) of success, people were       busy making money, with       for relaxation. Some young people couldn’t bear the intensity and resorted to drink or drugs to escape.
_   , over in Pleasure, the motto was “As long as you like it, do it.” People grew up without       and      do anything they liked. Children played computer games day and night. At school, teachers didn’t _   whether students showed up or not. Workers might sit around the office       sipping coffee and doing nothing.       the lack of regulations, nobody worried about losing their jobs. It was       that mattered. No one had the       thought of moving forward, either for themselves or for the town. The computers they used were       models from Pressure.
Some of the young were addicted to       because of the meaninglessness of their lives. Then, people in the two towns began asking themselves, “What is      for?” But, just before life in the two towns completely      , there came a saint – Mr. Reason. He went from door to door, talking with people and giving advice. People in Pressure learnt to be       with what they had, while people in Pleasure began to make plans. They      the walls between them and built a road to connect the two. The towns’ people came to realize the truth—there is no space between Pressure and Pleasure if they don’t go to extremes.

There was a temple, in front of  which stood an ancient banyan ( 菩提树 ). One ____
morning, a monk got up to____the courtyard and noticed the fallen leaves were everywhere. He couldn’t help worrying and stared at the tree to____. Suddenly he dropped the broom and rushed to his master’s room. He knocked at the door to request for____.
When the master caught sight of his worried____，he thought something must have taken place. He asked with ____,“Why are you in a panic？”
The young monk was full of____and questioned，“Master, you persuade us to struggle to____our moral character and grasp the truth. However, even though I learn them well, it is hard to avoid____. Till then, aren't we just like the leaves in autumn or the deadwood in winter? And we will be buried by a handful of soil？”

Facing the dancing leaves and____they will be in bloom, you need to be optimistic.  There are always some miseries which may____you when you are unprepared, but we don't need to worry for the____of this day.

My family and I used to live in Belgium, and, to me, life was great. Most of my relatives and friends lived there, so there was never a      of aunts to spoil me or children to play with me.
My father is a journalist,       there wasn't much work for him in Belgium at that time. When I was eight, he        he'd found a good job in London and that we were going to move there.  I was      - I didn't realize I was leaving my friends behind and throwing myself into a different world. The excitement soon      after we moved there.
       our arrival in London, I had to start a new school and learn a  new      . I didn't know things in fashion, either. For the       six months I had extra lessons to  learn English. This       with cards and progressed towards books. I'm a      learner ,so I soon caught up. It was fitting in with other       in my school that took a bit more work.
For the first two years or so I was an outsider, no matter how much I tried to      . This made me      and sensitive - a perfect target for bullies. Thankfully, some of my classmates began to     me, and they became a great help as they helped me to      the things that made me a "foreigner".  By the time I        primary school,  most people couldn't believe I had moved to England only four years before. I was        able to fit in, grasp the language and adapt to the culture.
Trying to fit in is my      to anyone who has just moved from the homeland. or is planning to. "Fitting in" doesn't mean completely       yourself to be someone else ,but it does mean trying to  learn the         culture and language, ,which will make your life easier.

Every night, my mother would come to my room, lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead．
I don't remember when it first started     me --her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did make me annoyed, for they felt work - worn and     against my young skin．Finally, one night, I shouted at her: “Don' t do that any more --your      are too rough！” She didn’t say anything in    ．But never again did my mother close out my day with that     expression of her love．
Time after time, with the     years, my thoughts returned to that night．I'm not a little girl any more．Mom is in her mid - seventies, and those hands I     thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my         
Now, my own children are   . Mom no longer has Dad. It was late on that Thanksgiving Eve, as I went to sleep in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand     before stealing across my face to brush the     from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so      touched my brow．In my    , thousands of times, I     the night my young voice complained.     Mom's hand in my hand, I said how     I was for that night. I thought she'd remember, as I did,     Mom didn't know what I was talking about. She had forgotten — and      —long ago.
That night, I fell asleep with a new     for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the     I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found．
