A
In this age of
Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of
mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my
8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short
stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a
competition she won last year.
As a writer I know about winning
contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story
only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure
of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she
doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent.
So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.
A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked
her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the
story of an angel going to first grade.”
I had just spent weeks correcting
her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced
writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for
characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful
angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little
girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her
contest into my contest without even realizing it.
Staying back and giving kids
space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm
animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact
that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s
experience.
While stepping back was difficult
for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more
steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to
help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room
to experiment, grow and find their own voices.
56. What do we learn from the first paragraph?
A. A lot of distractions
compete for children’s time nowadays.
B. Children do find lots of
fun in many mindless activities.
C. Rebecca is much too occupied
to enjoy her leisure time.
D. Rebecca draws on a lot of online
materials for her writing.
57. What did the author say about her own writing experience?
A. She was constantly under
pressure of writing more.
B. Most of her stories had
been rejected by publishers.
C. She did not quite live up
to her reputation as a writer.
D. Her way to success was
full of pains and frustrations.
58. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?
A. She had won a prize in
the previous contest.
B. She wanted to share her
stories with readers.
C. She was sure of winning
with her mother’s help.
D. She believed she
possessed real talent for writing.
59. The author took great pains to refine her daughter’s stories because
________.
A. she wanted to help
Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writer
B. she was afraid Rebecca’s
imagination might run wild while writing
C. she did not want to
disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much
D. she believed she had the
knowledge and experience to offer guidance
60. What’s the author’s advice for parents?
A. Children should be given
every chance to voice their opinions.
B. Parents should keep an
eye on the activities their kids engage in.
C. Children should be
allowed freedom to grow through experience.
D. A writing career, though
attractive, is not for every child to pursue.

Eating kangaroos instead of cattle and sheep has been given a scientific stamp of approval by the government’s top climate change adviser,
The belch(嗳气) of millions of farm animals is a major contributor to Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, notes professor Ross Garnaut in a major report to the government on global warming.
Kangaroos, on the other hand, breathe out little amounts of methane(甲烷) gas.
If farmers were included in a system requiring industry to buy permits for the gas they produce, the cost of meat would rise and could lead to a change in eating habits, says Garnaut.
“For most of
“It could again become important. However, there are some significant barriers to this change, including livestock and farm management issues, consumer resistance and the gradual nature of change in food tastes.”
Garnaut cites a study looking at the potential for
kangaroos to replace sheep and cattle for meat production in
The study concludes that by 2020, beef cattle and sheep numbers could be reduced by seven million and 36 million respectively, allowing for an increase in kangaroo numbers from 34 million now to 240 million by 2020.
This would be more than enough to replace the lost lamb and beef production, and kangaroo meat would become more profitable than cattle and sheep as the price of emissions permits increased.
Garnaut’s report says livestock, mainly cattle and sheep, are responsible for some 67% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
Despite being the national animal and appearing on the Australian coat of arms, kangaroos are slaughtered in the wild each year to control their numbers and much of the meat is used for pet food.
The idea of farming them for human consumption is controversial, but many Australians already eat kangaroo meat.
61.Which of the following statements is true about kangaroos?
A. Kangaroos have appeared on a scientific stamp.
B. Kangaroos breathe out air containing little methane gas.
C. Kangaroos are the main source of meat for Australians.

A. How the farms are run. B. Whether consumers like the new idea.
C. the price of the kangaroo meat D. Whether consumers become used to eating the meat.
63.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. there are more cattle and sheep than kangaroos now
B. there were more kangaroos in the past than now
C. people will like to eat kangaroo meat by 2020.
D. greenhouse gas will be reduced by 2020
64. The underlined word “controversial” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. the same B. arguable C. negative D. positive
65.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Eating kangaroos may reduce global warming.
B. People aren’t willing to eat kangaroo meat.
C. People are called on to eat kangaroo meat.
D. Kangaroos pollute the environment less than other animals.

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between
teaching and learning , they will continue to undertake to do for children that
which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing
reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about
reading.
Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity. It can be seen and observed.
Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private , for learning is an occupation of the mind ,and that process is not open to public scrutiny.
If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable , what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”
When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.
66.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ________.
A. it is one of the most difficult school courses
B. students spend endless hours in reading
C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance
D. too much time is spent in teaching about reading
67.The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.
A. teachers can improve conditions at school for the students
B. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading
C. teachers can devise the most efficient system for reading
D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable
68.The underlined word“ scrutiny” most probably means“________”.
A. inquiry B. observation C. control D. suspicion
69.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ________.
A. children become highly motivated
B. teacher and learner roles are interchangeable
C. teaching helps children in the search for knowledge
D. reading enriches children’s experience
70.The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read
B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible
C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught
D. reading is more complicated that generally believed
D
It is hard to track the blue whale, the ocean’s largest creature, which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult and visual sightings are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior.
So biologists were delighted early this year when, with the help of the Navy, they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days, monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater listening devices spanning the oceans.
Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential enemies.
Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption for the first time and that they plan similar studies.
Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures.
The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second―slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important different layers(层面) of ocean water can act as channels for sounds focusing them in the same way a stethoscope(听诊器) does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean especially low-frequency ones, can often travel thousands of miles.

Barack Obama is prepared to become president, supported by enormous public goodwill.
The Bush era, with all its disasters and blunders, is over. Obama has arrived in Washington, DC, and is ready to swear the oath(誓词) of office on Lincoln's own Bible at noon on Tuesday January 20th. Then Americans will start to see what kind of a president they have chosen as the 44th occupant of the office.
To a surprising degree they like to give him the benefit of any possible doubt. Mr Obama's polling numbers have reached sky-high levels.______________, 80% of people now have a positive impression of Mr Obama, a figure that has been steadily increasing since his election in November. It is the highest figure recorded for an incoming president for 30 years, according to another poll. It compares well even with George Bush's 90% patriotism-fuelled rating in the wake of the September 11th attacks.
Mr Obama's supporting rate seems the more remarkable given the large proportion of people who say that they do not expect to see quick results. Fully two-thirds of them do not expect to see great improvements in the economy over the next two years, and more than half doubt there will be many changes on health-care reform, or an end to the war in Iraq, in that time. Yet these were Mr Obama's three main campaign promises. On the other hand, 61% of them expect the country to be in better shape in five years' time, which means a fairly long honeymoon period.
