It might have been a really bad stressed day, feeling trapped inside by the cold and snow which surrounded us. My husband was the first to shift his consciousness. He announced that he was going outside to build a giant snowman..
At first he stood alone, piling amounts of snow. Then I joined him. Soon a neighbour also joined my husband in embracing(欣然接受) the opportunity the winter presented. In the end we all stood back and were surprised at what we had created.
People drove by and smiled. Some even stopped to enjoyed the snowman’s existence. The spirit that went into creating the snowman seemed to catch on and we all enjoyed it while the cold temperatures allowed.
With the passing of time, the spring made its way back into our yard and the snowman changed form considerably. One night, as I prepared for the start of another week, I decided to check my e-mail before going to bed. I found a curious message even though I did not recognize who sent it. The words it contained melted my heart.
The e-mail said, “ Your neighbor looks on in disbelief! I am sure your people are enjoying the sounds and smells, along with sights of spring. The energy displayed in Mr. Snowman or Ms. is filled with vigor(活力) and joyous energy. You and your family keep it up, as this is what the world needs now. More power to you and your loved ones, keep sharing with the world around”.
Perhaps it was more than a snowman we built that day. Our circumstances(环境)will turn out to be what we make of them. The possibilities are endless and the choice is ours.

No one can avoid being influenced by advertisements. Much as we may pride ourselves on our good taste, we are no longer free to choose the things we want, for advertising exerts(施加) some influence on us. In their efforts to persuade us to buy this or that product, advertisers have made a close study of human nature and have classified(分类) all our little weaknesses.
Advertisers discovered years ago that all of us love to get something for nothing. An advertisement which begins with the magic word FREE can rarely(很少) go wrong. These days, advertisers not only offer free samples, but free cars, free houses, and free trips round the world as well. They design hundreds of competitions which will enable us to win huge sums of money. Radio and television have made it possible for advertisers to draw the attention of millions of people in this way.
During a radio programme, a company of biscuit manufacturers once asked listeners to bake biscuits and send them to their factory. They offered to pay $10 a pound for the biggest biscuit baked by a listener. The response to this competition was active. Before long, biscuits of all shapes and sizes began arriving at the factory. One lady brought in a biscuit on a wheelbarrow. It weighed nearly 500 pounds. All the biscuits that were sent were carefully weighed. The largest was 713 pounds. It seemed certain that this would win the prize. But just before the competition closed, a lorry arrived at the factory with a truly large biscuit which weighed 2,400 pounds. It had been baked by a college student who had used over 1,000 pounds of flour, 800 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of fat, and 400 pounds of various other ingredients. The manufacturers had to pay more money than they had expected, for they bought the biscuit from the student for $24,000.
60. Why have advertisers made a close study of human weaknesses?
A. They thought it was very interesting to do so.
B. They wanted to persuade the customers to buy their products.
C. They thought it was their duty.
D. They wanted to research how much people spend buying their products.
61. Why do advertisers offer free samples and other things to people?
A. They use them to attract people’s attention.
B. Their advertisements have little effect on customers.
C. Different means are being used to cheat people.
D. They produce too many products that can’t be sold out.
62. From the last paragraph, we know that the factory failed to expect_____
A. how many people would take an interest in the competition.
B. how many ingredients are needed to bake a large biscuit.
C. it was possible to bake a biscuit as large as the student’s
D. the payment wouldn't be as high as $24,000.
D
With the development of the eco-tourism, eco-hotel are fast becoming the daring of the travel industry. These days, however, staying at an eco-hotel doesn't necessarily mean vacationing in a tree house in the Costa Rican jungle, although that is certainly a choice.
Most of eco-hotels fall into one of several sorts: hotels and resorts that protect ecologically important habitats; “green” hotel that reduce, recycle waste, and protect water; sustainable hotels that harvest food from gardens on the hotel property or get part or all of their power from renewable energy; hotels that encourage community involvement such as guests taking part in trail clearing; and hotels that offer some form of environmental education to their guests.
As such, eco-hotels are a various group. Nice urban hotels like Intercontinental The Willard Washington, D.C. focus on energy conservation, while The Rosario Resort & Spa on Orcas Island in Washington state offers a wildly popular “green” vacation package where guests can “take a hike, clear a trail, and enjoy a vacation” and in return receive a special “green” rate.
No matter what you call them, eco-hotel, eco- lodge, eco-resort, or green hotel, they are all part of the “greening”of the tourism industry, representing a conscience(良知) effort on the part of hotel.
Part of what drives this greening of the hotel industry is no doubt competition. Going green is yet another way to distinguish (区分)themselves from the mass of other excellent hotels that consumers have to choose from. But for many hotels it’s also part and parcel of their philosophy. With the concept(概念) of “going green” firmly rooted in consumers’ mind, eco-hotels take it to the next level, and whether or not money is the driving factor behind the greening of the hotel industry doesn't matter so much as that it’s good for the planet.
63. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means_________.
A. lovers like staying at an eco-hotel while traveling
B. eco-hotels are very popular in the travel industry
C. eco-hotels are where young people love to live
D. eco-hotels are where romantic love stories happen
64. An eco-hotel refers to the hotel ______.
A. where power comes from renewable energy
B. which is comfortable and fashionable
C. whose rooms are made up of glass
D. which is home to protected species
65. From the last paragraph, we can infer that______.
A. the philosophy of eco-hotel is to earn more money
B. eco-hotels have no advantages in competing for travellers
C. eco-hotels increase the travelers’ sense of environment
D. the hotel industry cares more money than environment
