题目列表(包括答案和解析)

John was a very strong man. Once he got a job of cutting wood in a forest. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he should work.
The first day, John cut down 18 trees. "Good," the boss said, "keep it up!" John was encouraged by the words of the boss and tried harder the next day, but he could only cut down 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only cut down 10 trees. Day after day he was cutting down fewer and fewer trees.
"I must be losing my strength," John thought. He went to the boss and said that he could not understand what was going on. "When was the last time you had sharpened your axe?" the boss asked. "Sharpened? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut more treesl" said John.
The moral of this story: While John was working hard, he didn't think about how to do his job better. Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don't take time to sharpen our skills. To get a good mark in examinations has been regarded as being most important for a student, and it is also what parents always expect their children to do.But is it enough? These days increasing attention has been paid in schools across the country to what is called quality education. It means that a student, besides doing well in exams, should develop his skills in other ways in order to turn himself into a qualified(合格的)graduate of the country.

“ Quality education”, said Xing Jizu, Party Secretary of the Education Bureau of downtown Hongkou District Shanghai, “ aims to help students to gain a high moral(道德的)standard(水平), a strong sense of patriotism(爱国主义), a strong wish for learning, as well as a sound mind and body.

“ We need reforms(改革)to achieve our goal for quality education, ” Mr.Xing Jizu said.He also outlined what they planned.

Xing said that the return of Hong Kong to the mainland(大陆)in July 1997, for example, was regarded as a very good chance for educational advance.A lot of related activities were organized at all the schools in Hong Kou.

Besides, all schools in the district were advised to set up after-class art or science groups.A students’ art festival is to be held in each school every year.

As for physical education, every student is required to have at least one hour of exercise a day.Every year, a sports meeting will take place at each school.

Besides, various kinds after-school activities will be organized to help develop the students’ practical and social abilities.

“ What we are doing is by no means weaken the importance of the regular classroom teaching or exam results.” Xing pointed out, “ Instead, we hope that through quality education, students can learn more, in less time, in an easy way.Only in this way can we bring up children fit for the bright future of China.”

Mr father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced (宣布):"Get up,
you're going with me to cut the grass in the garden."
The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and
excited. From sunup to sundown, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden. By the
end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his
business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.
One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside."Take away these leaves!" he said,
"and don't make me have to tell you to do it again." The message was clear. Today I value (珍视) the
importance of doing a job well the first time. It will never fail to impress (给……留下印象) the person you
are working for.
After two years, my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to cut the grass by
ourselves. Every Saturday during my last two years of high school, we set off early in the morning with the
same strong wish we had gained while working under our father.
Looking after the garden was neither exciting nor high paying, but that didn't matter. It taught me that any
job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay."If
you're only thinking about hard work and money, you probably don't want to do any better than you are doing." I answered. In every job, from cutting the grass to washing dishes, I've learned much. I've learned something
that helps me in my next job.
If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.
1. The writer felt proud and excited when he was asked to cut the grass because he thought _________.

A. fourteen
B. eighteen
C. twenty
D. twenty-two
