Two young men went past the house of the mayor(市长) and caught sight of(看到) a goose(鹅) hanging inside the kitchen window. They liked the goose very much, so they thought up a plan to get the goose at night with the help of a ladder(梯子).
It was dark. They propped up(架起) a ladder and one of them climbed up it. Just at that moment, a policeman got to the street corner and walked up to them, asking, “What are you doing here?”
The man holding the ladder pretended to be calm(故作镇静) and said, “Well, sir. Tomorrow will be the birthday of our mayor, you see. We wanted to make him happy, so we hung this goose in his kitchen.”
“It's really nice of you,” said the policeman. “But why don't you do it during the day? Such a present is far from bribing(贿赂), but what you are doing here at night is improper(不合适的).”
Obediently(顺从地), the young man cried upwards to his partner, “Bring the goose back down, Jack!”
