Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was failing. Surprisingly, he could read, yet,    21  his reading skills, Steve had been failing since first grade. Steve was a big boy, yet, he went unnoticed...    22   Miss White.
Miss White was a smiling, beautiful, young lady. For the first time in his    23  life, Steve couldn’t take his eyes off his teacher; yet,    24  he failed. One day, Miss White’s    27  voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve!” Startled (吓了一跳), he    28  to look at her. “Pay attention!” She began to    29  the test results. “You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “   30  one boy, and it breaks my    31  to tell you this, but...” She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp    32 . “... The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
After that, Steve still    33  do his homework. “Just try it,” Miss White said one day. “Steve! Please! I care about you!” Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, cared about him! Steve went home from school,    34 ,  that afternoon.
The following Monday he arrived at school on time, and waited for Miss White to enter the classroom. She walked in, all sparkle and smiles! Immediately, she gave a    35  on the weekend homework. Steve was the first to    36  his paper. With a look of    37 , Miss White took his paper. Steve walked back to his desk, his heart beating strongly within his chest.
Miss White’s face was in total    38 ! Suddenly, her face broke into a bright smile. The smartest boy in the seventh grade had just    39  his first test! From that moment   40  was the same for Steve.

Tom was a middle-aged leather trader whose repeated failure in career
made him a depressed man, often complaining that others had been playing tricks on him. One day he told his wife he was so   16  with the city that he had to leave.

He opened it and found the same girl outside. But this time she was holding two candles, saying, “My grandma told me the new neighbor downstairs might need candles. At that moment he suddenly realized what caused his   32 in life. It

He was about to give up and quit before this point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called   26   to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now   27  , was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light   28   his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

“Paid in full with a glass of milk.”

After the quake hit northeast Japan on March 11, many moving stories that I saw with my own eyes happened around me.

I had to walk home since all the  21  had stopped after the earthquake. On my way home I 22  an old lady at a bakery shop who was giving out free bread, which made my heart  23 . A man was holding a sign that said, “Please use our 24 .” He was 25  his house for people to go to the restroom.

My friend wanted to  26  others. He stood in the cold with a sign “If you’re okay with a motorcycle, I will  27  you to your house.” And then I saw him take one gentleman home, all the way to a faraway place! 

The next day I drove to  28  my car with gas. There is a lack (缺乏) of 29  now and many gasoline stations are either closed or have very  30  lines. I got  31 , since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my 32 , the man smiled and said, “ 33  this situation, we are only giving $30 worth gas per person. Is that all right?” “ 34 . I’m just glad that we are all able to  35 ,” I said. His smile gave me so much comfort.

I saw a man at the evacuation (疏散) center 36  when people brought food to him. It was the first time in three days that food was brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next 37  surprised me. “I am very 38  that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t  39  any food at all. Please go to that center as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this  40 .
