A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.
The conversation soon turned into complaints about  36  in work and life. Offering his  37  coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and  38  with a large pot of coffee and a  39  of cups---porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive, some beautiful—telling them to  40  themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, “if you have  41 , all the nice-looking expensive cups have been  42 , leaving behind the plain and  43  ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the  44  of your problems and stress.”
“Be assured that the cup  45  adds no quality to the coffee.  46  it is just more expensive and in some cases  47  hides what we drink.”
48  all of you really want is coffee, not the cup,  49  you consciously went for the best cups…. And then you began  50  each other’s cups.”
Now consider this:  51  is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. 52  are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the  53  of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we  54  to enjoy the coffee. Value the coffee, not the cups! Don’t let the cups  55 you … enjoy the coffee instead.

Kelly Reeves was getting ready for a trip when her phone slipped into a sink full of water. Panic moment! She quickly picked up the wet phone and tried to turn it on, but nothing worked. Her first reaction? She got dressed, drove to the nearest store, and bought a new model at full price.

A new study finds that fear of losing your phone is a common illness. About 66 percent of those surveyed suffer from nomophobia or “no mobile phone phobia”. Interestingly, more women worry about losing their phone than men.

    Fortunately, there’s a solution.

The first step is to figure out if you have nomophobia. Checking your phone too often is one thing, but the true sign of a problem is that you can’t conduct business or go about your routine when the fear becomes so severe.

Do you go to unusual lengths to make sure you have your phone? That’s another sign of a problem. If you find you check your phone plenty of times per hour, or a total of an hour per day, there may be a problem.

Some of the treatments are similar to those for treating anxiety attacks: Leaving the phone behind and not checking e-mail or text messages, and then learning to tolerate the after anxiety. Even if this leads to a high level of worry and stress, the solution is to push through the fear and learn to deal with not having your phone.

Of course, there are also technological alternatives. Luis Levy, a co-founder at Novy PR, says he uses an application called Cerberus that can automatically track the location of his phone. To find it, he can just go to a Web site and see the phone’s location.

He also insures his phone through a service called Asurion. The company’s description of its product reads like a prescription for anxiety: “60 million phones are lost, stolen or damaged each year. You’ll have complete peace of mind knowing that your phone is protected and you can quickly reconnect with family, friends and work, as soon as the very next day!”

1.Why does the author mention Kelly’s experience in the first paragraph?

A. To inform us that mobile phones are useful.

B. To introduce the topic for discussion.

C. To tell us we should get phones ready for a trip.

D.To warn us that we should be careful.

2.The underlined word “nomophobia” in Paragraph 2 means ________.

A. Fear of losing mobile phones.

B. Habits of using mobile phones

C. Independence of mobile phones.

D. Eagerness for new mobile phones.

3.Which of the following is a way to treat nomophobia?

A. Learning more about modern technology.

B. Avoiding using phone for some time

C. Not using a mobile phone in one’s daily work.

D. Protecting one’s phone against any damage.

4.Why can the service called Asurion help to treat nomophobia?

A. It will give you a new phone through insurance.

B. It lets you know other people also lose their phones.

C. It gives you a prescription to treat nomophobia.

D. It enables you to reconnect with your acquaintance.

5.What is the passage mainly about?

A. New mobile phone technology.

B. Attitude toward mobile phone.

C. Solutions to nomophobia

D. Disadvantages of mobile phone

We all remember seeing hitchhikers, standing by the side of the road, thumb, sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting rare nowadays. What killed hitchhiking? Safety is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime have put many drivers off picking up hitchhikers. That no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester no doubt reflects the safety fear: a large, strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.

But the reason may be more complex: hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are poor. Plenty of people still hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of car ownership in the UK means the few people lift hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they afford cars? Why can’t they take the coach or the train?

Three-quarters of the UK population have access to a car; many of the remainder will be quite old. The potential hitchhiking population is therefore small. Yet my trip proves it’s still possible to hitchhike. The people who picks me up were very interesting-lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man who live in an isolated farmhouse and a couple living up in the mountains. My conclusion is that only really interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn’t help stopping.

The future of hitchhiking most likely lies with car-sharing organized over the Internet, via sites such as hitchhikers. org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out (actually, I didn’t do much of that, preferring just to hold up my destination sign) and people—wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people—will stop.

In the UK, with its cheap coaches and reasonable rail service, I don’t think I’ll make a habit of it. But having enjoyed it so much, I’m ready now to do a big trip across Europe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of my wife’s hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go, though Afghanistan might be a challenge. I wish I’d got that tank commander’s mobile number.

1.The author tried to hitchhike but was rejected by single women drivers because        .

    A. they were not heading towards Manchester

    B. they thought most hitchhikers were dangerous

    C. hitchhiking had been banned and they didn’t want to break the law

    D. he was a strong man in strange clothes who seemed dangerous

2.Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage?

    A. Movies have discouraged people from hitchhiking

    B. Car ownership levels are lower in Romania than in the UK.

    C. 25% of UK people don’t have access to cars.

    D. Increased car ownership has reduced the need for hitchhiking.

3.The “fat blokes in red, spotted scarves” in Paragraph 3 most likely means     .

    A. murderous hitchhikers        B. friendly and talkative hitchhikers

    C. typical hitchhikers           D. strange hitchhikers like the author

4.According to the author, future hitchhikers are more likely to              .

    A. visit websites and find people to share cars with

    B. stand by roads with their thumbs sticking out

    C. stick out signs with their destinations written on

    D. wait for some kind people to pick them up

5.From the last paragraph, we know that the author          .

    A. frequently hitchhikes in Britain

    B. plans to hitchhike across Europe

    C. thinks public transport is safer for travel

    D. is going to contact the tank commander
