Do you have a friend who is upset about his or her parent’s drinking? You want to do something to help, but what? Your friend may not talk about this with you, but you can still be a good friend. One out of four children lives with at least one adult who has alcoholism, so your friend is not alone.

●Be a good listener.Your friend may need someone to talk to.Listen to your friend and suggest that she or he talk to a trusted adult in addition to talking to you.You can offer a good listening ear, but sometimes an adult is needed for more serious things.Maybe you can suggest a caring adult for your friend to talk to, such as a teacher, a neighbor, or a grandparent. He will listen and support your friend, and he will not hurt your friend or put your friend down.

●Don’t spread gossip(闲话)about your friend’s family. It’s okay to tell your parents or another trusted adult what is going on, but respect your friend’s right by not telling other kids in your class.

●Ask your parents if your friend ________ your house, and then invite your friend over for enjoyable activities or to do homework together.Sometimes your friend might just need to get away and have fun being a kid.

●Don’t ride in a car when a friend’s parent has been drinking if you can avoid it.It is not safe.Call your parents, walk, or try to get a ride with an adult you know who has not been drinking. If you must get in the car with a drinking driver, sit in the middle of the back seat with your seat belt fastened.Lock your doors and try to stay calm.

For some parents, the Internet seems like a jungle, filled with dangers for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as dangers. With good guides and some education, the madness for the Internet can be safely conducted.“Kids have to be online. If we tell our kids they can’t have access to the Internet, we are cutting them off from their future.”

Safety in the highway is not totally out of our hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts—or being thrown from the car—can really do damage to you. That’s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt’s main purpose is __________ if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object—or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes—the type of crash that kills the most drivers—when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that mixing drinking and driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties(处罚) for drinking and driving.

1. What is the main idea of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words. )

2. Which of the sentences in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

Air bags can not do much protection in side or rear crashes; although they are effective, you can’t replace them with safety belts.

3. Please fill in the blank with proper words to make the sentence completed. (Please answer within 6 words. )

4. Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

5. Which of the suggestions do you think is the best for you? And why? (Please answer within 30 words. )

While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

  ◆Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity.Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

  ◆Make time for yourself

Schedule time for both work and entertainment.Don’t forget, play can be just as important to your overall well-being as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.Go window-shopping or work on a hobby.Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

◆ Make a list of things to do

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that “there’s so much to do, and not enough time”.Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything.Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then ________, checking off each task as it is completed.Set out to do the most important tasks first.
