In 1952, on the island of Koshima(越谷,日本某地), scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkey liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant. An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers too. This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable(美味的).Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement.Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes.Let’s further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes. Then it happened.By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough!

But notice:A most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then jumped over the sea colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama(高岐山)began washing their sweet potatoes. Thus, when a certain critical(关键的)number achieves an awareness, this new awareness may be communicated from mind to mind.Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon(现象)means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the conscious property(个人意识性属性)of those people.

But there is a point at which if only one more person comes to a new awareness, a field(能量场)is strengthened so that this awareness is picked up by almost everyone!

Your awareness is needed. You may be the “hundredth monkey”

The Romans built great “aqueducts” to carry fresh water from the mountains to the cities. Many of these aqueducts are still standing today. The Romans also built great pipes under the ground to carry away the sewage (污水). In Rome, one of these sewage pipes is still used today; it is 2,000 years old. The Roman Emperors even set up a government health service. They built the first great public hospitals in Europe, and they paid doctors to look after poor people.

When the Roman Empire fell to pieces, these civilized (文明的) methods of treatment disappeared from most of Europe, for more than a thousand years. People went back to the old ways. They lived in dirty conditions which helped to cause diseases; and they asked God to cure the diseases. They shut up mentally sick people in prisons. Or they burnt them alive because they were supposed to have magic (魔法的) powers.

But the work of Greek and Roman doctors was not lost. Over a thousand years ago, the Arabs moved into many of the Mediterranean countries. They took big parts of the Roman lands. They translated the Greek and Roman medical books into Arabic. Arab doctors themselves made many new discoveries.

When civilization at last came back to Europe, men once again translated the Greek and Roman works on medicine into Latin. Slowly, very slowly, European doctors discovered again the things that the Greeks and Romans had known, so long ago. Slowly, they began to make new discoveries. They found out more about the way the body works, the way our blood goes round our bodies, the way our nerves (神经) send messages from our brains to our muscles, the way these muscles move our bodies.

LEMOORE, Calif.(AP)-Fed up with students' racy moves, a principal at a California high school has taken the unusual step of cancelling the rest of this year's school dances.

Principal Jim Bennett of Lemoore Union High School said he warned students at a winter formal dance last month to either quit dirty dancing or face the possibility of not dancing at all.

But he said the students continued "freak(=crazy)dancing", a form of sexually suggestive dancing.

The ban on dances includes the school's Sadie Hawkins dance in February and the junior and senior proms(舞会)in the spring, but Bennett said they could be rescheduled if students modify their behavior.

One idea is to let students sign a form stating that raunchy(猥亵的)dancing will get them kicked out.Students hope similar regulations could lead to the reinstatement of other dances, particularly the prom.

"Some students save up all year to buy a dress or rent a tuxedo(晚礼服)and buy flowers for the prom,"said student body president Zohra Lakhani, a 17-year-old senior, "To crush everyone's dreams, it's not fair."

Kids!Come have a ball!Or 60,000 of them! There’s a new type of business franchise that is appearing in shopping malls and neighborhoods across America offering pay-per-use indoor playgrounds ,which feature toys ,games ,supervised fun and a workout that doesn’t break the family bank.

As public playgrounds grow increasingly worn and dirty, the for-profit centers offer clean, safe supervised activity as well as a variety of challenging exercises to develop youngsters’ physical fitness, usually for a fee of around 5$ an hour.“Playgrounds are dirty ,not supervised,” says Dick Guggenheimer ,owner of the two-month-old Discovery Zone in Yonkers, N.Y., part of Kansas City-based chain, “We are indoors; we are padded(铺上软垫);parents can feel their child is safe”.
