A child's birthday party should be one of the most fun events of the year, for the birthday child, the guests
and even for the hosts. The three keys to a successful child's birthday party is planning, more planning, and
even more planning. Kid's birthday party games are important ingredients of every party and must be thought
out and arranged in advance. Luckily, there is no shortage of fun and interesting games to keep kids busy and
happy, so it is not difficult to come up with more than enough ideas.
It is important to remember that children have a far shorter attention span (长度) than adults. For that
reason, the host should not expect that one or two activities will keep the guests entertained for a long period
of time. Plan a lot of short, fun games that will satisfy their needs. Make sure that the games are age
appropriate:"duck duck goose" will keep little ones happy for a while, but certainly will not work for pre-teens.
"Scavenger or treasure hunts" are great kid's birthday party games for any age-just make sure that it's neither
too difficult nor too simple.
Be sure to have enough ideas in mind so that it is possible to "throw away" an activity that is not going well.
Kid's birthday party games should be simple and fun. If a game is started and no one seems to be having any
fun, simply end that activity and start another. Kids like changes and will not mind a bit. If the party is held
indoors, it is a good idea to clear a room of breakables and make that room the game headquarters. For outdoor
parties, make sure that the play area is free from potential dangers and that the games do not involve tree
climbing or other activities that are likely to cause injury.
Finally, remember to have prizes and treats on hand to reward the players. Prizes do not need to be large or
expensive. Kid's birthday party games are about teamwork, not rewards. Be sure to have prizes not only for
the winners of the games, but for every child in attendance, so that each child goes home with some fun
memento of the party and the time spent with friends.

A fox in the deep forest of long ago had lost its front legs.No one knew what caused so.A man, who lived on the edge of the forest, seeing the fox from time to time, wondered how in the world it managed to get its food. One day when the fox was not far from him he had to hide himself quickly because a tiger was approaching. The tiger had fresh game in its claws.Lying down on the ground, it ate its fill, leaving the rest for the fox.

Again the next day the tiger did the same and the fox appeared again.Seeing this, the man began to think, "If this fox is taken care of in this mysterious way, its food sent by some unseen higher power, why don't I just rest in a corner and have my daily meal provided for me?"

Because he had a lot of faith, he let the days pass, waiting for food.Nothing happened. He just went on losing weight and strength until he was nearly a skeleton.Close to losing consciousness, he heard a voice which said, "Oh you, who have mistaken the way, see now the truth! You should have followed the example of that tiger instead of imitating the disabled fox."

So from the above story, we may have some questions to think about:

Astronauts’ meals have come a long way from the free-dried powders and semi-liquid pastes of decades ago,now US scientists want to grow vegetables in mini-greenhouses on the moon.

Scientists say they are looking forward to a time when residents of future lunar or even Martian outsteps will be able to dine on fresh vegetables.Paragon Space Development Corporation has unveiled what it called the first step toward growing flowers——and eventually food—on the moon.

This is a sealed greenhouse that looks like a bell jar encased in a 46-cm triangular aluminium frame(三角铝框架).It is designed to safely land a laboratory plant on the lunar surface, and protect it while it grows.

The miniature greenhouse is to be launched into space by Odyssey Moon Ltd, a participant in the Google Lunar X Prize. This competition offers $20 million to any entrant(参加者) who can launch, land and operate a rover(漫游)on the lunar surface.

Paragon officials say future testing of the“Lunar Oasis”will be driven by Odyssey’s flight schedule, which will not happen until 2012 at the earliest.

When it does lift off the greehouse will contain the seeds of Brassica, a hardy plant related to Brussels sprouts and cabbage.Because Brassica goes from seed to flower in just 14 days,it can complete its life cycle in a single lunar night

“Colonizing the Moon or Mars seems so far away, but it is important that we do this research now,” Paragon president Jane Poynter said.

“It takes a long time to get a lot of research, and to get integrated, reliable efficient systems before colonists move in.”she said.

I began reading words when I was eight months old.By the time I was two, I had read Charlotte’s Web.My parents thought it was odd, but because I didn’t have any siblings for them to compare me with, they didn’t realise just how odd.

At pre-school in Northport, New York, I quickly overtook everyone. At seven, I was going into high school for my classes but still doing all my social activities with kids my age.But when I was nine, the public school administration said that I had to go to high school full-time with 16-year-olds.I didn’t want to, because some kids there were always teasing me -it was pretty horrible when they called me a know-it-all and tried to grab my homework.

My parents tried to find me another school but, in the end, because I was so advanced, the only place that was on the same level as me was State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The admissions people said that if I thought I could manage I could have a place, as long as my mother accompanied me to classes.

So, aged 10, I started an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics.I was frightened on my first day, but I was also excited that I was going to attend my first real physics class. Most of the teachers were nice but one or two didn’t like me.One professor said that just because I did as well as the other, male, students, it didn’t mean I was as good as them. But the students were supportive and my parents always made sure that I had a group of friends of my own age; they didn’t want me to be a social misfit.

I graduated summa cum laude(with the highest honor)when I was 14 -the youngest student ever to do so in the US.

I was a perfectionist; I don’t think I would have settled for less than that.I went on to Drexel University and, at 17, I was awarded a Master’s and continued to study for a Ph.D.

But that was when I grew disillusioned with the science world.I saw bad conduct and realised that some professors weren’t motivated by a love of science.I fell out with the adviser who was supervising my Ph.D.I charged Drexel University in a civil lawsuit and the case has now gone into private, binding arbitration(仲裁).

I believe my adviser applied for grants and patents using my ideas, and took credit for them.He denies this and has accused me of stealing his work.Even though the university has cleared me of plagiarism(剽窃)it has still refused to award me my Ph.D.

At the time I was fully expecting to receive my PhD, I applied for a post teaching advanced technology fusion at Konkuk university in Seoul. When I was appointed, I was just under 19, so I made it into Guinness World Records.

In South Korea, I was treated as a minor celebrity.People stared at me wherever I went on campus, and I was asked to give inspirational talks to teenagers. But I didn’t renew my contract:I’d had a great year, but I wanted to come home.

I still don’t have my PhD and I am angry and disappointed about that.I worked so hard all my life and my research ended up going nowhere.

There’s always hope, but the experience at Drexel has derailed me.If a university gave me a place to complete my studies, I would take it.But I am someone who is suing her former university, so a lot of colleges are afraid to touch me.

For now, I’m enrolled in law school and training to be a lawyer.I want to combine legal and science knowledge so that I can protect people’s research rights.

It’s strange being back at school:I’m 21 years old and for the first time in my life, I’m the same age as the other students.

Who’s in control of your life? Who is pulling your string? For the majority of us, it’s other people – society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us.As Oscar Wilde puts it,“Most people are other people.Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿),their passions a quotation.”

So when people tell us how wonderful we are,it makes us feel good.We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore,we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to.Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting theirfix(一剂毒品),we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.

But just as with any drug, there is a price to pay.The price of the approval drug is freedom--the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think.People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and,in the end, they’re more interested in themselves than in you.Furthermore,if we try to live by the opinions of others,we will build our life on sinking sand.Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.

So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way--make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others,we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.

1.What Oscar Wilde says implies that         ___________.

A.we have thoughts similar to those of others

B.most people have a variety of thoughts

C.other people’s thoughts are more important

D.most people’s thoughts are controlled by others

2.What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph?

A.Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.

B.We may lose ourselves to please others.

C.We need to pay for what we want to get.

D.The price of taking the drug is freedom.

3.It can be concluded from the passage that _________________.

       A. it’s better to do what we like         B.we shouldn’t care what others think

C.we shouldn’t change our own opinions   D.it's important to accept others’ opinions

4.The author tries to persuade the readers to accept his arguments mainly by ___________.

A.analyzing causes and effects           B.providing examples and facts

       C.discussing questions                D.making suggestions
