A. Possible problems due to global warming B. Warmer summer in Dallas C. Help from Methane D. One important step E. Getting warmer and warmer in some places F. Problems bigger than benefits |
76.__________
Here is what global warming could do in a few years: in Dallas, a doubled level of carbon dioxide would increase the number of days a year with temperatures above 100 degrees from nineteen to seven-eight. On sixty-eight days, as opposed to the current four, the temperature wouldn’t fall below 80 degrees at night. One hundred and sixty-two days a year, the temperature would top 90 degrees.
77. __________
Although most scientists agree that increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will inevitably lead to global warming, no one is certain how fast and how much temperatures will rise and what the effects will be in any geographical areas. This gives policymakers an excuse for delaying action. Some experts predict that within two centuries glaciers(冰川) in the North and South Poles will melt, ocean levels will rise, and much of what is now the coast of the United States will be under water. They also predict great droughts and hurricanes, as a result of climate changes.
78. __________
Other scientists think the changes will be much more gradual, even beneficial. After all, Canada would not complain if the productive corn-growing lands were shifted north. While many nations could end up with milder climates, the change-perhaps 100 times faster than at any time in human history—could be so drastic(猛烈的) that many of the benefits would be lost. There could be crowds of environmental refugees, as well, making the tragedy of the Dust Bowl era seem mild in comparison.
79. __________
What can we do? Humanity’s contribution to the greenhouse effect comes from so many basic activities that we can’t hope to eliminate it completely. Some steps have already been taken. Since the 1970’s, the use of CFCs as aerosol-can propellants(喷雾器) has seen banned in the United States.
80. __________
Another strategy is to burn as much as methane(甲烷) as possible. This aids CO2 to the air, but since methane traps twenty times as much heat as CO2, the net result is worth-while. The gas in many garbage landfills is already being used in a number of places around the United States. It is being used to heat thousands of homes.

People often say,“Children can’t do maths problems. It’s because parents can’t do their children’s homework.”Here’s an example to show what I mean.
The other day my daughter brought home her maths homework,“I have to subtract(减) 179 from 202,”she said.
“It’s quite easy,”I said.“You put the 202 over the 179.”
“But we need a 10 here. Where is the 10?”
“I don’t know where the 10 is. Let’s just subtract 179 from 202. Nine from two is three. You carry one and add it to seven. Eight from zero is two. The answer is 23.”
“We can’t do it that way. We have to use the 10.”
“Well, I’m going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.”
Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter. The teacher said,“In the right-hand column we have units of one. The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the centre counts for zero tens. The two in the left-hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?”But I didn’t think it was clear.
I hung up and found my way to the medicine box. My head was now hurting. I started putting pills of medicine into my mouth.“How many did you take?”my wife asked.“I took one and then I took another… I knew one and one was two, but don’t ask me what it is now.”

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly 36 the great day of gift-giving in advance.
Each day the children produced some new 37 — strings of popcorn, handmade trinkets, and German bell. Through it all she remained alone, 38 from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what 39 happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would 40 her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子)and competed with one anther to bring the 41 ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were 42 . All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she 43 . I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had 44 around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly 45 of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled, 46 it had been held many times by 47 , childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but 48 her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble 49 from a golden chain. I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would 53 it.” Neither of us could stop the 54 . She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest 55 of all: her trust and love.
