Russian President Vladimir Putin has explained why he stopped to kiss a small boy on the stomach as he was walking through the Kremlin, saying it was a spontaneous (本能的) action like touching a cat.
"It was an unplanned meeting - people just came up and started talking to me," Putin said, recalling the June 28 incident when he met the boy, Nikita, among a group of tourists, lifted the boy’s shirt and planted a kiss on his stomach.

The cowboy has become the hero of many movies. He is, even today, believed to have courage and adventure(冒险). But what was the life of a cowboy really like?
The cowboy’s job is clear from the word “cowboy”. A cowboy, according to dictionary explanation, is a man who rides a horse and whose job is to care for cattle(牛). The cattle were in the West and in Texas. People in the cities of the East wanted beef(牛肉) from these cattle. Trains could take the cattle east. But first the cattle had to get to the trains. Part of the cowboy’s job was to take the cattle hundreds of miles to the railroad towns.
These trips were called cattle drives. A cattle drive usually took several months. Cowboys rode for sixteen hours a day. Because they rode so much, each cowboy brought along about eight horses. A cowboy changed horses several times each day.
The cowboys had to make sure that the cattle arrived safely. Before starting on a drive, the cowboys branded(给---烙上印) the cattle. They burned a mark on the cattle to show who they belonged to. But these marks didn’t stop rustlers(盗窃牲口的人), or cattle thieves. Cowboys had to protect the cattle from rustlers. Rustlers made the already dangerous trip even more dangerous.
Even though their work was very difficult and dangerous, cowboys did not earn much money. They were paid badly. But cowboys liked their way of life. They lived in a wild and open country. They lived a life of adventure and freedom.

C. to take care of cattle D. to brand the cattle

Even people who don't understand English can enjoy Chaplin's films because they are mostly silent. It
isn't what he says that makes us laugh. It depends upon actions which mean the same thing to people all
over the world. He is master of the art - a kind of world language.
As a young man, he and his brother traveled to America in a small company of actors. Chaplin was
then invited to join a new company that was making film comedies. Very soon he had made dozens of
short films for this company. And it was in his second film that he wore the clothes which made his
reputation - black hat, tight coat, baggy trousers, huge shoes, moustache and walking stick. He intended
simply to make people laugh. But the odd make-up made him look both comic and sad.
By the time he was thirty, Chaplin was the greatest, best known and best loved comedian in the world. He received thousands of dollars for each film he made. He had formed his own manner of acting. He was welcomed by excited crowds wherever he went. But he worked very hard and had few close friends.
Perhaps that is why the sad side of the little tramp began to show more clearly in the films he made. The
little man began to want more than food and a roof over his head. He began to want love.
In one of his most famous films "The Gold Rush" a girl plays tricks on the little man. Then she begins
to feel sorry for him and treats him kindly. He mistakes her pity for love. The girl in "City Lights" is blind. She thinks he is the most wonderful man she has ever met. But then she recovers her sight and sees what
a foolish figure he is. This sadness gives Chaplin's films a depth of human experience which few comedians can equal.
After living in America for forty years he moved to Switzerland. There he died on Christmas Day
1977. He once described himself as a citizen of famous pictures that were made during the 1920s and
1930s, the time of the silent films. But, to many people all over the world Chaplin will always be the king
of comedy.
A. was famous
B. didn't want to have friends
C. was not good at making friends
D. spent most of his time in working and had no time to make friends

Dear Stiff,
Several weeks ago I asked you about the best way to travel to Edinburgh overnight and you advised me to go by coach(长途大巴). “It’s cheap and convenient,” you said. “And very comfortable.” Well, I took your advice. Now let me tell you what happened!
We left on time (and with plenty of loud music!) and stopped for supper at a café at about 9:30 p. m. It wasn’t the sort of place I like eating in and it was also very crowded, so I decided to buy some chocolate. I had some fruit with me too, so at least I didn’t go hungry.
We set off again at 10:15. The lights went off (and the awful music too, thank goodness) and I settled down to get some sleep. However, the people just behind me kept on talking and every now and then they burst out laughing at some joke. I asked them to be quiet, but they didn’t take any notice at all. However, eventually I fell asleep – but then the people behind me woke me up ! “You’re snoring (打鼾),” they said, “and keeping us awake!” After than I hardly slept at all.
The rest of the journey was like a long bad dream. Then, at about 5:30, about 40 miles south of Edinburgh, the coach broke down. The driver went off to telephone for help, but when a rescue van(面包车)finally arrived, they couldn’t get the coach to start. In the end, they had to send for another one and we all had to change coaches – in the rain! By that time I was very hungry and I was onging for a nice hot drink. I got one – when we finaly reached Edinburgh at nine o’clock! By then I was so tired I went straight to bed and stayed there for the rest of the day – the first day of my holiday!
As you can imagine, I don’t want to travel by coach again overnight. Of course I’m not blaming you for all this – but thanks for the advice!
