“By the time 2020, there’s going to be about 1.7 billion people living in slums(贫民窟) so we would like to  22  change,” says Stephanie Hunt, co-founder of the Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanities at SMU. The institute, which  23  build the village on SMU’s campus, was established to solve problem of the poor in the United States and around the world through engineering, and the free  24 .

Both warm-blooded and cold-blooded desert animals have ways to escape the desert heat. Warm-blooded desert animals, such as rats and mice, rest during the day, often staying in cool underground burrows. At night they search for food. Animals that are out during the day, such as cold-blooded lizards and snakes, are active only for short periods. As their body temperature rises, these reptiles move into the shade in order to cool down. In the early evening, when the sun grows weaker, the reptiles become more active and begin their search for food again.

Getting enough water to survive is a major problem for all desert animals. Some desert animals, like desert birds, manage to find water holes. Other desert animals, such as the kangaroo rat and the related jerboa, get water only from the food that they eat. Because these animals eat mainly dry seeds, they must survive on a tiny amount of water.

Most deserts have only a small number of frogs and toads because these animals must be near water to survive. Yet even these creatures have adapted(适应)to desert conditions. When small amounts of water collect in temporary streams, the desert-living frogs and toads become active. After a rainfall, they lay their eggs. The eggs grow into tadpoles in a few days and into adults in just four weeks. When the puddles(水坑)dry up, the adult frogs or toads dig into the ground. Their metabolism(新陈代谢)slows, and they stay beneath the ground until the next rain, which may be as good as a year away. Until then, their bodily activities continue at a reduced rate.

The camel-often called the ship of the desert--is one of the most successful desert animals. Camels can go for long periods without water, but eventually they must drink. When water becomes available to them after a long drought, they may drink 95 liters of water or more. When water is not available, what helps camels survive the desert heat is the fat stored in their humps(驼峰). A camel’s hump contains about 12 kilograms of fat. Fat is rich in hydrogen. As the fat is digested, hydrogen from the fat combines with oxygen in the air that the camel breathes. The result is , or water. Each kilogram of fat that a camel digests produces about a liter of water.

When the weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cold. Why? The sun makes the earth hot but it can not make the water very hot. Although the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth goes up. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When it moves in, you feel the wind. And the wind makes you cool.

Of course, scientists can not answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why is the ocean full of salt?” Scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks (断裂). Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean?” The ocean does not get more salty every year. Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.

We know a lot about our world. But there are still many answers that we don’t have and we are curious about.

1. The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A. people feel cool when they are near a lake or an ocean

B. scientists can explain many things, but not everything

C. scientists can explain everything about the ocean

D. the salt in the ocean comes from rocks

2. Now scientists know ______.

A. what makes people feel cool near a lake or an ocean in summer

B. everything about the ocean

C. what happens to the salt in the ocean

D. why the ocean does not get more and more salty

3. A rock cracks when ______.

A. rain falls            B. it snows

C. it gets very cold            D. it gets warm

4. People are always curious because ______.

A. they know nothing about the world

B. they know only a little knowledge about the world

C. there are many answers they don’t agree

D. there are many things they don’t know

5. Which of the following reasons is NOT mentioned in this passage?

A. Why do people feel cool when they are near a lake or an ocean in hot weather?

B. Why doesn’t the ocean get more salty every year?

C. Why is the ocean water salty?

D. Why do rocks crack?

‘How lucky you are to be a doctor …’ Anyone who’s a doctor is right out of luck, I thought. Anyone who’s studying medicine should have his head examined.

You may think I want to change my job. Well, at the moment I do. As one of my friends says-even doctors have a few friends-it’s all experience. Experience! I don’t need such experience. I need a warm, comfortable, undisturbed bed of my own. I need it badly. I need all telephones to be thrown down the nearest well, that’s what I need.

All these thoughts fly round my head as I drive my Mini(微型汽车) through the foggy streets of East London at 3:45 a.m. on a December morning. I am a ministering angel in a Mini with a heavy coat and a bag of medicines. As I speed down Lea Bridge in the dark at this horrible morning hour, the heater first blowing hot then cold, my back aching from the car-seat, I do not feel like a ministering angel. I wish I were on the beach in southern France. Call me a bad doctor if you like. Call me what you will. But don’t call me at half past three on a December morning for an ear-ache that you have had for two weeks.

Of course, being a doctor isn’t really all bad. We do have our moments. Once in a while people are ill, once in a while you can help, once in a while you get given a cup of tea and rock-hard cake at two o’clock in the morning-then you worry if you have done everything. But all too often ‘everything’ is a repetitious rule: look, listen, feel, tap, pills, injection, phone, ambulance, away to the next.

And then there is always the cool, warm voice of the girl on the switchboard of the emergency bed service who will get your patient into hospital for you-the pleasant voice that comes to you as you stand in the cold, dark, smelly, dirty telephone box somewhere in a dangerous section of town. Oh, it has its moments, this life does.

1.According to the sentence “Anyone who’s studying medicine should have his head examined,” we know that ___________.

A.The writer wishes he could have a quiet, undisturbed night in bed at home.

B.One of his friends says that being a doctor helps one gain all sorts of experience.

C.He hates the telephone as a modern means of communication.

D.He is not happy with the small and uncomfortable car he is driving.

3.The statement “We do have our moments” could best be replaced by “___________”.

A.we doctors are called at a moment’s notice to see people who need medical treatment

B.usually we are glad that we can do something to help the sick

C.sometimes we find people are thankful for our help

D.there are chances that doctors find their work rewarding and satisfying

4.From the whole passage we know that the writer _____________.

A.is a bad doctor, unwilling to make a house call during the night-time

B.is so dissatisfied with his job that he wishes to find a new one

C.is satisfied with his job but he hates to be called out unnecessarily

D.thinks a doctor can enjoy certain special rights whether he felt lucky or not
