  The Cave Crawler mining robot

Why do human beings still risk their lives under ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the world? It’ s an increasingly urgent question, given the recent high-profile(引人注目的)mining accidents in Sago, W.Va., and Huntington, Utah.A small group of engineers and robotics experts envision(展望)a day in the not-too-distant future when robots and other technology do most of the dangerous mining work.

One of the first mining robots was developed five years ago at Carnegie-Mellon University's Robotics Institute. It was called Groundhog and it looked like a golf cart.It used lasers to “see” in dark tunnels and map abandoned mines-some of the most dangerous work in the business.

The latest prototype is called Cave Crawler. It's a bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos and video and has sensors mounted that can detect the presence of dangerous gases.Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacle it gets momentarily confused, it has to think through the process and where to go next, and sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person.

The biggest obstacle, though, is cost. The original research project was federally funded, but that money has dried up, and it's not clear where future funding will come from.Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past.Since 1990, fatalities have declined by 67 percent, and injuries by 51 percent, according to the National Mining Association.

Some experts predict that robots in mines will serve much of the same function that they do in the automotive industry. The robots do the most repetitive and dangerous jobs, but don't eliminate the need for human workers.

William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered "little of childhood but its pain". In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats's Death in 1939, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:

Earth, receive an honoured guest:

William Yeats is laid to rest.

Let the Irish vessel () lie

        Emptied of its poetry.

1.Which of the following can describe Yeats's family?

A.It filled Yeats's childhood with laughter.

B.It was shocked by Yeats's choice.

C.It was a typically wealthy family.

D.It had an artistic atmosphere.

2.According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats's life?

A.Yeats founded the first Irish theater.

B.Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.

C.Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.

D.Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Noble Prize.

3.What kind of feeling is expressed in W. H. Auden's lines?

A.Envy             B.Sympathy          C.Emptiness         D.Admiration

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Yeats's literary achievements              B.Yeats's historical influence

C.Yeats's artistic ambition                   D.Yeats's national honor

                                  C
Among the more colorful characters of Leadville’s golden age were H.A.W. Tabor and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as "Baby Doe". Their history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was attracted by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen. "A large amount of lead is sure to be found here." he said.
As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville’s fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco. It was his custom to "grubstake" prospective(预期的) miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or"grub", while they looked for ore(矿石), in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered. He did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value.
Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and asked for "grub". Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were persistent(坚持的), however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. "Oh help yourself. One more time won’t make any difference," He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They picked a barren place on the mountainside and began to dig. After nine days they struck a rich vein of silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known as the "Pittsburgh Mine," made $1,300, 000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment.
Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren hillside just outside the town for $117,000.This turned out to be even more abundant than the Pittsburgh, producing $35 000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later became the governor of the state.
49. The word "grubstake" in paragraph 2 means __________ .
 A. to supply miners with food and supplies
 B. to open a general store
 C. to do one’s contribution to the development of the mine
 D. to supply miners with food and supplies and in return get a share in the mine, if one was discovered
50.Tabor made his first fortune_________.
 A. by supplying two prospective miners and getting in return a one-third interest in the findings
 B. because he was persuaded by the two miners to quit supplying
 C. by buying the shares of the other
 D. as a land speculator(投机商)
51. The underlying(潜在的)reason for Tabor’s successful life career is __________.
   A. purely accidental
B. based on the analysis of miner’s being very poor and their possibility of discovering
profitable mining site
C. through the help from his second wife
  D. he planned well and accomplished targets step by step
52. If this passage is the first part of an article, who might be introduced in the following  part?
A. Tabor’s life.                               B. Tabor’s second wife, Elizabeth McCourt.
  C. Other colorful characters.           D. Tabor’s other careers.
