Several years ago, my family gathered on Cape Cod for a weekend. My parents were there, my sister and
her daughter too, two cousins and, of course, my wife, my son and me. We ate at one of those restaurants
where the menu is written on a blackboard held by a friendly waiter and had a wonderful time. With dinner
concluded, the waiter set the check down in the middle of the table. That's when it happened. My father did
not reach for the check.
In fact, my father did nothing. Conversation continued. Finally it dawned on me. Me! I was supposed to
pick up the check. After all these years, after hundreds of restaurant meals with my parents, after a lifetime
of thinking of my father as the one with the dollars, it had all changed. I reached for the check and pulled out
my American Express card. My view of myself was suddenly changed. With a stroke of the pen, I was
suddenly an adult.
Some people mark off their life in years, others in events. I am one of the latter, and I think of some events
as rites of passage. I did not become a young man at a particular year like 13, but when a kid strolled into the
store where I worked and called me "mister", I turned around to see whom he was calling. He repeated it
several times-"mister, mister"-looking straight at me. The realization hit like a punch: Me! He was talking to me.
I was suddenly a mister.
1. My father did not reach for the check because ____.
A. it was in the middle of the table
B. I was no longer a child
C. he had no money with him
D. he did not notice the check
2. The underlined part "it dawned on me" in the second paragraph means ____.
A. I understood
B. it was my turn
C. it surprised me
D. I felt sorry
3. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. None of my family was willing to pay the check.
B. I was not willing to pay the check.
C. We were happy on Cape Cod.
D. We didn't enjoy our meal.
4. From the passage, we can infer that ____ paid for restaurant meals before.
A. I
B. my mother
C. my parents
D. my father

Marianne, a schoolgirl, was learning to play the piano, and day after day her father stood behind as she practised. How patient and loving her father was, and how cleverly he showed Marianne how to play some particularly (特别地) difficult pieces! She was making progress (进步), very good progress, and that was very good. And there, almost lost in the big chair, sat Wolfgang, her four-year-old brother, who never had to be told to keep quiet when Merianne was practising. One evening at sundown the father patted(拍) Marianne's shoulder, saying she had done very well. All the moment Wolfgang climbed on his father's knee and begged to be allowed to play the pretty piece.

What a joke that was. Picking up his baby son, the father laughed, tapped his tiny nose and said, “Look at your small hands. why, you can't span(够得着)the note yet. You must wait, little man. You must wait.”

There was no end of fun during tea, and Marianne had to tell her mother about Wolfgang wanting to play one of the classics. After dinner Marianne helped wash the dishes when the father lit his pipe(烟斗).

But the pipe went out. He was on his feet. “Listen,” he said in a awed tone(感叹语气).“Listen, Marianne is playing that piece better than ever.”

But Marianne was washing pots in the kitchen.

His wife following, he went upstairs, the lamp in one hand, his pipe in the other. he pushed open the door, and found little Wolfgang playing in the darkness. “I love it so,” said the child.

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Abuse can be defined as “to treat wrongfully or harmfully”.There are different categories of abuse that have been recognized and within our case study there appear to be two distinct forms of abuse, family abuse and child abuse. These can be subdivided into terms of physical abuse and psychological abuse.Physical abuse is the intentional physical injury or harm or deliberately not preventing harm occurring. The minimum physical signs seen in our study of James are bruises but they might feel more painful to his heart than the more serious invisible injuries.Emotional abuse is the continual failure to meet basic emotional needs.Emotional development is prevented and well-being harmed. The emotional signs in our case study can be seen in James by his actions of being withdrawn and non-communicative.The behavioural sign to abuse taking place to James is his aggressive behaviour.

The short term effect of physical abuse on James is physical pain.In the long term, injuries that often happen can result in secondary illness and complications, permanent scars or even disabilities. His emotional effects in the short term are a fear of people, withdrawal, and poor relationship with others. The long term emotional effects could be low self-respect, depression, inability to form relationships.

Abuse can arise for many reasons and there are a number of theoretical views which may be useful in clarifying why the abuse has taken place. The female view believes that sex and family roles give approval to a culture of abuse.Considering the historical and fixed ideas, men have power and control. In James' case he lives in a re-constructed family with the father being rude and a heavy drinker. From a psychological angle, alcohol misuse can bring mental health problems which may increase aggression in the person and so James is more at risk from abuse by his stepfather. The relationship between the mother and James involves a dependency of James on his mother. With other problems in James' mother's life, this leads to increasing stress and the inability of his mother to cope with and manage a family with four children borne by two mothers. The attachment theory states that significant separations of a child from the carer in the early years can have an effect on their emotional development and can lead to psychological and social difficulties in later life. The loss of both his father and his half sister's father with whom he lives may have contributed to his behaviour.

Abusive behaviour can sometimes be the result of mental health problems, brain damage or being abused themselves.By becoming the abuser they believe they are taking control; some even believe that they are not doing anything wrong and cannot stop themselves. When working with individuals who have abused, it is important to be aware that they may go on to abuse again and there is a need to protect the community from the abuser.
